Thor vs Surtur God of Thunder Marvel Game Chris Hemsworth Talks Thor 3 Story & Becoming More Superpowered

In the 2011’s Thor, moviegoers witnessed an arrogant prince take steps towards becoming the heroic God of Thunder, much of his power stemming from the mighty hammer Mjolnir. With it, Thor can leap vast distances, virtually granting him the ability to fly. The square-headed hammer can fly on its own, returning to its user when thrown or summoned, but it can only be used by someone deemed “worthy.” It’s a mystical artifact that according to Marvel Comics and hinted at in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was forged from a dying star.

When Thor returned to Earth and joined The Avengers last summer, we saw him battle without the hammer, having super strength and durability that allowed him to fight the Hulk with his fists. For Thor: The Dark World, his powers are enhanced yet again on the hero’s path to protect Asgard, Earth and the rest of the realms. With even greater threats yet to be introduced however, Thor will have to put those powers to the test if star Chris Hemsworth is right about Thor 3.

Speaking with our own Kofi Outlaw at the press junket for Thor: The Dark World, Chris Hemsworth told us last week that he hasn’t yet read the script for The Avengers: Age of Ultron, but that he does have ideas of where Thor 3 should go.

“I think what’s good about this is that each time, with the Avengers, we sort of made it difficult to separate them each time there’s some sort of conflict it’s like where’s the rest of the team? And I liked that Thor has another universe or the universe to sort of take care of and keep him occupied. I think that in the comic book the sort of end of days, Armageddon aspect is probably the direction in which it will all head in. Where it’s sort of the end of all things and there’s obviously no script or anything when I read the comic books I thought it was an interesting way to go.”

By Armageddon, Hemsworth is referring to Ragnarok, an apocalypse of sorts that represents the end of Asgard. The event plays a major part in Thor comics and while on the set of Thor 2 last fall, executive producer Craig Kyle also teased similar ideas when describing to us the Tree of Yggdrasil housed within the Asgardian Hall of Science which appears in the film.

“And the effects and woes and success of the universe are spoken through this, this living object.  So, should the end of all things ever come this would probably be the first thing to fall.”

With Ragnarok comes one of Thor’s greatest enemies, Surtur, leader of the Fire Demons of Muspelheim. We asked Kyle about the possibility of them showing up and he laughed and danced around the idea, saying only that it’s an important storyline from the comics. As for Hemsworth’s desire to see Fire Demons show up in the next Thor solo movie?

“Yeah (laughs) bring them all in.”

First is was the Frost Giants of Jotunheim, and in Thor: The Dark World, the “Dark World” refers to Svartalfheim – home of Malekith and the Dark Elves. It’s only logical to round out the trilogy with big bad Surtur and his army of Fire Demons. And in the books, there are plenty of ways to tie such a story to the artifacts of the first two films, previously seen characters and another attack on Earth. It’s just a matter of when and how Marvel Studios decides to do so.

As fans will soon find out, Thor puts on an impressive show with his abilities as the God of Thunder in Thor: The Dark World and that’s something very intentional. We learned on on our visit to the set of the film last year that visual effects supervisor Jake Morrison and the production team put a lot of thought into redesigning how Thor can fly and wield the mighty hammer Mjolnir. Hemsworth told us that he and director Alan Taylor wanted to make changes on this front as well.

“It was one of my first concerns at the beginning of the film. I said, ‘look I don’t want him to feel he’s just doing hand to hand combat he’s a God we should see him off the ground more and we should see the power of that weapon and his abilities.’  So that was something we really concentrated on upping the action and the stunts and his skillset, really showcasing what he’s capable of.”

If Thor is to battle the 1000-foot tall Surtur, Marvel Studios and Hemsworth will have to up the ante again for Thor 3 which we expect could be one of Disney’s unannounced 2016 Marvel movies.

  1. This would be amazing. Can’t wait.

  2. I really hope they’re gonna make a Thor 3, because the Thor-franchise is one of my favourites in the MCU. Maybe my absolute favourite to be honest.

    • Same here.

Always hated the comic books (still do) but the first movie was great and the second one looks good too.

      • I agree. I always thought Thor was a lame hero when I read comics back in the day. And yet, the first Thor movie is my favorite of the solo movies and “The Dark World” is my most anticipated movie this year. Guess Marvel is doing their job when they turned me into a bonafide fan.

