Rumor Patrol is still on the case of these DC/Warner Bros. movies!
My fingers are getting worn out from typing (updating and re-updating) every new rumor that pops up on the DC movie front. I started the week innocently writing about how the Superman reboot should be done – and lo and behold this whole deal about The Dark Knight team – David Goyer, Chris and Jonathan Nolan - handling the Superman reboot hits the fan!
While the facts about Man of Steel were still being sorted out, another rumor drops that DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. are eyeing a director for The Flash! Remember when it was all so simple a month ago? Batman 3 and Green Lantern were the only two DC Comics movies we had to worry about – now a whole DC movie universe seems to be springing up around us…
Our friends over at IESB have plotted the course of this new DC Universe and may have charted its final destination: that long-stalled Justice League movie that so many people would love to see. But who would helm such a monster project? Why, Chris Nolan of course!
And if the Nolan/DC dynasty wasn’t big enough already, add to the rumor pile this claim that Chris Nolan is consulting on the Superman reboot primarily because his oversight will make DCE/WB feel more comfortable about putting his brother (Batman Begins and Dark Knight co-writer) Jonathan Nolan in the director’s chair of Man of Steel. Jonathan Nolan has collaborated with this brother on just about every project with Chris’ name on it (co-writing a lot of it), so you know that skill is there.

Now, IESB is real quick to point out that this Nolan/Justice League rumor is but one of many that our old buddy, former Screen Rant writer Jamie Williams, is hearing as of late. Jamie wisely states that while he might hear a lot of things, he can’t (and shouldn’t) go running around spouting every one. That would be so second grade.
So why is this particular rumor coming at us now? Well, in a week where the improbable has become the likely, no rumor is really too crazy – especially one that involves DCE/WB tucking more and more of their cinematic universe safely under the wing of people like Goyer and the Nolans – the same guys who have brought big $miles to both comic book movie suits and fans alike over the last few years.

Do I really have to say it? Of course it would be awesome to have Chris Nolan directing Justice League – but that happening entails a lot of good fortune (no pun) including Nolan himself being able to navigate the politics and headaches of getting both Batman 3 and Man of Steel up on the big screen, without tiring of the genre or wanting to take a departure to vent some creative juice on his own projects, such as this summer’s Inception (because this guy does like to be fresh and original, remember).
Not saying it can or even won’t happen, just saying we all better say a prayer to the fanboy gods that it does!

“Some rum for you, Joboo…”

