spider man 3d reboot villain christoph waltz Christoph Waltz Wanted As Spider Man Reboot Villain [Updated]

[Update: Reports are in that Waltz is NOT being sought for this role.]

Remember when Sam Raimi was arguing with Sony about whether or not John Malkovich’s Vulture character was the right villain to battle Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 4? Those were the days. It resulted in the film being canned and the entire cast being exiled, leading to a lower-budget 3D reboot to be directed by up-and-comer Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer).

Not long ago, it was finally confirmed that Andrew Garfield was selected as the underpaid new face of the franchise but no other members of the cast have yet to be announced. That may change soon with reports that Oscar-winning actor Christoph Waltz is in talks to play the Spider-Man’s next villain.

The latest rumor comes from The Playlist who heard from a source that Christoph Waltz, made famous for his epic performance in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, is being sought out by Sony to play the feature villain in the 3D Spider-Man reboot. The news surfaces now upon the item being mentioned in this week’s Production Weekly so it’s now just a question of whether or not Waltz wants to play another villain after his role in the The Green Hornet and before he plays one in The Three Musketeers.

Michael Fassbender was previously the top candidate to play the villain but he opted to play Magneto for Bryan Singer and Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, a much better choice in my opinion.

Update: SuperHeroHype claims to have spoken to “sources close to the production” who say this Christoph Waltz/Spidey reboot talk is pure rumor. That source also assures fans that when a villain is chosen, the role will be filled by ‘a great actor.’ Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

As to which Spider-Man villain may be featured in the reboot, the rumors still point towards The Lizard finally being utilized. If that turns out to be true and Waltz or whoever signs on gets to play Dr. Curt Connors, I feel bad for Dylan Baker who played the character in Sam Raimi’s movies but never had the chance to turn reptile against Spidey.

Is Waltz the right choice to play yet another villain?

The Spider-Man reboot is set to hit theaters July 12, 2012.

  1. He was great as the villain in Inglorious Bastards!

  2. he sure looks like Magneto, but I guess he kinda looks like Dr Connors

  3. Dr. Conners or a younger Silvermane? Maybe.

  4. Hope he doesn’t get typecasted as a villain

  5. Hey, why not get either David Blaine or Criss Angel to do Mysterio….Ok Ok so neither of them look the part but still the real world tie in would be cool.

    • I.. I d-don’t know what to.. I don’t know what to say..

  6. I thought Dylan Baker was the perfect Curt Connors and wish they would have done more with that character.

    • Agreed!

  7. if i had to choose: Silvermane

but i really wanna see him in something other than a villian. he has done alot of european films; most of which i have never seen (any of them actually) so all i have to go on is “Inglorious Basterds” and the upcoming Green Hornet movie.

he was perfect in Basterds but now i wanna see what kinda range he could do

  8. J. Jonah Jameson?

    • Bad guy, just not a “Bad Guy”. Now either Lizard, Vulture, or maybe Norman Osborne as a human before his giant transformation into the more insane and more powerful Green Goblin (MoCap suit for appearance of GG).

  9. I hate this whole reboot..
Dylan Baker SHOULD have the opportunity to play The Lizard. He was perfect as Dr. Connor. As for Jonah Jameson, I can not see anyone else other than J.K. Simmons..

It’s going to be very hard to sit down and watch this reboot with new actors in it. As I really enjoyed the other Spider-Man movies. (Spider-Man 3 not as much, but I didn’t hate it as much as many other people.. Just really hated the whole “emo” thing).

As for Christoph Waltz being a villain. Sounds great to me! He is a great bad guy. Just wish I could have seen John Malcovich as the Vulture!!!!

    • Yes to the J.K. Simmons comment, No to the John Malcovich comment.

The idea of Malcovich flying around in a bird costume turns my stomach more than making me excited.

I think a reboot is a good chance to reinvision the franchise but I will REALLY miss Simmons as JJJ because he really was perfect.

As for Dylan Baker…meh, he was ok but not really in it much for me to form a solid opinion on him. He wasn’t going to get to play the Lizard in Spider-Man 4 anyways so I’m not shedding very many tears over him.

      • I agree. Raimi wasn’t going to do anything great with Spider Man 4 anyway.

  10. Hey it makes sense from a Sony point of view He’s popular right now I see people throwing his name everywhere and this is from fans not the big wigs.
Just a popular name to add to………The SONY SPIDER! god I cant wait to ignore this movie.

  11. If there’s something to it, I think he’ll say thanks but no thanks.

I don’t see him as Curt Connors/The Lizard.
    Spencer Smythe…maybe.

    Clifton Shallot YES!
    (Shallot was the “third Vulture)

    André Gerard the Cyclone…?

    • Wow! You’re right he really does look like Spencer Smythe, now I can’t stop seeing that.

  12. NO single casting choice in this “reboot” will ever get my @$$ in a theater seat to watch it…As far as I’m concerned they will not top SPiderman 2 no matter how they try so I’ve pretty much already seen the best SPidey film I will ever see..

  13. maybe doc ock?even though he is a bit small, but he would have the accent

  14. Please god let this be true!!! I prayed that he would play either Red Skull or Norman Osbourne in a superhero movie after seeing “Basterds” and now that wish may come true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. He could pass as Kraven if they give him the facial hair. He could also be an ok Mysterio. But the Lizard seems more likely I guess.

