chuck season 4 premiere Chuck Season 4 Premiere Review & Discussion

With the Chuck season 4 premiere, everyone’s favorite reluctant spy is back. Of course, after the events in the Chuck season 3 finale, nothing is going to be the same in the life of Chuck Bartowski. With Chuck’s father being killed in the finale, his world was turned upside down. That was, of course, until Chuck found out his father’s biggest secret – his mother is still alive.

As we start season 4, Chuck’s focus is solely on tracking down his mother. His mother, in this case, just happens to be played by the Terminator fighting Linda Hamilton. For a geek show, such as Chuck, that part couldn’t have been better cast. With The Ring out of the way and Ellie now knowing Chuck’s alter-ego, their relationship will be forever changed. While Ellie may know that Chuck is a spy, she still doesn’t know that her mother is alive. Neither does anyone else in Chuck’s life… except for Morgan.

Chuck (Zachary Levi) and Morgan (Joshua Gomez) go on a rogue globe-spanning mission to find Chuck’s mom. Meanwhile, Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) and Casey (Adam Baldwin) follow a trail to Russia as they investigate the mysterious Volkoff Industries and its operative, Marco (guest star Dolph Lundgren). Back at home, Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) delivers big news to her family. Bonita Friedericy also stars.

From start to finish, the episode was fantastic. Ellie finally finding out Chuck’s secret was a wonderful reveal – one that was played out in a simple, yet impactful scene. Many other series would have built up that moment until the last minute, but considering how many equally as impactful reveals are contained in this finale, there was no room for that – and, for this, I couldn’t be happier.

Side note: (The butt kicking spy work that is always at the core of everything might, at times, over-shadow Chuck and Ellie’s relationship. That being said, chalk it up to good writing, great acting or me being sucker for NBC trickery, but Chuck and Ellie, in my opinion, have the most realistic brother-sister relationship on television. )

In the end, the cowboy-esque final fight between Chuck and Shaw was pretty great, but made so much better by the Jeffster! music video playing in the background. Morgan and Casey as the new power couple are hilarious as ever, but made even more so by the fact that Morgan is going after Casey’s daughter. When it comes down to it, Chuck can be defined as a series that takes each and every storyline, character and idea and makes it better in every single way.

chuck series finale chuck morgan Chuck Season 4 Premiere Review & Discussion

With as much closure as the third season finale provides fans, there was equally as much foreshadowing of things to come in the fourth season. What makes it even better is the fact that Chuck has literally reinvented itself – the term “game changer” has never been so appropriate.

The promise Chuck made to Ellie that he would retire out of the governmental spy business surely puts the fourth season in an odd predicament. Luckily, everyone loves a good loophole and one is wonderfully provided through Papa Bartowski’s secret vault where Chuck, as a spy now working for himself, can take on as many evil organizations as his heart desires. Oh, and then there’s his mom!

People talk about how character development is integral to the success of any show, but often they forget to mention that the development and growth of a series itself is just as important. If you look at television today, you’ll see many series (Read: CSI, NCIS, Law & Order) that, week after week, deliver cookie-cutter programming. Thankfully, Chuck is the antithesis of that type of show and is the perfect example of a series that continuously grows and develops along with its characters.

With an amazing fourth season already slated for a fall premiere, I have no reason to believe this series is going anywhere.

  1. ugh the wait is killng me..

  2. thanks man

  3. I feel like a giddy school girl between chuck and Supernatural my head is going to explode from excitment.

Sadly I’m working so don’t get to watch til tomorrow. What would I do with out DVR.

    • damnit daniel, how cant i talk about it now LOL. just remember..”I must break you”

  4. Don’t worry Anthony you can still talk about it. I’m not worried about spoilers really. I usually only get upset about spoilers on a finale and usually welcome them for start of a new season.

Was it good ? Right behind Supernatural for me second most anticipated return. Also excited for House which I can’t watch for two more days.

    • yes, it was great, though, Morgan is starting to get on my nerves more lol. yeah this and Supernatural have also been my most two anticpated returns this season.

      • It wasn’t their strongest episode but it was fun. It was great to see Linda vs. Dolph.

  5. Wasn’t as great as other episodes but was still VERY satisfying. No doubt there will be a Terminator reference from Linda but what’s with the lack of Awesome in the episode :(

      • yeah they shoulda went with a 2 hour premire

        • They easily could have expanded the story – or done without the whole sexting subplot.

NBC seems too busy promoting The Event to worry about the show that’s pulling people to their network on Monday nights.

          • morgan taking it upon himself to sext with chucks womam…thats a breech of broism in my book

            • Indeed. They need to duct tape him to a chair and let Casey resume plucking his beard out one hair at a time. It was funny when Sarah caved on the plane & began snapping shots of herself, though. Hopefully they’ll give her more to do this season.

  6. Honestly I’d love to see less Big Mike and a lot less Jeffster. I love Awesome though. Chuck would be my fave show on television currently if not for Jeffster I hate those idiots.

    • Morgan is my achillies heel, he’s gonna end up getting someone close to chuck killed with his stupidity lol.

    • It’d be hard to see less of them than we saw in tonight’s episode. :)

  7. Hardcore spoiler in the excerpt for those who are behind on the show.

  8. I like Morgan but I seriously hate Jeff and Lester. I have almost stopped watching the show a few times because of them. An episode could be going so great and suddenly they show up and almost suck all the enjoyment out of it. Some of the best episodes have been held back because of Jeff and Lester. I think they are two of the worst characters I’ve ever seen on a show. They bring nothing to the table. They are not funny but instead extreamly annoying and there is nothing to their characters at all they are no demensional. I hate Will Ferrall and Jack Black but I’d rather see them do a buddy cop movie than watch Jeff and Lester.

    • lol…dont put that idea on the table lol. i dislike ferrell these days, i dispise black..

    • Jeff and Lester are awesome. If you remove anyone from the Chuck cast, it won’t be Chuck anymore. As simple as that. Go and play with your dinky now. Ktxhbye.

  9. I hope Munn’s Greta won’t be that much of an important character in the story but then again bumbling idiots like Morgan need some love too. I just cant stand her…

    • morgan needs a brainwipe

      • Oh I’m sure that will come sooner or later from Casey, he is hitting on his daughter after all.

  10. I don’t know if I hate Will or Jack more. I hate every movie Will is in except one but I love that one and he’s even the star and does very well in it. That was Stranger Than fiction.

Jack I actually like a decent amount of his movies but it’s never because of him. I’ve never seen a performance from him that I liked he just tends to work with a great cast like in High Fidelity or Tropic Thunder. However , While I hate him as an actor and don’t find him funny Iove his music and consider it hilarious.

    • He had a great part, though I think it was lost amidst the other guest stars. I liked the bit about the Chinese restaurant. :)

  11. Very angry. I get home this morning all amped to see Chuck only to discover my piece of junk DVR decided to not record it. I suspect my GF hit a button and cancelled it but can’t be sure. Either way I have no chuck.

Anyone know if NBC posts the episode on their site to view so I can see it?

    • I missed it too because I thought it started next week. Watched it online not bad had me laughing out loud.

    • Daniel f, I went to fastpasstv to watch it.

  12. hi guys, im a new chuck fan here. i love chuck(actually the supporting actors sarah, casey, awesome, morgan and ellie more than chuck himself)! anyway, just wondering why more ppl are not watching this show. this show is awesome compared to so many other popular shows like two and a half men/how i met your mother. though this is not a comedy by its premise, the comedy in this one beats mainstream comedies! I LOVE chuck.

P.S. No Idea about season 4 though. I hope its gonna be good
