Has ‘The Cleveland Show’ Been Canceled?

cleveland 570x320 Has The Cleveland Show Been Canceled?

Seth MacFarlane may have his critics, but if there’s one thing everyone can agree on, it’s that the man behind Family Guy and box office smash Ted certainly knows how to keep busy.

In the past two years, MacFarlane has directed his first feature, released an album of jazz standards and hosted the Academy Awards (to some controversy, of course), all while providing his voice talent and creative direction to three animated Fox comedies. Now, however, it seems that one of those shows may be on its way out.

According to The Wrap, The Cleveland Show will likely be canceled, as Fox has yet to order new episodes of the Family Guy spin-off. The series remains the only MacFarlane-produced show that has not been renewed for next season (the other two being Family Guy and American Dad).

It should be noted that Fox has been known in the past to pull animated series (including King of the Hill and Family Guy) from its schedule, only to have them return to the air later in the season. However, the Animation Guild – representing the show’s artists – has already announced via its blog that The Cleveland Show will end with season 4 this May, making its cancellation seemingly inevitable at this point.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that fans have seen the last of Cleveland Brown (and his “happy mustache face“). Should Fox officially cancel the series, it’s quite likely that he could return to Family Guy and bring along other Cleveland Show characters. Mike Henry (who provides the voice of Cleveland) has remained a consistent performer on Family Guy throughout its run, bringing to life a number of recurring characters, including creepy old Herbert and Consuela the maid.

In fact, Cleveland’s potential return could provide a bit of a boost to Family Guy. Cleveland, Peter, Joe and Quagmire frequently shared storylines in earlier seasons, and the dynamic at their favorite bar, The Drunken Clam, hasn’t quite been the same since the spin-off began. Besides, Family Guy – much like its progenitor, The Simpsons – prides itself on offering viewers numerous wacky recurring characters. Why not add the cast of The Cleveland Show into the fold?

As far as MacFarlane’s career, the end of The Cleveland Show might actually prove to be a good thing, as he already has numerous TV and film projects in various stages of development. In addition to his current Fox series, MacFarlane is developing a live-action comedy series for the network with Ted writers Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild, a Ted sequel and western comedy A Million Ways to Die (starring Liam Neeson, Giovanni Ribisi and possibly Oscar winner Charlize Theron).

Are you disappointed to see The Cleveland Show fade into television history, or would you prefer MacFarlane devote his focus to other projects? Let us know in the comments section below.

The Cleveland Show airs (for now, at least) on Sundays @7:30pm on Fox.

  1. I love the Cleveland Show but I will admit the show has been less funny to me but me being the loyal fan you watch it anyway. sigh…… Oh well

  2. Never looked the show, i wasn’t interested the fact that Cleveland character didn’t have proper development in Family Guy helped it. Family Guy is kinda lame right now so him returning in Quahog would be a good thing

  3. am a huge fan of family guy and american dad but the cleveland show is not theat funny and they should bring him back to famliy guy and take the crew from the cleveland show

  4. Honestly, I found The Cleveland Show to be the weakest of the three.

Weird thing is that when Cleveland has a few episodes of hilarity, Family Guy and American Dad suffer with a few bad episodes so you can sort of tell where the focus is being placed at times.

Wouldn’t be sad to see it canceled though in all honesty. I’m just a little bummed that we won’t get any more Die Hard parodies.

  5. YES! cleveland is coming home.

gonna be honest, this show failed. they completely changed the character and made him a peter clone. though this season was the best and it was getting better.

it reminds me of american dad, that was trying too hard to be like family guy but after the third season it came into its own and is even better than family guy. roger is just amazing XD

  6. Meh.the Cleveland show kinda sucked anyways, so might as well bring him back home to family Guy.

  7. i was waiting for this to happen. The show wasn’t terrible but it didn’t work as far as a series is concerned.

Glad its gone, we can make room for other cartoon shows on FOXs Animation Domination

  8. Yeah, i rather see a Principle Lewis spin off than Cleveland. With that said, i’m not sure how Cleveland with his new family would transition back into the mix with rolo, rebertta, donna etc.

But American Dad to me remains to be the funniest of the three now, it started weak but actually got alot better. Family guy just kinda got repetitive and Peter gets a bit annoying at times.

  9. Probably we can finally get a series focusing on Family Guy’s Mayor West 😀

    • Adam Wessst Adam Wessst:D

  10. Never really liked this show but i cant wait for cleveland to be back in fam guy

  11. Loved the Cleveland Show. But man if FOX replace it with some crap am gonna be pissed.

  12. Recently I’ve preferred The Cleveland Show to Family Guy. Cleveland is more story oriented where as FG just throws together a bunch of gags loosely based on a common theme. For me, Cleveland and Bob’s Burgers are the only real enjoyable shows to catch at their regular time slot. The rest I can see at my leisure on Hulu.

  13. Family Guy is going to have to carry the load once the Simpsons finally ends it’s run, and those are going to be impossible shoes to fill….

    • if the simpsons goes off air the thing that replaces it is the simpsons lol. re runs.

      • even though the simpsons is nothing like it used to be. imo the best thing is american dad right now. but simpsons get the viewers.

  14. Will crap be replacing crap?

  15. I hope so, Cleavland show is terrible.

  16. Isn’t Macfarlane also working on a Flintstone cartoon remake as well?

    • @Stark

    • He was. But not anymore. It’s been put on hold, bc he’s busy with Ted 2 and Family Guy. So it probably won’t happen.

  17. I thought Macfarlane was also doing a remake of the old science program Cosmos?

  18. Only 4 seasons too late.

  19. i saw it coming. it jumped the shark when rosie perez started singing. and the last few episodes have focused too much on that. come home cleveland.

  20. freaking fox

  21. To me, The Cleveland Show is the smarter, funnier show of the three. Family
Guy hasn’t been very funny in years, I actually turned one off the other day. I do enjoy American Dad quite a bit more than Family Guy. Maybe I’ve just grown tired of the Family Guy formula. I don’t find The Cleveland Show to be a rip off, most shows in general with a family setting include a father who isn’t the brightest and is the butt of many jokes. Anyways, I hope they renew.

  22. Do a spin off with Mayor West

  23. Didn’t family Guy get cancelled twice? This is nothing new for Seth.

  24. Not a big loss me thinks. I was never a big fan of the show. None of the characters really stood out to me like say Roger does or Stewie. I’m surprised it even lasted this long.

  25. Not surprising at all. It needed to end anyway. It wasn’t very funny, and it was taking up space. American Dad is the show to watch.

    • I agree with you on all counts, dude. American Dad is the best one of the lot. Roger is a god.

  26. As long as American Dad stays on the air I am fine.

  27. I stopped watching at the end of season 3. Just wasn’t funny anymore…
Cleveland is a great “chuructur” though 😉 I hope he moves back to Quahog.

  28. cleve show is hilarious but i agree american dad has me in tears always lmao roger