        • It’s not that I thought he was a lame hero, I just found it pretty boring to read and – like with Captain America books – a real struggle to get through due to how dull they are.

I can’t even use the excuse that it’s because they’re old stories (I really wondered how The Dark Phoenix Saga, Demon In A Bottle and Secret Wars for example became so popular after reading them for the first time in the past year) because even Thor stories from as recent as 2010 just have that dull feeling about them too.

          • I don’t know man, the Marvel NOW Thor: God of Thunder series is pretty cool. Very dark and epic with all the God-Butcher stuff and 3 versions of Thor throughout the timeline.

            • Have to admit, haven’t read any Marvel NOW whatsoever. I’m still catching up with The New 52, Judge Dredd and Tank Girl at the moment.

          • I’m assuming that your collecting the graphic novel collection as all those titles are part of the collection.

The thing with those types of “classic” stories and their popularity is you have to think about the time in which they were published.

At the time they were considered ground breaking, now everyone does it so it’s old hat and that colours the impact if/when your go to the original classic that set the ball rolling.

Same with films. Good example is Alien. When that first came out it was a revelation, no one had seen anything like it.

If it came out today no one would bat an eyelid at the horror and gore.

Take it you weren’t bowled over with Thor: Reborn either

          • Yeah me too it was only until films came out i started liking them that even includes iron man.The only person in avengers i liked before the movies was hulk but actors (Evans,Downey and Hemsworth) all made the roles come too life

        • If you thought he was lame back in the day, take a try at reading those comics now that you’re older. They are classics.

        • Yes, i completely agree with you too. hated thor back in the days of early-1990s comic book reading. and, even when he was briefly seen in cartoons in the 80s/90s he was poorly depicted (so was iron man in the cartoons minus the comic books part though). thor 1 film brought intrigue and feeling to the new franchise and anticipated for them(+loki) to be in the avengers.

      • the thor franchise looks like its going to keep getting better. I hope after avengers 3 and thor 3 we get to see the god of thunder in space as a member of the gog.

      • Now you sound like me: did not like Thor in the comics especially, but am liking him here. I am kind of like that with Arrow, as well: did not like Green Arrow in the comics to any great degree at all, but am enjoying the TV series!

        • Yeah, its weird cause it’s thanks to Arrow that I finally started to like Green Arrow as a character. Got Green Arrow: Year One and was able to mark out when they used China White’s actual name this week during episode 2 of season 2.

    • They are making a Thor 3. Hemsworth remaining contract is for 2 more Avengers and 1 more Thor movie.

  3. Just give us Beta Ray Bill already!!

    • Seriously!!! If Thor 3 does not have Beta Ray Bill I will be disappointed.
I mean it could totally work.
First Thor runs into Beta Ray Bill who defeats him like he did in the comics, then the whole story of the Korbinites intertwine with the ongoing threat of Surtur and the fire demons, which leads to Beta Ray Bill and Thor fighting side by side to defeat Surtur and his forces.

      • I’d only enjoy it if Bill needed to convince Thor to fight alongside him and Thor had a source of motivation to do it because otherwise, it just seems like adding a character for the hell of it instead of the story needing the addition of that character.

      • BRB looks like Mr. Ed playig dress-up lie Thor…not for me.

    • 1000% agree… I don’t know much of the Thor world but I know about Beta Ray Bill and I am DYING to see him bought to the big screen!! As long as they don’t ruin him! which you know they would probably do, It would be hard to have his iconic Horse Head in the live action movies and have it believable!
But I feel he is a MUST in what could be the last of the Thor solo movies.

      • I don’t think it wouldn’t be believable, with the advances in Computer Generated Imagery in the next 3 years, oh yeah, and Rocket Racoon and Groot + other GOTG characters? THANOS. lol it would TOTALLY work! Get a sick actor, do motion capture, and have the actors likeness to Beta Ray Bill. boom. lol

      • yeah, for some reason, I do NOT see anyone really rebooting any of the Thor films for a while or at all, some reason dont see why they would. I see ‘them’ rebooting iron man for the hell of it, but thats not until cerca 2024.

  4. Just thinking about it now. Thanos could get the Infinity Gauntlet at the end of Avengers 2 (Ultron was enough distraction to allow him to grab the gauntlet and the gems) and him using it could cause universal chaos.

