Chronicle 2 Script Fox Unhappy Fox Unhappy With Chronicle 2 Scripts Evolved Story

This year’s found footage flick Chronicle surprised many for being one of the better stories recently seen in the genre, due in no small part to the strength of the script. The success quickly spawned rumors of an imminent Chronicle 2, with screenwriter Max Landis signed on to continue the story.

In a candid moment, Max’s father Jon has explained things aren’t going as smoothly as one might think. Those hoping to see the premise and mysteries of the original explored further seem to be out of luck – apparently, Fox wants more of the same.

The news comes from an interview conducted by ThePlaylist, covering several of the projects being developed by the veteran writer/producer. During the discussion, Landis commented on the various difficulties and artistic disagreements that can bring even the most promising films to a screeching halt.

Take, for instance, his son Max’s Chronicle 2 script being met with resistance from Fox:

“He wrote a sequel, and it’s amazing, and the studio read it and said, ‘We want ‘Chronicle’ again!’ And he said, ‘No, this is the sequel, it’s the evolution, and they said ‘No, we want that movie again!’ So it’s difficult, we’re dealing with a difficult business.”

That admission is going to disappoint plenty of fans, and we don’t just mean of Chronicle or the found footage genre. It’s not a bad thing that Fox wants to repeat the surprise of the original film, as the super-power-infused coming of age story was artfully handled by both Landis and director Josh Trank. But hearing that the proposed script is actually attempting to evolve the story beyond a simple origin, and perhaps delve into the ‘alien’ technology, was exactly what many had hoped for in a sequel.

Besides being disappointing from a story standpoint, this news seems to make the odds of Trank returning even less likely. With a job helming the Fantastic Four reboot and the task of developing Shadow of the Colossus for Sony taking his time, Trank himself had expressed concerns that a Chronicle sequel might have to struggle to avoid being a rehash. His desire to focus on more original properties might have made an evolved sequel a possibility, but not a trip down the same path.

Of course, that’s assuming Landis cooperates. The screenwriter has plenty of buzz backed up by an uncanny ability to have story pitches optioned, so this situation could play out any number of ways. We’ll keep you updated if Fox provides a response.

What do you think of Fox’s decision, assuming Jon Landis’ comments were accurate? Could there be a chance to see the superhero-evolution film we’ve been hoping for, or is Chronicle 2 bound to follow the Paranormal Activity route?

  1. Maybe a direct sequel isn’t the best idea. Another group of teens/adults gaining powers could be interrsting. Either way Fox are some ***holes for not telling before he took however weeks/months to write said script, that they didnt want a direct sequel.

  2. Maybe they could do a story about a different group and whomever survives can team up for a third to find out just what the hell is going on. Loved the first one.

  3. If they want it to properly take off, they’ll need to expand on the story. The brilliant thing about Chronicle is that they explained things well and left enough mystery to make the whole thing believable. Fox needs to make a decision on which audiences they’re going to cater to, the fans of the movie, or the fans of the genre. The fans of the movie would obviously be disappointed by a rehash or another movie like Chronicle but with the title of “Chronicle 2″, and give the fans of the genre more of the same and they’ll simply get bored too. The only logical course of action is to give Landis some creative license (within reason) and let him write a proper sequel.

    • If they just go for more genre movies with no expansion whatsoever then I beleive we start to fall into a little group I beleive many would now refer to as the Paranormal Activity effect. Like falling into the Twilight Zone…

    • Chronicle deserves 1 if not 2 Seaquals to the intense plot. So much happens in the first one that there is way too much room for another movie not to make one. It wouldn’t follow the paranormal activity route although it wouldn’t be a bad Idea to intertwine a seaqual with unseen knowledge and footage from the original chronicle. It has so much potential to even blow the first chronicle out of the water. I think that there should be at least three returning characters consisting of Matt, Casey, and Andrew’s father maybe for closure or even elaboration on the plot for the seaqual. There are so many possibilities that the overall outcomes are endless. Matt could be a fugitive trying to locate the crystal anomoly that gave home his powers. There can be a huge involvement in the government. Matt could come back for Casey. He could be having withdraws from his powers because of his past. He could seek the monks for guidance. Andrew can somehow be resurrected from his uncanny abilities in a government facility.

      • Dude…. YOU HAVE SUCH GREAT IDEAS! I like the one where matt wants to find out wha exactly happened! I could see that definitly happening. You need to help write the script haha

      • I love your ideas! I wish Andrew would be resurrected. However, I think it wold be difficult to please an audience with a sequel.