  16. 1) Gwen Stacey should be the love interest in this, first of no doubt, part of a trilogy of films
    2) Peter should be in his senior year of high school or first years of college. Sorry Mr.Garfield, I can’t believe that you would be in high school.
    3) Spider-Man needs to make with the wisecracks during battles.
    4) Mechanical webshooters…make it make sense to the audience. It was believable on paper, why not film? This IS a reboot after all.
    5) Only one villian PLEASE!! At least for this one. And please no Carnage or Venom. I’m all for the Lizard but a part of me has trouble seeing that working out. I wouldn’t be surprised that this gritty reboot steeped in realism involved a plot with the crime syndicates in New York going head to head for control of the city with Spidey and some throw away oneshot “freak of the week” type villian in the middle. All the while fleshing out the character of someone else preparing them their inevitable turn as a villian.( Norman Osborn)
    6) Get Danny Elfman back for the musical score. I know it’s a reboot but his composing was great in the first two films. His absence in the third was felt. If no Danny, see what Hans Zimmer is doing.
    7) Don’t start with the origin. I think we all know what happens. Bit by a spider blah blah. Uncle Ben dies yakety schmakety. Power and responsibilty so on and so forth. Do a flashback or an opening credits montage.
    8) Introduce supporting characters we’ve yet to see. Peter had a lot more friends other than Harry, Gwen and MJ. Debra Whitman, Liz Allen, Randy Robertson, etc.

I’m a huge fan of Spidey and with the exception of the too-soon-to-be-cancelled Spectacular Spider-Man toon, the better part of the decade has been dissappointing and unsatisfying when it comes to all things in Spidey media. The fans, those who are still around, want Spidey done right. I understand that there could be different interpretations of a character. Look at 90′s movie Batman vs this decade’s Batman. Spider-Man’s fans deserve better. I know some of out there have given up on the webslinger and claim that this reboot isn’t for you. Don’t be so hasty. They just might turn this thing around.

    • Your reply to this post is evidence to why movie studios don’t think fans know anything. Sick of reading peoples wet dreams for the “ultimate” casting of a comic book movie. Surprised you didn’t tell us what villain you expect to see in Batman 3.

  17. he’s going to play the vulture…its pretty obvious or better yet the chameleon..the guy isn’t that big to play a heavy bad guy..kraven?? riiight..silvermane, ehh..

    • I don’t think that’s obvious at all.

It was vulture that made Sony cancel Spidey 4 and reboot… so it might just be the opposite of obvious, lol ;p

      • I don’t think it was the Vulture..that was the public face of the reason for rebooting..I think Sony didn’t want another 250+ million production budget and then another 100 million or so for prints and advertising

They save 50 million likely for returning actors/directors, plus slash the budget for effects and have CONTROL of a new young director who doesn’t want to disappoint a big studio with his first big budget flick..

It was all about money IMO like everything else in Hollywood..

  18. Dylan Baker was the best Curt Connors. I had hoped they would have brought him back.

  19. From the picture above, He does look alittle like a young Magneto who he’d be might be good for the role in X-men First Class. Maybe even look good to play Henry Gyrich if they reboot X-Men franchise. As for spidey villain, im not sure and don’t really care cause i doubt i’ll be seeing the Spidey reboot. If i do see it, it will be on dvd from one of the Red Boxes for $ 1.00

  20. Hey Ren its SONY making the movie most of what you didnt like about the good spidey movies was because of SONY pushing Sam Rami. Now SONY has a no name director I wonder how much he will fight SONY about Spidey, not much so be prepared for the SONY SPIDER!

  21. I do Blame Sony more than Raimi, always did. Sure there were things in Spider-man 3 i didnt like, but thought it was a ok sequel overall. And i was all for Spider-man 4, more so than this reboot with Petey being back in high school again etc. While i interested in seeing the Lizard in a Spidey 4, I was just as much interested in seeing how the Vulture would be treated. Since Raimi used up the best Villains in Spidey’s rogue gallery, Sony might aswell just went with Spidey 4,5,6. But i guess they wanted to be cheap. Oh well, I still have Avengers, Batman 3, and other good movies to see besides this.

    • Are you kidding me?? He used the best rogues in his gallery?!! They have tons of awesome villians left. They just need the proper story.Shocker,Mysterio,Kraven,Rhino,Hobgoblin,Carnage, hell Venom could have a round two(even though it wont happpen anytime soon).

It all depends on the story and if they write it correctly.Hell I didnt even mention The Scorpion or possibly using Morbius.Im just happy they actually have him back in high school. Its alot they can do with his as a teen that wasnt tackled in the first trilogy.

      • Im refering to they used up Spider’s Arch-enemies. People complained about Raimi’s idea of using Vulture in the 4th film, Rhino to me would be the worst. Shocker doesnt do anything for me.I know im not fond of Petey being in high school again. Are they tryin to make a live action franchise adaption based off the cartoon Spectacular Spider-Man series? Maybe id see it in theaters if i knew they did somthing different, like Peter makin the artificial web-shooters for his wrists. That was always somthing that caught my eye that liked about the 90′s animated series. But anyways i wish the film the best but ill spending money on other films that year.

  22. This seems like it’s going to be a crappy version of the original movies (excluding the third one, it was crappy already). I have yet to see where it’s going to be different. All they have to do to make a great new spidey franchise is watch the spectacular spider-man and then cast accordingly.

  23. i think he be a great villain ,after all he has the experience.

    • that he does, i thought he was just brilliant in Basterds, he nailed that role, in a chillingly fashion

  24. I wonder about the female parts.. are they gonna cast a blonde to play a redhead again? and then a redhead to play a blonde.. and so on

  25. I think he would make a great villain in Spiderman just would be wasted as the Lizard though. A great actor like that who’s role would partly be shared 50% to CGI character??? An academy award actor? I think he would make a better Kraven, or Chameleon or Vulture or something along those lines. Norman Osborn also. I wouldn’t mind a new version of some of our fav villains. I wouldn’t especially with the new special effects. There needs to be a Kingpin in this film as well.

    • Kingpin is with FOX and the Daredevil Rogues Gallery..
