chronicles of riddick 3 Vin Diesel To Return In R Rated Riddick Sequel?

Both ShockTillYouDrop and Bloody-Disgusting got a chance to sit down with Pitch Black/Chronicles of Riddick writer, David Twohy, who gave an update on the status of the third Riddick movie. The writer/director of the upcoming A Perfect Getaway confirmed that he and star Vin Diesel are currently in the midst of discussions of how to bring the character back for a third movie, including a very welcome detail that they are aiming for an R-Rated movie again.

Twohy co-wrote and directed Pitch Black back in 2000, before going on four years later to solely write and direct its step-down sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick. Pitch Black was rated R and delivered a pretty hardcore sci-fi action/horror movie that still holds up today. Its sequel was brought down to a PG-13 rating, and even Twohy himself agrees that was a mistake for the series. Check out some of what Twohy said about what direction he and Diesel are aiming to take the franchise for the third installment:

“I’ve sketched out two ideas for the next installment… Vin [Diesel] and I have decided on one approach of those two, and there’s some interest at the studio level but it would be as a PG-13 film, and we don’t want to do that anymore. That’s one of the concessions we thought we made with ‘Riddick’ that we shouldn’t have made.”

“We also spent too much money and we were too ambitions, so yes, if we do go back to a third one, it will be focused again, hopefully again the same way that ‘Pitch Black’ was, and we’ll spend less money doing it. We’re just trying to figure out how much less we can do it for, because I don’t think Vin is going to work for scale again.”

Twohy has said that they’re specifically aiming for the third Riddick to be R-Rated, even wanting to make sure they have some control over it to make that rating possible:

“We want an R, so we are looking at the possibility of setting it up as an independent movie and selling it territory by territory and thereby keeping an ownership stake in the movie. But we’re trying to see what that would yield in this unsafe market…”

Twohy also explained that the third Riddick would be a lot more scaled down in size compared to The Chronicles of Riddick, being much more akin to Pitch Black in that sense. He says that the story will always be Riddick-centric, and gives his opinion that even if you took the creatures out of Pitch Black, you still have some very interesting character dynamics. Is that a hint that we’d see more character interaction than we would full-on creature attacks? Interesting.

On top of working hard on ideas for Riddick 3 (hey, we’re calling Batman 3 as such…), Twohy also has a supernatural thriller on his plate which he has written himself called Crying Havoc. That is set to be produced by none other than Ridley Scott. Here’s what Twohy had to say about the project:

“[My next movie] could be a supernatural thriller called CRYING HAVOC that Ridley Scott would produce and I would direct. It’s about an FBI agent who uses technology to track a spy across the world only to learn that the spy is more of a demon than a man. That chase leads our FBI agent into the lower circles of hell, at least psychologically speaking. I think it’s a very cool supernatural thriller with a lot of great visuals to it. That’s already written and that could pop next. Ridley has been shepherding that project along.”

Personally, I would be extremely interested in seeing the Riddick series return to its R-Rated roots. Pitch Black is still a very effective and legitimately atmospheric sci-fi action/horror, and I was sad to see the series movie away from that to the safer action adventure style that The Chronicles of Riddick had. It really sounds like Twohy (and Diesel) are passionate about the Riddick character – the franchise is in motivated hands, at least.

Would you prefer that the Riddick series go back to being R-Rated as Pitch Black was? Any thoughts on what the premise for the third Riddick movie could be?

Although no filming or release date has been set as of yet for Riddick 3, Twohy hinted at a possible production date of early 2010.

  1. I’d like a third, R-rated Riddick, but I’d be disappointed if they didn’t pick up on the story of what he does with the Necromongers. Does he use them to conquer the universe? Or does he just “promote” them all to “fully-dead”?

  2. Vin Diesel in another sequel… hmm.

  3. I really really liked Pitch Black, but I also thought that Chronicles of Riddick was OK. They tried to do too much and I agree that by not sticking with the formula that made Pitch Black a success (R-rating), they shot themselves in the foot. That said, I would really like to see a 3rd Riddick film, if it’s kind of an amalgam of the first 2. (With more of Pitch Black than Chronicles).

  4. Yeah i wonder what he is gonna do since he’s the leader now and everything lol. But I reckon R-Rated all the way with intense fight scenes and of course a good story line

  5. I was never too interested in the Vin Diesel/Riddick stuff like Pitch Black. I never saw it because it didn’t seem interesting at the time based on the previews, couldn’t relate to the whole tough guy attitude, but after playing the game, Escape From Butcher Bay, I understood the “I’m a bad-ass” attitude Riddick has so I decided to go back and watch Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick. I liked both, as much as people hated COR, I saw only the director’s cut, and I think it was better than the theatrical cut. I mean, yes the story is pretty cheesy, but I found it entertaining, it had some nice visuals and the action was pretty good.

I would love to see another Riddick, but my concern is this. Even from Pitch Black (and EFBB which was a prequel) you never really SEE his “bad side.” You just assumed it because he keeps referring to it and the fact that he is a prisoner, but other than that, you don’t actually SEE it. He never actually kills anyone in Pitch Black unprovoked. He even challenges the co-pilot on her morality. So we see him basically being a good guy in Pitch Black, then we see him in Chronicles of Riddick, also being a good guy, but just with the knowledge that he was a bad guy before in the back of our mind.