    • I absolutely agree. Expand on the story line, don’t split off onto some irrelevant and unimportant alternate story line. Also, don’t do as the Hangover movies did, and simply change the location and have almost literally the same story line. I would ignore Fox, and be assertive. Fox needs to Evolve anyways… heheheh… evolve…

I just think that the movie is absolutely phenomenal and I think about what can happen next just about everyday. I just wanted to throw some things out there and I can’t wait to see what you guys come up with. Keep up the great work.

  5. This is what happens when non creative business executives are in charge. All they see is numbers, they can’t see creative integrity. If it sold the first time, why change it? what they don’t get is that stories are not a pair of old comfortable shoes you keep wearing over and over.

  6. The whole original movie was basically an evolution story…they were exploring what they could do with their powers, discovering new and more powerful possibilities. “Evolving” the story from where it left off IS more of the same!

You dont make Batman Begins, and then follow it up with Batman Begins Again. Develop the story from where it left off…it will have the same appeal, the same feel as the original without being, essentially, a remake or reboot of the same movie that just came out this year.

What was the object? Where did it come from? Were there others? Are there others that it granted powers to that we dont know about? I’m thinking maybe your traditional secret government project, super-soldier trope, except Matt’s powers developed much faster/stronger because he’s a teenager (and thus already developing, physically) than the adult super-soldiers. That makes Matt a wanted man, because they cant control him, but he’s also too strong for them to capture or stop. He has to keep one step ahead, figuring out new ways to use his powers to hide and escape and eventually shut the program down to save himself. Maybe he discovers another young person who also got powers, who escapes with him. There’s your movie right there.

    • Bravo my friend! I couldn’t have said it better!

  7. I agree with everybody.. It would be phenomenal if they just continue with the story.. I mean I wouldn’t exactly complain if they did try to make a sequel with another group.. But I want to see the progress with Matt.. How he is dealing with happened.. What does he have to go against next.. Are Andrew and Steve really dead.. That’s what I wanna know… Progress the story..

  8. I think Fox should shut the **** up and stop hindering the creative process of creative minds. Chronicle is a great movie, and no matter what the sequel is about it should be the film’s creators’ decision, not the studio’s.

  9. Ten bucks says this is over Landis not being able to go down the “found footage route”. Because it wouldn’t be logical. He thought the camera was stupid. But Fox is scared to turn away from that.

  10. I think the ONLY way they could make second movie with a different group of characters is if they all die off except for one, and that one is a bad guy… And right before the credits, you see Matt about to engage him in battle or something… So we have a good guy’s story, then a bad guy’s, then you make a third about their fight… You know over control or chaos… Something like that… I’d rather just see Matt’s story continued but you know… Movie producers these days

    • I think Andrew’s father should be the next bad guy in Chronicle 2 when he gains those powers and an epic fight between Matt vs. Andrew’s Dad.

  11. I’m no screenwriter but I would suggest the following. Matt is off in Europe trying to remain low while the world tries to come to grips with what they saw on TV that night. The CIA is trying to find this guy, and having no luck. Then some girl ends up getting these powers too. Like with the other two, he gains a telepathic link with her. He watches from a distance as she learns how to use them. Eventually she messes up and does something really stupid, drawing attention to herself. He steps in and helps her. He’s getting stronger and stronger, too, so when the CIA moves in to capture her, he’s able to smash their way out. Together they make their way to central Africa where a villager mining gold found another one of these things. I don’t care if he gets powers or not, but the CIA is moving in on them again. The girls powers aren’t strong enough and she’s captured, but matt got away with the crystals. They force him into a trade and they end up escaping but the CIA has the crystals now. I dunno how it should end, but it should be open ended, a third should focus on their attempt to prevent theCIA from weaponizing it.

The problem is, and I think Fox agrees is thatwhat made the first so awesome was the three and their interactions, the way they got on and their learning process. The vibe they gave off. The black guy, whose name I forget is such an awesome actor and makes you want to be part of his clique. That vibe will be really hard to recreate, especially as the settings change and the story really moves forward. The problem is that the obvious plot directions for evolving their story haven’t been laid out at all in the first. The second can’t be a continuation of that plot line at all, it has to go somewhere new. That’s exciting for fans, scary for a big company. I think the addition of a girl getting powers allows some of that magic to be recreated and offers Matt a love interest. I’d kind of like to see the other two present as thought-ghosts a la Harry Morgan in Dexter, but they weren’t in the first one and there was plenty of time after both of their deaths to have developed. Could still be done, I suppose.

    • So you wanna see the movie “Jumper” again? Besides a couple of differences thats almost exactly the same plot.