awesome as it would be, I dont think Chris Nolan is going to direct Justice League. Having Batman and possibly Superman under his enough, so I doubt hed want to take on a project where he would have to include seven too eight main characters and make them all relevent to the plot.
ojex and im here to prove you wrong did u know jona nolan did a foreward to a dc graphic novel superman /Batman the search for kryptonite and hes a HUGE supes fan!lol heres the proof! This is from the Superman/Batman: The Search for Kryptonite graphic novel, which is one of the more fun and enjoyable Superman/Batman stories that I have read, I would recommend picking it up if you like stories about the 2 big guns teaming up. This convinces me that, if any of the rumors are true, Jonah Nolan would do a awesome job if he was handed control of the Man of Steel.
“They're strange drinking pals, these two. Neither of them drinks, first off: Superman because he's too decent, and Batman because, welll —- would a sledgehammer drink? Other than that, they have almost nothing in common. One of them is a god: the other is just a seriously angry mortal. One of them pretends to be a farm boy; the other pretends to be a wealthy bachelor. They're born heroes, but one of them dresses the part and the other dresses, to be honest, like a villian.
Full disclosure: I'm a little biased. I get a paycheck working for one of these guys, and it's not the Boy Scout. (I'm going to take Michael Green at his word with that Lance, the bottle-blond Batman, is no dig at any film set I've ever worked on.)
My preference aside, it's good to see these guys palling around together. Frankly, if they weren't friends with each other, I'm not sure either of them would have friends. Besides, they complement each other nicely, the idealist and the pragmatist — the national mascot and the vigilante.
Who else could the Man of Steel turn to for help ridding the earth of the only substance that can harm him? And who else would help him, even knowing, as Bats surely does, that it's an impossible task?
Impossible? Well, even if someone else wasn't hoarding kryptonite — no, I'm not spoiling it, and so you'll have to keep reading — there's always that one last nugget, sealed in a lead box, buried under a desk at DC Comics.
The ultimate betrayal? Sorry, Superman. But how the hell is anyone supposed to write stories about a guy without a single solitary weakness?
Now that the Man of Tomorrow has any right to complain — he's in expert hands here. Artist Shane Dvis could give you a concussion with that pencil of his. I recommend borrowing a car to read the sequence where Superman gets punted through a corn elevator — you're going to need the seatbelt. Michael Green and Mike Johnson know both of these heroes to a T. Want proof? Skip to the moment that Superman, still recovering from getting worked over, complains that no one ever seems to get the drop on Batman. Or skip to the last panel. Or just take my word for it.
World's finest? Damn straight. My only regret? We don't get a chance to see these guys tussle with each other a bit.
But I guess we all know who'd win that one.
–Jonah Nolan July 2008″
“My responsibility is to do what's right.” Clark Kent
I find this unlikely as Nolan has reportedly needed a lot of convincing just to to get him to do a 3rd Batman film.
I love this line. “That would be so second grade.” Haha! Good stuff, Kofi.
youve made your point but I still have my doubts about Chris Nolan directing Justice League. Not saying he wont be involved in the project (should they use his universes batman) but I seriously doubt he will direct. maybe Jonah, but I cant really tell as Im not to familiar with his work (other than him being involved in the Nolan batman franchise)
his brother is a Huge Superman & justice leauge fan thats Convincing Enough!lol
I hope this happens! I've been saying Nolan should be in charge of all DC-related films, and it looks like he may be soon!!
Let's see…
Shall we take all of this Superman talk just a bit further.
Is it safe to assume that at the end of “The Dark Knight” Batman becomes a hunted man?
Oookkkkaaayyyyy….
Who would YOU go to to hunt down a person of Batman's caliper???
(hint: he wears a red cape.)
Wouldn't THAT make for some great Batman 3 news.
And possibly tie into a great new Superman movie.
Cheers…
I think I smell a three picture deal cooking let's hope it doesn't burn…
Chris directing Justice League is a pipe dream if I've ever heard one, but I think there's definitely some credibility to the Jonah-directing-Supes rumor.
rocket that would be awesome!
You stole that from me Andrew, or should I call you ZodsBitchisBack? It's TheBlur214, you even used my signature at the end it lol!
hey i didnt say it was mine.lol i like ya blur!
Sounds like Chris Nolan is the un-official King of Warner Brothers. If the only way to keep C. Nolan committed to the Batman franchise for at least another film was to promise his Syncopy company first-dibs on any movie in development, then its worth the massive gamble. If the story turns out true, WB and DC are banking that Nolan won't have a misstep.
reputation management
Hold on here. He wrote a foreword… so he's a fanboy like Goyer. That doesn't prove anything. Dark Knight had way too many plot holes in it. It makes it unwatchable again. Only redeeming thing in that film was Heath Ledger's performance.
So J Nolan's first film may be a big budget Superman film because his brother is a successful director??? Sorry those credentials don't cut it with me. There are other directors out there that have paid their dues more deserving.
