superman batman movie Chris Nolan Talks Superman Reboot & Batman 3

There has been wildfire reporting about the upcoming DC superhero movies in the last few weeks, with the biggest bit of news being that The Dark Knight team of Chris Nolan, Jonathan Nolan and David Goyer will be bringing us the Superman reboot, which is currently titled The Man of Steel.

While (most) fanboys have been LOVING that news since it broke, people have also been wondering what’s to be done about Batman 3 and how Chris Nolan plans to juggle two superhero properties. Well, Nolan recently broke silence to speak about that very subject (and more), and we have details to share.

SUPERMAN REBOOT

Speaking to LA Times Hero Complex, Chris Nolan talked about the Superman reboot:

“It’s very exciting, we have a fantastic story…And we feel we can do it right. We know the milieu, if you will, we know the genre and how to get it done right…A lot of people have approached Superman in a lot of different ways. I only know the way that has worked for us…Each [film] serves to the internal logic of the story. They have nothing to do with each other.”

Apparently, Nolan’s passion for a Superman project arose from a moment when he and David Goyer were (ironically enough) kicking around ideas for Batman 3:

“[David] basically told me, ‘I have this thought about how you would approach Superman…I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I’ve never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way.”

SUPERMAN BRAINIAC HC Chris Nolan Talks Superman Reboot & Batman 3

Superman vs. Brainiac?

In our own op-ed piece, “How to Reboot Superman” we touched on the narrative gold mine of Superman having his humanity challenged when an extraterrestrial threat (Brainiac?) comes to Earth, insisting that Superman is Kal-El, an alien, and not the human being (Clark Kent) he pretends to be.

So is that the route Nolan and Goyer are going with the story? The rumor mill has been hinting as much…unfortunately Nolan (in his usual fashion) isn’t giving up details. He also wouldn’t confirm the rumor that he is consulting on this Superman reboot as a way instilling DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. with the confidence to let Jonathan Nolan direct the film. And no mention of the rumor that Chris will direct a Justice League movie down the line.  Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

BATMAN 3

From the information provided above, we know that the Nolans and Goyer are kicking around ideas for Batman 3 – but how far along are they? Says Nolan:

“My brother is writing a script for me and we’ll wait to see how it turns out…he’s struggling to put it together into the epic story that you want it to be…Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story…And in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story.”

“Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we’re telling. And it hearkens back to that priority of trying to find the reality in these fantastic stories. That’s what we do.”

So there you have it. Other juicy bits of Superman reboot/Batman 3 info buried in the interview:

  • The Superman reboot is currently looking to get underway around 2012 – likely after Nolan has completed his work on Batman 3.
  • The supporting cast from the first two Batman films will be back for Batman 3.
  • No announcement of what Batman villains they’re playing with, although Nolan promises that Mr. Freeze is out of the question.

So there you have it – Nolan has officially established that he is indeed the “Godfather” of DC movie universe. Call me a brown-noser if you want, but considering that Marvel has many of its prime properties currently in the wrong hands (Sony, Fox), while DC holds all of its properties and has the talents of guys like The Nolans, Goyer and Martin Campbell (Green Lantern) on their side… This next decade of the new millennium could be the one where DC/WB conquers the superhero movie genre. Marvel’s Avengers project suddenly has some serious contenders to clash with…

Oh well, it all works out great for us super hero movie fans!

  1. Nolan to direct or bust!

  2. Holy Nolan Batman!

  3. “Nolan promises that Mr. Freeze is out of the question.”

    Let the chuch say Hallelujah!!!

  4. Thanks for the update Kofi even if you are a pain every now and then :). I've been waiting for Nolan to speak on this for a while.

  5. I'm excited. This is why Nolan should do the Superman reboot and Why i love that he did the Batman series. Because he makes it believable and serious. Love the comment on there not being a “Mr Freeze” thank you Nolan. Keep the formula!

