New ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ Movie in the Works

Three years have passed since 20th Century Fox released The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader to a less-than-expected box office take and mixed reviews. That film marked Fox’s effort to resurrect the franchise after Disney – which released the first two films – passed on the opportunity to develop a third adaptation of the novels by C.S. Lewis. Collectively, the three Narnia films have earned more than $1.5 billion worldwide, but the future of the franchise has remained hanging in the balance since Dawn Treader failed to live up to expectations (it’s worth mentioning that the film still managed to bring in over $400 million worldwide).

Last we heard, The Magician’s Nephew – the first film in the series chronologically – was in line to become the next Narnia adaptation. However, Walden has since undergone restructuring and will instead focus on third-party productions, essentially meaning that the company is out of the Narnia business. It appeared as if fans’ hopes for another film were fading fast, but just like Aslan famously returned to the world of the living in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the Narnia film series will indeed live on.

The C.S. Lewis Company has announced a partnership with The Mark Gordon Company to develop and produce a fourth film in the series. Rather than going the prequel route, the companies are instead bringing The Silver Chair to the big screen. Originally published in 1953, the novel is set after the events of Dawn Treader and features the return of several of its key characters, though there’s no indication just yet if any of the cast or crew of the previous film will return. Gordon’s film production credits include Source Code and 2012.

This news certainly comes as good news to fans of the acclaimed seven-book Chronicles of Narnia series and means that there’s still a possibility that the entire saga may make its way to the big screen someday. Still, the announcement curiously makes no mention of Fox producing The Silver Chair, which may indicate that the studio has yet to commit to another Narnia film. The partnership between The C.S. Lewis Company and Gordon’s is a critical first step in backing the new film and starting it on its way to theaters, but until cameras start rolling, there’s still a chance that The Silver Chair may hit another roadblock, as such production difficulties have become especially commonplace for this franchise.

Are you looking forward to another visit to Narnia, or would you prefer that the powers that be give the film series a break? Sound off in the comments section below.

  4. Looking forward to new Narnia movies.

  5. Definitely hoping for another Narnia Movie. But hopefully, they can bring back the magic and wonders of the first Narnia movie (The Lion,The Witch and The Wardrobe), and perhaps even the actions from the second movie. I think it really was the beauty and the innocence of the first movie that captivated many of us in the first place. Well, at least it was for me…hehe

    • plz narnia come back :(((((((( !!!!!!!!

  6. I am a mother reading the series to her two sons, age 8 and 6. It is wonderful and we love it! The boys love that they can watch the movie afterward. We are a family that would love to see any of the other books made into movies. They are all excellent stories, and we have enjoyed the movies as a family tremendously. We have loved these books, and they have helped my boys to understand the Gospel better. So, back to the movies, yes, please make more :)

  7. Definitely they should do another chronicles of narnia all 7 books into films!!!

  8. I grew up on lake Atitlan in Guatemala, Central America and at the age of five, I had two Authors that kept my life interesting both C.S Lewis and J.J.R Tolken, these tow authors kept my life at peace during the civil war in Guatemala from 1973 to 1990s. I remember reading and rereading (5 times)both Chronicles of Narnia and the Hobbit Lord Of the Rings hoping that somehow the characters would emerge from their stories to guide me though the tough times that I went through as a kid. As you can imagine I have been overjoyed as a man now, to be able to see the three Beautiful films made so far.
To me it would be sad to hear that the rest of the movies will not be produced.
It should be about honoring C.S. Lewis and not about the money made.
I will always love C.S. Lewis for his work which helped me through some very hard times. The magic that came forth though the Chronicles of Narnia has always been spellbinding.
    Thank you.

  9. C.S. Lewis and J.R.R.Tolkein were literary friends, who decided to write legends to add to British literacy. There are parallels on subject matter between these authors works. The undercurrent of victory over evil, triumph in struggles etc. C.S. Lewis wrote the Magician’s Nephew as a prequel to the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe – really it should have been the first movie.

In reviewing movie profits, the industry overlooks the fact that C.S. Lewis’ books were written for children, to thrill them, but not to overwhelm them. The charm of the books inspires children all over the world to read, to see goodness and virtue, and to aspire in their own lives – that is the point. Not to keep Tilda Swinton in mink as an undefeatable witch – that is the point too – that good must conquor over evil so chldren may know that goodness can triumph and be victorious. If you change the true nature of these books in your bent to meet movie glory and profits – you change everything. Since the movie order has been to commence with the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe – progression must be in proper order – children, and the children who are now older or become adults with their own children will know the difference and expect to keep the order. They are your audience and they are the ones who will continue to attend and see the movies. Perhaps the prequel will be like prequels from other movies, such as Star Wars – they may come after when everyone yearns for more – perhaps they will be the greatest box office successes of all of books.

    • I respectfully disagree that Magician’s Nephew should have been the first movie made. It would be akin to watching the Star Wars saga in order. I saw Ep. 4-6 in theaters at original release, and the shock and emotional impact of Darth Vader’s revelation to Luke Skywalker would be completely gone had Ep. 1-3 actually been made first.

Similarly, there are too many “aha!” moments in Magician’s Nephew that would be completely ruined by progressing chronologically. There’s magic in mystery, and revealing the back story first spoils the magic by removing the mystery.

  10. As a mother and language arts teacher, I have tried to do my part by introducing generations of children to the Chronicles. As our children become more visually stimulated and less investigative (as readers), the movies (if true to Lewis) speak more clearly to them and (I have found) often encourage them to return to the series. I look forward to continuing to introduce my classes to Lewis’ Chronicles and I hope that my students will someday be able to witness all of the the beauty and majesty of Narnia on the bis screen.

  11. Please do another Narnia!!!

  12. I am looking forward to another narnia movie. I have finished the three movies there are and really want another one.

  13. I just sat and watched all three of the movies, They were just so amazing why would you not make another movie? I’ve become an entirely different person because of these movies, you need to keep going and make it happen, don’t just give up?

  15. Very thrilled to know that there will be more film adaptations. I’m extremely curious to know who will be portraying Eustace. Is Will Poulter coming back or will a new actor be cast considering he is much older now and wouldn’t look the right age for the story. Its I almost impossible to imagine another actor to be Eustace. If anyone has a clue, I would love to know.