  12. The next one should have more boobs..

  13. why make a reboot? People were divstated when they made a spiderman reboot. yeah, the reboot was great but it wasnt the same as the others. they are trying to do the same like with the hulk. the first was great, the second came out, people thought it was the squal, wrong, it was ok, then the avangers came out, poeple thbought the same guy was going to play the hulk, not ture… they have changed the hulk 3 times already in one decade…. NOT COOL.
They better not do the same with Chronicle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. oh yeah if Matt finds the chrystal he should go to the graves of his friends and b ablto bring them back to life

  15. Need to link up with handcock. Maybe put will smith in it.

  16. How disappointing of Fox. A re-hash would be a waste of time for the writer and viewers; surely Fox are capable of realising that to keep the obviously very talented writer motivated they must let him take this story forward? Without genuine motivation, the writing will be second rate.

Take a look at the most successful TV series of late. Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad (to name a few)… All have evolving story lines, and hence keep the stories fresh.

Come on Fox, embrace the creativity of this man!

  17. I hate corporate policy. Stick to you guns Max!!

  18. I hope there is a sequel. repeating the same movie isn’t going to get that much of an attention. I pictured the part 2 focusing on another group. They too discovered the alien crystal and have been living it out in the midst of south america hiding from the government. They learn that they are not the only ones with this kind of power. Having to see the news on what happened in seatle, they try to uncover the truth. Eventually they meet up wit Matt and try to understand these powers. from there thy could so soo much, giving a big twist at the end and who knows, this could be a trilogy. I just really love the plot line for this movie, hope they make part 2 happen.

  19. The idea of “another chronicle #1″ is a derailment of what fans were left expecting when the music blared during the credits. The fast-paced flow of important events near the end left me shocked by the real way it was paced. One second, Andrew is putting on a firefighter suit, and the next I am scared for my life while being flung through the city of Seattle. The city fight scene was the fastest, but all the resolutions were put in it. As a fan of the movie, when it ended, I immediatley wanted to unravel the things I didnt have answered, like the origin, what comes next, and why it would come next. A desire for a direct sequel. Not anything else, I simply wanted those questions answered, not FOX throwing me more questions that I ultimatley dont care about. A direct sequel for fans of the movie and a decent amount of catering to the general audience is possible. I just want Chronicle completed.

  20. I think they should do both It’d be amazing to re-live the story from a different point of view but then again we all want to hear the “answers” Matt said he was gonna find.

    • Yeah, maybe while Matt is searching for those powers, Richard (Andrew’s dad) gains those powers and uses it for evil even when he’s drunk. Matt watches footage of Andrew and how his dad lied to him, beat him and let his mom die. Matt then realizes that Richard was lying to Andrew the whole time. Richard then threatens Matt to get rid of the footage or he kills Casey. Matt refuse, Richards kills Casey by dropping her from the hospital building and then Matt starts to fight Richard. (to be continued)

  21. I believe i can create the solution for both Fox,
    The writer, and the Fans.

  22. I love the chronicle 1 and I think they srue make a #2 to it because chronicle 1 have alot of details to it and it was the bast movie to watch when you need it action please make a new chronicle 2 please

  23. It would be nice if a story was created about Matt when he fulfills Andrews dream for answers from the Hindu’s. How Matt gains more power than Andrew and uses it for the good… Kinda like Superman! :)

  24. I don’t want fox to change this.

  25. I don’t want fox to change this, i want to see their powers evolve!

  26. Um I think chronicle 2 should obviously be about the survivor from the first movie traveling the world looking for answers. Possible running into others like himself and (lord forbid) andrew. If there was any way to bring andrew back and have it make sense, Id be down for it.

  27. if they made another one, that was literally just another bunch of people getting powers, i would definitely not go see it. Fox need to realize that it will not work at all. The story does need to progress and maybe give some answers, not just go and do a paranormal activity and make basically the same film three times.

  28. So much you can do with this movie, the rock’s origin, the journey following the guy left and also didnt that cop say the ground is unstable? So other people could have gotten in contact with it…fyi just saw this movie 2 hrs ago”cool”

  29. I think Chronicle 2 should be when Richard Dettmer (Andrew’s alcoholic dad) finds the meteor that gave Andrew and the others the powers, gains the powers, and starts using it to kill everyone that loved Andrew while being drunk. That would be when Matt is Casey and warns that Richard is after him. Finally at one point Matt finds out the truth that really was always assaulting Andrew cause of the alcohol and realize that he should have let him die. At the last Matt defeats Richard and injures him. Matt was going to kill him until his mom and Casey tells him not to kill him and let the cops arrest Richard where he’ll end up in prison for 4 years with no bail and no parole.

Comment and let me know what you think