  6. I agree, Freeze would be completely out of place in Nolan's Batman universe.

  7. Yeah, we don't need Mr. Freeze in this universe. I can see Nolan either bringing back the Joker or going with someone other than the Riddler. It sounds like they are having a tough time with the script and I can understand the trouble. It has to be great to be able to match up with the Dark Knight.

  8. Ooo, loving the image at the start of the post.

That aside, I continue to appreciate how engaged and aware Nolan is during interviews. You can really tells he's listening, and I pity the interviewer who'd ask bad questions!

Seems like he'll continue to take a thoughtful and aware approach while overseeing Superman as he does with all his films, and I'm actually rather okay that he views the third Batman film as AN ENDING, not some open-ended situation to be continued willy-nilly. Gives a more fulfilling conclusion to the stories told in the films as a whole.

  10. Nolan on superman pretty much ends the bad luck streak superman has had on the silver screen. This is exciting news, and hopefully they cast an unknown or someone that could really fit the man of steel role.Batman 3 not having Mr.Freeze is good news. What ever villian they bring (Black Mask possibly?) is going to be something they could use in a real world situation.Good time to be a comic fan…

  11. good news…
now, in my own humble opinion.. i believe Arkham Asylum to be a very rich source of material for either franchise to draw from.

    bring 'em

  12. histeachn

I agree. I like the fact that they will end the series instead of trying to milk more money out of it. Anyone else would probably keep the series going so they could do more movies in the future but they want to end it there way and I love that.

  13. And honestly since every director pretty much has a “story arc” film series (3 films) before the studio does an optional reboot or seperate continuity series,it would be brave and amazing if The Nolans would do what Tim Burton and Joel “Bat Nipples” couldnt do…kill Batman in an amazingly written script.

This would not only set the film apart from the “comic book movie” stereotype, but it would set the bar for the kinda writing that the movies deserve.(IMO)

  14. dynamiteman

that's a great thought. you wonder how they will end the series and killing Batman would be extremely bold. If anyone can do it, it's the Nolans. If they pull it off, it would be the first time I ever cry at a superhero film lol.

  15. DC seems to be taking over with Green Lantern, The Flash, the Superman reboot and Batman owning the comicbook movies. Marvel still has not got back the rights to Spiderman, Wolverine or XMen and is having real trouble with Captain America right now. Of course, Iron Man is the bomb and the Incredible Hulk reboot was awesome but they have nothing going for them right now. Thor could change everything but then Captain America could bring Marvel right back down. I hope they all do well though.

  16. Marvel has nothing going for them?? They couldn't be more on top of their game!! They are trendsetters in this industry. What has DC done in the last 10 years? Aside from Nolan's Batman (which is hardly a superhero movie and more of glorified sherlocke holmes/jason bourne) they haven't done squat. Marvel is making movie history intertwining 5 great movies which lead to their team-up movie in the Avengers which is the most highly anticipated movie for this genre. They also have Ant-Man, Iron Fist, Black Panther, and Luke Cage on the horizon. DC has tried for years to get Wonder Woman off the ground. Smallville has just gotten silly. Superman Returns was awful. They tried to even put a crappy Justice League movie together (without Bale and Routh) after seeing the X-Men movies and learning of Marvel's plan for the Avengers…DC has been lost. Green Lantern seems to have some potential although adding Kilowogg and that chicken character raises some doubts. The Flash is getting a writer, but he's truly not that interesting of a character. Nolan is overseeing Man of Steel, but let's face it, Nolan's style is NOT conducive to a team-up movie. Hard to imagine Batman existing in a world outside of Gotham or standing next to anyone who has actual superpowers. Nolan already said Superman will be the only hero in his world in Man of Steel. So, we're not getting a Justice League movie anytime in the foreseeable future. And, Nolan, please address and fix the whole Clark Kent eyeglasses disguise in the reboot!! Again, Marvel is on top of their game and Disney's financial backing is only going to reinforce that fact. Even the non-Marvel owned movie properties are shelling out movies left and right (X-Men franchise, Spiderman franchise, Blade franchise, etc.). There may have been some misses amongst that group, but at least their characters are being put out there. Part of Marvel's genius was to sell the movie rights to Fox and Sony back in the day just to get movie made…they'll eventually get the rights back.