This chaos awakens Surtur and allows him to break free into other worlds with his demons while The Inhumans make their first appearance to help out, not only to help Earth but save their own hides.

SHIELD have Pym working on whatever (The Vision? Maybe as Ant-Man, he has to steal a part of Ultron’s broken body to figure out how to create their own version?) while they also send a team to Wakanda to harvest vibranium to help their defensive and offensive capabilities, combining it with the remnants of Tesseract power they have (thanks to AoS showing a small weapon that uses it)and Black Panther enters the fray to defend his land before being recruited.

Doctor Strange meanwhile uses his movie to figure out his capabilities and is recruited by Stark or Rogers in a button due to his newly acquired knowledge of magic, see if that helps in the defense of Earth from Thanos.

I dunno, thoughts? Just piecing together rumour and coming up with stuff off the top of my head to try and make sense of where they may be heading going into Avengers 3.

  5. After Thor dies in Thor 3: Age of Surtur, they’ll reboot/relaunch the Thor series with Thunderstrike, played by Liam Hemsworth.

    • You know, if Kaiwei Lyman isn’t cast as a “King of Atlantis” style Aquaman, I could see him as The Sentry if they had to replace Thor.

      • Sentry would be cool. As long as they don’t go with Hyperion, that’d make a lot WB executives really angry.

    • Surtur versus team-up: Thor and Smokey The Bear!

      • How about Human Torch versus Iceman?

  6. Thor 2 will easily break the 700 million mark, and probably make more like 800 million, so me thinks a Thor 3 movie is in the future.

    • I’d join in with box office predictions but won’t for a few reasons:

      * I’m afraid to project numbers that are too big because what if it doesn’t make anywhere near that?

      * I hate the idea of box office numbers being a measuring stick for whether or not to make more of the same. Terrible movies with equally terrible sequels made millions while great movies that didn’t get sequels they deserved languished with bad box office numbers.

I’d rather Hollywood looks at global demand courtesy of feedback from viewers on a special data collecting site than looking solely at financial numbers based solely on US audiences (as if the rest of the world doesn’t exist) because that would be much more accurate and fair.

      • I’ll second that but other than the Actors/Directors/Crew (and some of them I’m dubious of) I really don’t think the money men (Producers and the like) behind the projects will ever care what the global audience thought of the film, just how much money it makes at the box office, American primary then globally a second concern.

It makes me laugh when you criticize a film and someone pipes up with “yeah but it made x,y,z at the box office” as if that is how a film’s quality should be measured.

It’s not fair however as were told over and over as children.. life’s not fair!

  7. They should save Beta Ray Bill for after Thor 3/ Avengers 3. I would assume that most of these characters are going to recast after each has its own trilogy plus the Avengers trilogy.
After they defeat Surtur in Thor 3 they banish him to some unknown region of space and find out in number 4 that Surtur has once again risen to power and destroyed the Korbinite home world. He feels responsible, goes to defeat Surtur and meets Bill …

    • They should introduce Beta in Thor, Gladiator and/or Firelord in Guardians or Doc Strange, along with Nova and Warlock, then proceed to make an Annihilators film…

  8. They could go on making Thor and Avengers movies forever… I promise, I will go to watch every single one(As Long as Hemi is in them:D )…
And I want a Loki movie!!!

  9. A Loki movie could actually happen. Next year Marvel is releasing a new series called Loki: Agent of Asgard, so its a possibility.

    • No Loki movie, please…does not do it for me at all (although I like him in the movies so far). Who would he fight: Silver Surfer? (Oops, wrong studio).

      • Yeah, Loki’s portrayal was cool in Thor but too campy in The Avengers. Hiddleston’s a good actor but seriously, the love for Loki and desire from some to see him in his own show and movie and making the studio add more scenes featuring him after filming has already ended just seems pretty ridiculous to me.

I love The Joker but I liked how little we saw of him in TDK. Just enough to be a cool villain but not enough to become overkill and make me tired of constantly seeing him everywhere.

  10. I think Surtur is the best villain to end(?) a Thor trilogy. Add in The Enchantress with the Executioner (they need to come sooner or later), bring back Malekith (if he’s dead), and make Loki (considering he’s become the main charm of the franchise) be the one who resurrect the fire beast… and we’re going to have a real blast. They can even hint Beta Ray Bill due to his connection with Surtur.

