Next Narnia Film Will Be ‘The Magician’s Nephew’ Prequel

The future of The Chronicles of Narnia film franchise was called into question once again after The Voyage of the Dawn Treader suffered a rather disappointing debut at the box office – as well as a lukewarm response from audiences & critics.

Many fans speculated that if the series were to continue, bringing The Silver Chair to the big screen would be an effective way to revitalize the Narnia brand. As it turns out,  a fourth film is in development – but it looks like they’re instead going the prequel route with an adaption of The Magician’s Nephew.

Originally conceived as a franchise that could potentially rival the box office might of something like The Lord of the Rings, Walt Disney Pictures ultimately had a very different experience when it came to translating C.S. Lewis’ popular series of books from page to screen. After the poor performance of Prince Caspian, the studio opted out of further Narnia installments and 20th Century Fox stepped in to take over production of Dawn Treader.

Despite a more reasonable budget than its predecessors and the added draw of 3D, Dawn Treader only brought in $24.5 million its opening weekend and went on to gross a total of around $107 million domestically. Considering the film cost $155 million, those numbers were not encouraging. It looked as if audience interest in the Narnia series had severely waned and the risk of producing further installments would probably prove to be too great.

However, the film performed significantly better in foreign markets where it took in over $300 million. That puts Voyage‘s worldwide total just under Prince Caspian‘s – and that seems to be a gross that Fox can live with. Michael Flaherty, the president of Walden Media, revealed to The Christian Post that the ball is now rolling on the next entry in the series:

“We are starting to talk to Fox and talk to the C.S. Lewis estate now about the Magician’s Nephew being our next film … If we can all agree to move forward, then what we would do is find someone to write the script. So, it could still be a couple of years.”

Although The Magician’s Nephew was the sixth book published, it is the first story in the chronology of Lewis’ Narnia series. It centers around Digory Kirke (the younger version of Professor Kirke from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe) and Polly Plummer – two children who are transported to Narnia and at one point even bear witness to its creation. Flaherty indicates that he’s particularly enthusiastic about that chapter of the saga:

“I love the Magician’s Nephew because it’s a great origins story. You get to learn so much about where the wardrobe came from, where the lamppost came from, where Narnia came from.”

He also seems undaunted by the performance of the past two Narnia installments and mentions that The Magician’s Nephew is one of the more popular books amongst fans. Flaherty is hoping that admiration will help propel the film to greater heights at the box office:

“What’s interesting is that the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe over this period of time sold twice as many books as Prince Caspian and it did twice as much at the box office. Prince Caspian sold a third of the books as Dawn Treader and did a third at the box office … So while it’s not always a correlation between books to film, so far with these first three films, it has been.”

Chronicles of Narnia Dawn Treader Next Narnia Film Will Be The Magicians Nephew Prequel

'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader' hasn't sunk the Narnia franchise.

Of course, I remember them saying the same thing about The Voyage of the Dawn Treader before its release – and that popularity seems to be a double-edged sword since the books that were most beloved by readers are probably the ones that will come under the most scrutiny once they become films.

I think the three Narnia films to date have been serviceable, but not incredibly memorable. They seem to have taken a few more liberties with the books than something like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter – and while such deviations aren’t always deal breakers, the consensus from fans seems to be that the movies might be good, but they deserved to be great.

There are a lot of theories as to why this franchise never caught on quite like it was intended to, but I suppose the fact that the filmmakers are getting another shot at it is some sort of consolation.

Only time will tell if The Magician’s Nephew can steer this franchise back on track – or if the audience has grown tired of what Hollywood has done to The Chronicles of Narnia.

  1. Hardly a mystery. If the screen writers had set out to deny and trivialize the truths of the stories, they couldn’t have done a better job.

    • I can’t wait for the next movie! I’m always anxious to see the next movie!

  3. I really think these stories deserve the entire series. It would be a shame were the job left unfinished. I for one will go to see them all and buy them all on dvd because these are special stories that stay the test of time. Please keep going.