  17. I hope Nolan can deliever a Superman film, knowing that Supes is from the other side of the same coin. I loved the first two Superman films, but the rest didnt live it up to those. I respect Singer for trying to pick up after the first two films but thought he took it the wrong direction and looked like he was trying to redo what Donnor already did. Whatever Nolan has in mind, i hope he doesnt make Superman dark cause this aint Batman we're be watchin. As for villains, Brianiac is ok but i dont want see him with Lex Luthor again. My first pick would be Darkseid since he was always my favorite and could be a physical threat trading punches etc. Him and his son Kalibak or steppenwolf, and they wouldnt need to have the whole New Gods characters in, Maybe just Orion make a small cameo or appearance who warns about Darkseid's plans. As for Batman 3, i hope we see a villain we havnt seen before on screen yet as in previous films. villains like Black Mask, Firefly, Maybe redo Bane the right way this time as a villain with brains and brawn against Batman. Who brought up Mr. Freeze? On final note, i wouldnt go as far to say it will be the final batman film, maybe for the Nolans but not for WB.

  18. I shouldn't have said that. I exaggerated when i got excited. Sorry.

  19. Invigorating to know that they're actually making a comeback with Sups and Bats.

Especially when Nolan is part of most of the action for both movies

  20. no need to apologize…i was just trying to see what kind of reaction i would get with that response…surprised no one's mad yet.

  21. I thought the Nolan-Superman connection was dismissed as a rumor from a WB person. I guess I missed the update on that. So is he directing? How did I miss this when I read screen rant every day? Haha.
And is Nolan confirmed as director for Batman 3? Did I miss that announcement too? I sure hope he is directing. I can't imagine Batman 3 any other way.

  23. I really hope he finds a way to get the two of them onscreen together. I like how the Batman series is more grounded in reality than your average comic book movie, and I certainly wouldn't want to see Supes or any of the less realistic bad guys make their way into Batman 3, but after that movie comes out and the trilogy is finished, I see no reason why they can't open up the franchise some and let the two of them team up.

One of my favorite aspects of Batman that has been missing from the franchise so far is his paranoia when it comes to super-powered heroes. He's got a contingency plan for each and every one of the JLA members in case they went rogue, including Supes, and I'd like to see that make it into a film.

  24. Yeah, i am glad that Mr. Freeze won't be in this one. If he is ever in any bat flick, i say save him for the very very very last bat movie.

  25. I am glad that the Nolan boys and Goyer are doing the next Superman flick. These guys did a stellar job with the Dark Knight. The movie was aimed at the adult fans, given a serious attitude, and as a result…the top grossing film (in billions) of all time for many months. Hopefully, they do the same with Superman.

  26. I'm confused! Will he or will he not be involved in the Superman Reboot?

And why does it seem difficult for WB to make a Good Superman Movie since 2006? It's that not difficult!

  27. I agree. I, for one, am looking for Clay-face or maybe Killer Croc to be in the next Bat Flick. However, given their track record with having villains in Bat's movies, i do wonder if they choose to stay away from vilains with powers? Hmmm, could that be a reason as to why they chose not to have Mr. Freeze?… because it would require special effects? I think i see their formula…just keep the movie simple, which means cutting out the special effects, and therefore lowers the cost to make the movie, but increases the ticket-sales revenue because of a well-written story/plot (as was the case with the Dark Knight).

Not Bad, but if I am right, I still want Clay-Face or Killer Croc.

  28. Yeah your right definitely something Sony or Fox would try to force him to do.

  29. Oh, yeah!!! great point JRose!! After all Batman IS a Detective/Ninja and that is the way they think. He's got it all planned out…..just in case. The tech stuff is great but this next Batman movie should tend to lead into something a little more sci-fi based.