    • I’d also like to see Hela…

  11. I can see that in Thor 3, him battling Surtur. They could subtitle it
The Lost Realms and use it to introduce Atlantis (Namor) and
    Olympus (Hercules)
Team the three of them up in a TITANS movie.

    • Well, that would certainly show interesting diversity! Thor, Namor, and Hercules (I almost like it!).

  12. This is what was written “Thor 3′ Story”
This is what I read “Toy Story 3″

  13. I really dont wanna see surtur as a main villian. 1000 ft demon may ne tough but their is nothing intereating or compelling about him. Thanos is easily the most compelling villian outaide loki imo, because his deal with death.

    • Sorry for the bad spelling, answering on the phone is difficul

    • Nothing interesting or compelling? His presence helps usher in Ragnarok. If the end of existence doesn’t do it for ya, I don’t know what will.

    • I agree with Dazz, if Surtur isn’t a good enough villain for you, then you might as well stop watching.
Surtur is a friggin beast! He’s no Thanos, but in the case of a Thor solo film, he’s a must. I just hope that when they do the Ragnarok story line, they do it justice (i.e. no unnecessary twists ;)).

  14. Truthfully I’d rather see Amora first before Surtur! She has a story to tell and I’d love to see cause evil and discord for Thor, Jane Foster and especially The Avenges!!

  15. Thor out of all the Marvel characters has the most interesting material to work off. He has been my favorite since grade school when each day one of the five were on. The rainbow bridge, Asgard all brilliant. My favorite Thor story involved Hercules and his being banished to Earth, the victory that was stolen from Thor and his redemption. That would be a movie :-)

  16. I really like the thor series especially with hottie chris hemsworth but i hope the third film does NOT give off a star trek vibe!!

  17. Thor may have been boring to those with short attention spans, but Thor has always had very complicated storylines. The stories play better in the movies. Thor has always been one of my favorite heros because of the depth of his world.

  18. thor :the dark world is beyond amazing and thor 3 will be better and it will be the best thor trilogy and the fire demon surtur will the be the vilain for thor 3 and also that the Enchantress ,the executioner will also be in thor 3 as well and bring more monster, giant as well as well as more asgardian as well.

  19. Thor 3 will be good.

  20. Maybe he should break his hammer this time like what happened a few times in the comic books. I would love to see Thunderstrike rather than Beta Ray Bill.

  21. All are good.because they have always been one of my favorite heros because of the depth of his world.

  22. I watched’s awesome. I like the hero Chris Thomsworth.really he is a superhero. He deserves the award he got.thank u hero.once again I like u.Mona.

  23. I love your movie. The hero is superhero. Superb. Iwant to meet you, Chris Thomsworth. Plz.plz.Mijan.

  24. I watched’s awesome. I like the hero Chris Hemsworth.really he is a superhero. He deserves the award he got.thank u hero.once again I like u.

  25. u do realize Beta Ray Bill is gonna be played by Sarah Jessica Parker

  26. OK but how you gone tie up when Loki killed his father in Thor dark world

  27. I’d actually like to see this built up like “Lord of the Rings” but over two films not three, The Thor movies have been good / decent but they need their swan song and high quality movie like Iron Man had in the first one and Cap 2 has just done, speaking of which I wish they would go more in the direction of LotR, I also want more Viking / Conan feel and less Xena warrior princess cheesiness, more chain mail and medieval armour and less plastic plate outfits, Thor’s a Warrior and they need to bring that into the movies, Ragnorok and Surtur could be awesome in a Thor film.

  28. A so called ”god” needing the company of a hammer and some living companions. Sure, ”god” of thunder, rather than far advanced and far capable Asgardian alien technology.

”We are not gods. We’re born, we live, we die. Just as humans do.”-Odin

  29. No Asgardian has ever claimed to be a so called ”god”. That’d be insane because they are still mortal, and they have their wrongs, mistakes or faults and imperfections. They have their conflicts and struggles as well. Like humans. And they are not literally capable of anything or literally omniscient. And it was made obvious that an Asgardian can also fall victim to his or her own negative feelings such as anger or jealousy. If they are perfect why does Sif get jealous over Jane Foster?