I think that was a big reason why Pitch Black seemed to have such great character interaction was because you never know if he’s really trying to help them or just helping himself. So you don’t know to like him or if you should expect to see him betraying them all. COR you didn’t think about that as much and now with a 3rd, that aspect will be completely lost and Riddick will just be another good guy that is really talented at killing people. Probably will still be entertaining and his sarcastic remarks will sure to get some laughs but I think that aspect will be missing still.

I personally think that made more of a difference between Pitch Black and COR than the rating did…

  6. I avoided one of the Ken’s rants being delivered to my inbox – sweet!

anyway, another riddick movie is welcomed. there wasn’t too much action in the first one (not pitch black), it was just enough and plenty of filler which I liked.

  7. Aw, thanks for the shout-out, you’re so sweet! :-P

  8. They were two very different movies. I don’t think the ratings were the issue.

  9. Two good flicks, different ratings but both good. The R rating for the third will please fans of the first, everybody i knew who liked Pitch Black loved the Chronicles of Riddick just as much. Rating didn’t matter.

  10. I also like Pitch Black, a lot. I thought it was really cool, but I hated COR, and much more due to the fact they made Riddick that kind of a hero and good guy, as Ken J pinted out, which was not present in Pitch Black. In PB he wasn’t the protagonist (for me), there were others too but they took him and made a “sequel” about only him which pissed me a lot. So, naturally I have no interest in any new COR film.

  11. As crazy as this may sound I haven’t seen Pitch Black, but I’ll make it a point to watch it!! Now in Riddick that movie was off the HIZZLE people even when it was PG-13 the effects were great and the story line was too!!!! But I do remember Riddick being about saving his own skin before others in Pitch Black (the little that I got see), although in Riddick they made him look like a hero you can still see some of that selfish way still it’s like being a good guy or a bad guy war within himself!!!! I can’t wit to see a Riddick 3!!!! Peace!!!!

  12. Wow, there’s more love for The Chronicles of Riddick than I thought there was. Glad to see love for Pitch Black, too. Such a rewatchable movie.

  13. I heard once that the budget for riddick 3 was thirty-five million and have a lot to do with mercs than necromongers.

  14. Actually saw Chronicles the other night on tv. An ok movie, but I’m surprised to see it was written by the same person as the first – it felt so far removed from the intense, personal story of Pitch Black.
Glad to see talk of making it more like the first. That interests me.

Have to agree with Ken though, Riddick’s dark side has been more talk than show so far.

  15. Both of the Riddick films kicked ars.
I only hope they continue where they left off in COR…

    Or I’ll be Furian!

  16. I find it surprising that all the critics hated the Chronicles of Riddick. But everyone I talked to loved it. It is one of the most viewed movies on the internet! There should be a third movie. They owe it to us. Riddick is now a leader. And the series almost mirrors the Conan comics with a twist. The 3rd movie should be the same way. Just like Conan the King. Show Riddick leading the Necros to Furya and trying to hold on to his newly won empire. Because all those generals bowed down to him. But how many are truly loyal. Because I remember that one of them definitely wanted to kill the Lord Marshall.

  17. “Chronicles of Riddick” kicked major ass.!!!!

Its one of my favorite sci-fi films.

  18. Regarding the character that wanted to kill the Lord Marshal, the thing is, it was mainly instigated by his wife, who basically manipulated him into wanting to kill him. So should he kill the guy? The problem will still exist, that woman will seduce another high ranker and manipulate him. Should he kill her? Then the guy will want to kill Riddick for sure. Should he kill both of them? That would probably make the most sense, but I’m trying to think of something that doesn’t involve killing off the sexy black chick… :-D

  19. Pitch Black = Excellent. COR = Atrocious Film. With both those statements being made…. I would actually still like to see a 3rd film and hope they could pull the franchise back up to where it belongs.

  20. It would be so GREAT if we wen’t back to ‘pitch black’ roots. I loved both films. But the lighting and edge pitch black had was closer to art work. Riddick Was more of a modern day Dune type epic sci fi. Man if they could mix the two up a bit it would make this fan so psyched, What ever happens, I just hope it happens !!!! Long Live the Riddick the true quizat zadderac…. Moahdeeb no longer needs the weirding module !

  21. all of you have great ideas and insights, ive loved reading what other people think of the series. Ive been a fan of the series sence the start. seen both movies, played both gamed and seen the animated short flim too. Riddick is not good or evil, he only looks out for himself and does what he has to to survive. pitch black, in my opinion was the last great of the sci-fi/horror that has come out in years. tcor seemed to me like it was rushed and the story was compacted into the time alloted. it was a good movie if you like riddick but if you were new to the series you might be turned off of the series just because of it. based on the whole series, its all just diffrent stories revolving around riddick. sometimes its mercs, prison guards, bounty hunters, hungry aliens, or necros. I think the third movie should go further into his roots, tell us more about his home world and why he is the only one left of his race. based on what has happened in the series so far the movie should be another random set of events.

  22. I think the third riddick should give a hole different view and install cyborgs and either Will Smith or Denzell Washington to upgrade the ratings.

  23. I think the third riddick should give a whole different view and instal cyborgs and either Will Smith or Denzell Washington to upgrade the ratings.

  24. I think the third Riddick should give a whole different view and install cyborgs and either Will Smith or Denzell Washington to upgrade the ratings.

  25. I think in the Riddick sequel Riddick should give a whole different view and add cyborgs and also put in a familar face like Will Smith or Denzell Washington to upgrade the ratings.
