Cillian Murphy May Play ‘I’m.mortal’ Villain

Irish thespian Cillian Murphy is currently making rounds in theaters as the target of a subconscious heist in Inception.  His next appearance may be in another brain-stimulating sci-fi feature, entitled I’m.mortal, the newest project from writer/director Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, The Truman Show).

I’m.mortal takes place in the relatively near future, where scientists have discovered how to shut off the aging gene in humans.  Now that overpopulation is a more serious concern than ever, individuals must pay for the time they spend alive – once they have reached the age of 25, that is.

Murphy is in talks to play a member of the Timekeepers, an organization that keeps tabs on the general population and makes sure they do not chince on their time-related expenses.  The role that Murphy would occupy is seemingly that of an anal-retentive fellow, one who is as “precise as the time he keeps.”

Trouble presents itself in the form of a young man (a role Justin Timberlake may play), who finds himself accused of murder when he suddenly comes into an immense fortune of time.  The lower-class gentleman ends up kidnapping a rich heiress (Amanda Seyfried) when he sets out on the run from the Timekeepers and the government they represent.

Cillian Murphy Roles Cillian Murphy May Play Im.mortal Villain

Two very different faces of Cillian Murphy.

Most moviegoers are familiar with Murphy’s villain credentials from seeing him play Scarecrow in Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies, though some may have also seen him play the bad guy in Wes Craven’s 2005 suspense pic, Red Eye.  Props to those who have checked out Murphy’s appearance opposite his Inception costar Ellen Page in the Hitchcockian psycho-thriller, Peacock as well.

Murphy’s resume extends far beyond those pics and includes roles in the Danny Boyle-directed films 28 Days Later and Sunshine – not to mention independent features like Breakfast on Pluto and The Wind That Shakes the Barley.  Suffice it to say, he is a worthy addition to the cast of any movie.

I’m.mortal begins shooting this September and will likely reach theaters sometime in 2011.

  1. I think this could be a fantastic role for him- potentially humorous in a similarly sardonic and toxic manner to much of the cast of Brazil, while still being a genuinely dangerous figure.

I’m eager to see what comes to be of this.

  2. i think he a badd @SS actor, he did pritty good in inception and all his other movies

  3. he has such a presence on screen he is a great actor.

  4. Cillian Murphy is an excellent actor, and I am sure he would do an awesome job in this role. I have to say though that the plot of I’m.mortal sounds, not exactly but, very much like Logan’s Run.