  4. Please do them all! I have been reading these books my entire life and would simply LOVE to see them bought to the screen! Personally I think the reason that ‘Dawn Treader’ didn’t do as well as the others was that they changed it so much, but to be brutally honest they had to to make it a interesting film. It works beautifully as a book, but for a feature film it needs more of a purpose and a story line. Please keep up the fantastic work!!
    - and avid fan!!

    • I agree with you completely! Its really to bad that it didn’t do so well. I love this series of Narnia movies and I hope they complete them all!! I love the books, and they mean so much to me. I hope they shoot the movies w/ the same actors that played the Pevensies in the films that those characters are in. So excited for the Magician’s Nephew. “For Narnia, and Aslan!!!”

  5. The reason The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe went so well was because it followed the book! After that it just went down hill. They just kept getting farther from what the books were. Sad really.

  6. I think they need to do ever book in the series. I wish they wouldve gone in order, but I have loved all of them. I think if they can stick with the book on this movie it would turn out good. I love finding out where things came from. They also need to finish the last 3. You need to know how they end up.

  7. PLEASE DO THEM ALL!! I’ve encouraged my friends and my family to watch the next films lol. PLEASE DO THEM ALL!! NARNIA MEANS EVERYTHING TO ME AND TO SOME OF MY FRIENDS.

  8. please I Love narnia. people in India love narnia very much. emerging economies can bring lot of money. think about it

  9. I love the Narnia film series and the books–I can’t help but wonder though if the Dawn Treader might have had a better following had the true ending of the book been followed with Caspian and Lilliandil falling in love and getting married. I was very disappointed with the ending and just figured that it would be the beginning of The Silver Chair to provide the foundation. It seems now that we are left hanging…and what about Eustace who is a main focus of the movie who travels back to Narnia one year after his first visit– by the time that The Silver Chair is made into a movie will he have aged too much for the part which would be ashamed since he did such a good job in his role.

    • I know, it will be a disappointment :( They should’ve flown with it while they still could. Because he’s also in the Last Battle.
Caspian and Lillandill aren’t really mentioned as far as marriage goes in the Dawn Treader book I don’t think, it is mentioned in the Silver Chair book though.

  10. if this series is redone keep Liam Neeson as Aslan. he did really well at that part. I personally enjoyed the movies and hope they complete it

  11. I didn’t really like The Voyage of the Dawn treader.
I am actually happy to know they have decided to make the Magician’s Nephew though! That is my favourite book in the Narnia series. It’s probably one of the most Magical. I’m quite excited to see how it ends up. I just hope they really make it just like the book and put a LOT of effort into how it looks. I hope they make it the best one, because I really want them to make all the books into movies.

    • The Magicians nephew was my favorite book as well & I hope they can pull it off. I know alot of people who are waiting for it!!

  12. Is Ben Barnes going to be in the movie?,i and my two boys enjoy the last movie, please have ben barnes in the movie hes a great actor!:)thanks adriana m. Grenot:)

To start the movies off with a “Middle of the Road” book, in my opinion was wrong. Trust me, I love the movies as well, but it will be confusing for those that are not familiar with the series. “The Magician’s Nephew” should have been first to begin with. I feel that it would have drawn people in, they would have wanted to know how it all turned out. But that’s just my opinion. I just want them all to be put on the big screen.

  14. I think the reason why The Voyage of the Dawn Treader didn’t do to well is because the book wasn’t all that great either. The Dawn treader book was an interesting book in the series, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I did the other ones. I think that’s why this one did poorly, because of the book, not that I don’t like it, I love the movie, but the book wasn’t one of my favorites either so…
I’m looking forward to the magicians nephew! :D It should be amazing to see the creation of Narnia.

