Chuck season 5 renewal nbc Yvonne Strahovski Zachary Levi Chuck Closes In On Season 5 Renewal

Sources close to the matter claim that NBC’s spy guy Chuck will get a fifth season order any day now. This will be the third straight year the show has beaten the odds for a renewal.

The fifth season of Chuck is currently slated for 13 episodes to begin in the fall. That’s a little short for a broadcast show, and may be extended if next week’s season finale shows strong. NBC exercised a similar option in 2009.

Chuck‘s third and fourth seasons were both questionable picks for renewals, but the fanbase is a vocal one. While ratings have declined along a predictable curve for a comedy, they’ve remained steadily in the 4-5 million range for the 2010-2011 run.

After rumors of the show’s cancellation circled in 2009, fans organized a campaign to send the secret agent some backup. In addition to various email and Twitter campaigns from both fans and critics, a mass patronage of Chuck sponsor Subway caught the attention of NBC.

Chuck’ Season 4 finale will air this coming Monday night. The episode is titled “Chuck vs The Cliffhanger”, and will feature the titular spy teaming up with Alexei Volkoff/Agent X/Hartley Winterbottom (fan favorite and former 007 Timothy Dalton) to save his wedding to Sarah.

Chuck is now one of the only bubble show on NBC’s renewal list. Parenthood received a third season pickup with a full 22 episode run, while David E. Kelley’s latest legal drama Harry’s Law also received a second season.

While Chuck‘s rabid fanbase will certainly be pleased at the news, the declining ratings for the show are hard to ignore. Expect some more significant cuts in the budget next year as producer Warner Bros. tightens its belt. The most likely result of  a cash crunch would be fewer of the series’ enjoyable guest stars on screen.

There’s no news on the actors’ contracts or how they would apply to a new season. While the core cast will almost certainly return, supporting players may be harder to hold on to.

Chuck airs Monday nights at 8PM on NBC. Season 4 concludes on May 16th.

  1. 1) Many times the crazy and sometimes over-the-top antics on ‘Chuck’, especially by the non-spy members of the Buy More, just come across as childish and stupid. It is not a suprise that ‘Chuck’ always has low ratings. This is probably one of the reasons why the even more over-the-top ‘Breaking In’ was cancelled.

    2) Parenthood is one hour long. I believe it would be better classified as a drama.

    • Firefly had even lower ratings and it got canceled, although it is one of the best shows ever. Do you pick what is popular or what you like? First season of Chuck kicks asses of all other comedy shows. Unique.

  2. Thanks for the correction. Shows like ‘Parenthood’ aren’t really on my radar.

  3. Have loved Chuck from the start, but, I do think much of the writing over the last season has just become a bit, lame. I really wouldn’t miss it at this point.

    • I used to think that Chuck was awesome up until a few episodes into this season which is when I quit watching.

      • Still remember the first season and it was the best show in its times. Original and funny. It is going down along seasons but I will always remember amazing start.

  4. yes!!! i love chuck hope season 5 will be awesome

  5. Although the show’s 4th season episodes weren’t as entertaining as the first 3, i believe the show does deserve another season. I guess the fans kinda liked the idea that Chuck and Sarah are finally together. Maybe the reason why the ratings have declined tremendously in the last 2 seasons is because some find it less entertaining since they decided to make Chuck a real spy; it kinda lost the ultimate “Nerd” charm it had at the beginning. But i hope the show gets more episodes though.. I’d be glad to see more romance, and more of morgan and casey :))

    • You know what, i also felt the same thing by season 3, they’ve been turning Chuck into a spy but it sort-of took away the ‘nerd’ aspect of Chuck Bartowski, but then again, It’s in Chuck’s fantasy (as a nerd) that he becomes a SPY, and have a hot girlfriend to accompany him. So far as the comedic, nerdy, and goofball aspect of the show, it slowly ran-out during season 3. Chris Fedak always comes back will nerdy situations for Chuck and Morgan (with Morgan being into Chuck’s spy team).

Chuck had a good run on TV. I hope they will get the ‘full-24′ or even better a Season 6

      • As much as i love the show, i do not think it should get a sixth season. NBC only ordered 13 episodes for Season 5 and they claim that will be it, but i hope they get 22 episodes so they can finish off the show with 100 episodes. Chuck was a good show but it has to come to its end this season.

  6. We need more of Casey’s grunts!!!!

  7. Chuck is one of my favorite shows, but even I will admit it’s not been as good this year. I still watch it regularly, but mostly from the DVR. If they want to get rid of dead weight on the show get rid of Jeff and Lester. Every scene they are in is about the worst one of the show. No one cares about those characters and they are dragging down the show!!!

  8. I’m a British teenager and I love watching Chuck, it gets better and better, although some of the characters are rather pointless. Chuck and Sarah are perfect for eachothers and I can’t keep my eyes off the box! Been watching since the start and never want it to end.

  9. I love this show even the 4th season, I can’t believe what i’m reading about this new season granted that I don’t like the budget cut. the reason the ratings drop is because people like the fans of the show has to work so we have no chose but to watch it online. CHUCK is the only show I care for on TV and there is alot of shows on TV that I like but wouldn’t care if it gos off air. I’m trying to get Mondays off or Friday when ever the new day is for the new season for chuck is so I can watch it.

    • I like chuck (all seasons really) only my problem is that its on the most strange times(i live in the netherlands), so i only watch it online like a few friends of mine.

  10. And I don’t like that it only has 13 episodes set for the 5th season it needs no it deserves more episodes. And i would like it if it keeps coming back for moor season after the 5th one.

    • yes I really hope that after the 5th season their wil be a 6th season

  11. And some of the characters are not pointless every character is what makes the show good.

    • Agreed.

  12. Chuck is the MOST amazing show ever! It can never end! Come on guys get these ratings up! I mean seriously the season 4 finale had me jump out of my seat at the end! It was amazing I couldn’t hardly believe it. It has to come back I NEED to know what happens next!!!!

  13. chuck is the freaking best show in the world, i love it :D

    chuck is great!!

  14. Really can someone tell me honestly they would miss Jeff and Lester and the other non-spy characters like Big-Mike. They are so embarrassing for the show as well as childish an pointless. On the other hand the part where all the family and friends are involved in the spy world is the best part of the scenario. It makes the non-nerd of us connected to those characters as well. And who cares about fancy known actors featuring in the next possible season 5. Give a chance to new comers with some talent and put the money in 24 episodes instead of 13.

  15. i love this song season 4 was abit boring but the way they ended season 4 i deff bloody want to see season 5 mogen is like chuck now he has the that computer thing in him and they have formed there own team aswell

  16. Chuck has always been a brilliant series, season 4 had me more gripped then other seasons had done because nearly every single week you had a cliff hanger which would make me shout angerily at my laptop cos i didn’t want to wait another week to watch chuck lol
