With the solid success of the Clash of the Titans remake ($486 million worldwide on a budget of $125 million), it’s no wonder Warner Bros. is looking ahead to a sequel.
We reported back in April that Clash of the Titans 2 was moving ahead without Louis Leterrier returning to direct. Fast-forward to today and we’re hearing word that the Clash of the Titans sequel might be upon us sooner rather than later, with a shortlist of directors already drawn up.
24 Frames reports that Clash of the Titans 2 could start shooting as early as January 2011, which means we might see the film in theaters before the end of that year (a Holiday season release, perhaps?). The film already has a screenwriter in the form of Greg Berlanti (Green Lantern) but now that Leterrier isn’t directing, that leaves a noticeably empty director’s chair.
There’s reportedly a shortlist of directors the studio is looking at for the Titans sequel, with Jonathan Liebesman apparently right at the top. Liebesman started off as a horror director, helming such films as Darkness Falls and the 2006 Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel. More recently he’s set his sights on being an action director, helming the upcoming Battle: Los Angeles, as well as a re-imagining of Odysseus, which Liebesman helped conceive and eventually sold to WB.
Leterrier was a good choice to direct the first Titans film because of his experience with action with films like Transporter 1 & 2 and, of course, The Incredible Hulk. But Liebesman is much more of an unusual choice to direct the sequel. Perhaps a more established action director should taken the helm instead of someone whose real experience is in the horror genre(?).
In other Titans 2 news, we’re hearing that the sequel will be shot in 3D as opposed to converted at a later stage. If you saw the first Clash of the Titans in 3D then you know all too well how bad the 3D was – the fact that they are actually shooting the sequel in 3D is fantastic news.
Finally, as far as Sam Worthington returning as Perseus goes, he’s committed to Avatar 2, which could start shooting late next year. In that case, Titans 2 would need to shoot long before the sequel to the most successful movie of all time goes into production.
Would you like to see Liebesman direct the Clash of the Titans sequel? How happy are you that it will be shot in 3D instead of converted in post-production? And would you like Worthington to return for the sequel?
As stated, Clash of the Titans 2 could shoot as early as next January and will likely be released in 2011 or 2012.