Has Jonathan Nolan even directed a real film?
Kevin Smith is a huge comic book fan, that doesn't mean the execs are going to give him the job. I don't see studio execs putting all their faith, for their top franchise, in a director with no experience no matter how much writing cred he has or who his brother is. Also, Chris Nolan liked the realism in his Batman movies, and I don't see how he could transform that universe into the Justice League one with a flying alien, a super speedy man, and all that comes with the League. I just don't see this happening and I chalk this up to being just another Hollywood rumor.
Wouldn't they still need to do a few more solo films before filming a Justice League film? We got Green Lantern coming, The Flash on the way. Wonder Woman should have her own solo film and they need to get one heck of a director to make a Aquaman film or atleast make a Green Arrow solo film in his place since he's one of the core members and maybe just save Aquaman & Martian Manhunter for the justice league film. After seeing Smallville's Absolute Justice episode, id like to see a Hawkman solo movie aswell. Im doubtful Chris Nolan will helm a justice league film, WB should look into all thier choices of directors best to pull off a project like that off. Would he even use Christian Bale in a team-up film? I recall both Nolan & Bale want their batman franchise to be a real world thing, and not have Nolan's Batman connected to other DC heroes, or even have Dick Grayson in the franchise. Anyways, whoever directs the Justice League film, i hope it has one heck of a plot with pretty bad baddies. I didnt care for the original idea for the film with Maxwell Lord ,Talia Al' Ghoul and the OMACS as villains. And i dont care if they have to make it 3 hrs long, make it great so sequels can follow. Oh, just a suggestion i have on who WB could have to direct the film, Id like Bruce Timm & co. work on the script knowing they brought a great Justice League animated series from beginning to end of its run.
Alright, I loved Nolan's Batman movies as much as the next guy. Batman Begins was really good, and The Dark Knight was amazing, but the films are not really the shining examples of realism that everyone makes them out to be. Yes, they're dark and gritty and filled with corruption and real human flaws, but when it comes right down to it, the movies still revolve around a man dressed like a bat going around and beating up criminals, always managing to be in the exact right place at the exact right time, and never getting seriously injured while managing to out-wit the entire city police force. Give all of the DC movies psychological darkness, heroes facing real human problems, and villains that are either morally gray or really evil, and they'll all be just as realistic as Nolan's Batman movies. In fact, even though their powers are really unrealistic, I think that it's far more realistic that Green Lantern or Superman could do what Batman does just by the fact that they have super-powers.
I still doubt that Nolan would direct the films, though.
I think it would help DC to have one guy to be in charge of quality control. Since DC film rights are not to owned by DC they need someone to watch out for there best interest. So if Nolan becomes the Avi Arad of WB/DC then so be it.
Thx for the update Kofi. I think the Nolans are the only ones who can make this happen the way we want it to turn out.
I'm hearing Marvel and Joe Johnston are having major issues with Captain America and that could potentially destroy The Avengers movie. DC is creeping back up. Marvel better watch out!
I'd rather see Nolan give it a go, based on his success with Batman, than WB giving the project to a director like Ang Lee. If he does do a JLA movie, the folks who are putting face to the superheroes should star in it. When rumors surfaced that a JLA movie might be in the works without Bale and Routh as Batman/Superman, I was a bit disappointed. As far as a Wonder Woman movie goes, I think the Amazon Princess should be played by someone fairly unknown, like Superman was. The rumors of Jolie, Fox, and Beyonce should be flushed. Obviously, Megan Fox would be a goo choice. However, given that she thinks WW is a lame super heroe because she flies around in an invisible jet, tanks her candidacy. She is apparently not familiar with the latest versions of WW, you the one who can fly like Superman. The other two for obvious reasons. Jolie is a wierdo and would ruin the character, like Nic Cage playing the man of steel….And who ever threw Beyonces name into the mix has been blazin too much to realize how idiotic that is……
I think the word conjecture is appropriate here.
The Nolans might be perfect for Batman, but assuming they will do exactly the se for Superman and the JLA is a big leap.

” Up yours Joboo!”
Sounds interesting, all the other movies aside I just hope C. Nolan directs Begins 3. Another great article, thanks Kofi.
These rumors would be great news for the DC Universe, and those of us watching it.
I will bring the bucket of fired chicken for Joboo.
Sam
I don't think everything will be perfect for these guys but it's a step in the right direction.
there are talks about Joe Johnston battling with Marvel over money and wanting to only spend 300k (huge money for me, chump change for actors) on the lead for Capn America is bad news. They better their act together quick. Weren't we already supposed to have a lead actor in place by today for Captain America?
If their is a god please can you make duplicates of the nolan brothers………