  15. I loved the movies more than the books if that is even possible! Most of the time I love the books more, but they did such a wonderful job with all 3 movies so far. I would have seen Prince Caspian more in the theater, but I had a baby, so that was more challenging. Yet I did see it 3 times! And I thought they improved the Prince Caspian story in the movie which I thought was impossible. I saw the first movie and the 3rd movie both 5 times each!! I bought all three movies too. I would have seen them more but they left the theater before I could see them more times. Please make all of the books into movies! I love them so much! They are wonderful stories I want to share with my kids.

  16. I’m actually re watching the Voyage right now. I hated how they didn’t stay true to the book. There was absolutely nothing about a green mist in the book. I’m pretty sure that that’s one reason why it didn’t do too well.

    • yes, they should stick to the way CS Lewis wrote the story. The Magicians Nephew will be an exciting adventure to see on film with a pegasus, the evil queen, the streets of old London , 2 curious kids & talking animals!!!

  17. i hope they have to continue this movie, i really want to know if your continue… i love reading books… seen’s i started to watch the lord of the ring, harry, potter, and i am number four, and now i already watching whole story of twilight… pleazzzz….i’m so exited to this movie for this next chapter. from the lion the witch and the wardrobe…to.. all they next chapter untill we coming to the last stories.

  18. Well, I’ve never been much of a reader, sorry to say ! don’t know, ADD maybe ! So basically, I have to rely on the movies ! I love every installment of Narnia, and anxious for # 4 to get here ! Please hurry ! LOL !!!

  19. I love all the movies hope one comes out soon:)

  20. I am a huge Narnia fan and I would like to see the movies continued as would my family. We have read the books at school and home and followed the series with the collection of the DVDs and would like to see them finished and the last book bought to life please if all possible I hope this can happen! From a fan down under in beautiful nz

  21. I have always enjoyed all the books of Narnia and the movies. So I do hope you keep on making more so that I can see how the whole story comes to an end. I think all movies should finish the way they should not stop right in the middle that would not work for me so I do hope you make the magicians nephew and then the silver chair so I can be happy please

  22. I love the Narnia stories. I loved the way Prince Caspian was brought to life so beautifully on film. Film and books are different mediums, so different aspects needed to be emphasized on film to keep the audience’s interest. The same goes for Dawn Treader. Something had to tie the visits to the various islands together. So, adding the swords of the seven Lords as part of the qeust held the script together. The book does have a dark mist around Dark Island, but working the mist throughout, regardless of its color, also helped to keep the story from feeling disconnected. I wish The Silver Chair were next. I was looking forward to Will Poulter coming back as Eustace and Ben Barnes coming back as Caspian. I was very impressed with the way they played their roles. They are very talented young actors. I wish them well in their careers and hope to see more of them in other productions. I’m looking forward to seeing the Magician’s Nephew on film. I hope all seven books are turned into films. These are timeless stories that leave you feeling good at the end.

  23. the 3rd movie was awesome when i 1st saw it in theators but when i bought it and kept watching it it didnt stick like Prince Caspian and The lion, witch and warddrobe did… i think they need to keep the magic they had in the 1st movie with the new ones that they keep making- am excited to see the magicians nepheww!! i have a feelin this one will have the magic the 1st one had!!!

  24. :)

  25. the mist throughout the whole movie of dawn tredder made it exciting!

  26. they should also make a movie of “the boy and his horse” seriously! that was mi favorite book in the series!! just an idea :)

  27. i love narnia i remember my Nana reading me the books when i was little, in fact they were one of the first books i read all the way through and then watching them was even better i really hope they make the next movie to see how it turns out :-)

  28. I read all the books please come out with the movie, adriana:)

    • It’s really just sad how they wait so long for the magicians nephew to come out wen Harry potter had movies out every year. Just put it out in theaters already . Ill be 80 when the last one comes out. Ugh hurry up!!!!!!!!!

  29. i personally loved the books and i really hope they make all the series <3 if they dont i will be so sad because i loved all the movies and the books :))
