Chris Hemsworth Talks ‘Thor 3′ Story & Becoming More Superpowered

Thor vs Surtur God of Thunder Marvel Game Chris Hemsworth Talks Thor 3 Story & Becoming More Superpowered

In the 2011′s Thor, moviegoers witnessed an arrogant prince take steps towards becoming the heroic God of Thunder, much of his power stemming from the mighty hammer Mjolnir. With it, Thor can leap vast distances, virtually granting him the ability to fly. The square-headed hammer can fly on its own, returning to its user when thrown or summoned, but it can only be used by someone deemed “worthy.” It’s a mystical artifact that according to Marvel Comics and hinted at in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was forged from a dying star.

When Thor returned to Earth and joined The Avengers last summer, we saw him battle without the hammer, having super strength and durability that allowed him to fight the Hulk with his fists. For Thor: The Dark World, his powers are enhanced yet again on the hero’s path to protect Asgard, Earth and the rest of the realms. With even greater threats yet to be introduced however, Thor will have to put those powers to the test if star Chris Hemsworth is right about Thor 3.

Speaking with our own Kofi Outlaw at the press junket for Thor: The Dark World, Chris Hemsworth told us last week that he hasn’t yet read the script for The Avengers: Age of Ultron, but that he does have ideas of where Thor 3 should go.

“I think what’s good about this is that each time, with the Avengers, we sort of made it difficult to separate them each time there’s some sort of conflict it’s like where’s the rest of the team? And I liked that Thor has another universe or the universe to sort of take care of and keep him occupied. I think that in the comic book the sort of end of days, Armageddon aspect is probably the direction in which it will all head in. Where it’s sort of the end of all things and there’s obviously no script or anything when I read the comic books I thought it was an interesting way to go.”

By Armageddon, Hemsworth is referring to Ragnarok, an apocalypse of sorts that represents the end of Asgard. The event plays a major part in Thor comics and while on the set of Thor 2 last fall, executive producer Craig Kyle also teased similar ideas when describing to us the Tree of Yggdrasil housed within the Asgardian Hall of Science which appears in the film.

“And the effects and woes and success of the universe are spoken through this, this living object.  So, should the end of all things ever come this would probably be the first thing to fall.”

With Ragnarok comes one of Thor’s greatest enemies, Surtur, leader of the Fire Demons of Muspelheim. We asked Kyle about the possibility of them showing up and he laughed and danced around the idea, saying only that it’s an important storyline from the comics. As for Hemsworth’s desire to see Fire Demons show up in the next Thor solo movie?

“Yeah (laughs) bring them all in.”

First is was the Frost Giants of Jotunheim, and in Thor: The Dark World, the “Dark World” refers to Svartalfheim – home of Malekith and the Dark Elves. It’s only logical to round out the trilogy with big bad Surtur and his army of Fire Demons. And in the books, there are plenty of ways to tie such a story to the artifacts of the first two films, previously seen characters and another attack on Earth. It’s just a matter of when and how Marvel Studios decides to do so.

As fans will soon find out, Thor puts on an impressive show with his abilities as the God of Thunder in Thor: The Dark World and that’s something very intentional. We learned on on our visit to the set of the film last year that visual effects supervisor Jake Morrison and the production team put a lot of thought into redesigning how Thor can fly and wield the mighty hammer Mjolnir. Hemsworth told us that he and director Alan Taylor wanted to make changes on this front as well.

“It was one of my first concerns at the beginning of the film. I said, ‘look I don’t want him to feel he’s just doing hand to hand combat he’s a God we should see him off the ground more and we should see the power of that weapon and his abilities.’  So that was something we really concentrated on upping the action and the stunts and his skillset, really showcasing what he’s capable of.”

If Thor is to battle the 1000-foot tall Surtur, Marvel Studios and Hemsworth will have to up the ante again for Thor 3 which we expect could be one of Disney’s unannounced 2016 Marvel movies.

  1. I want hindu gods shiva and vishnu to fight with thor

    • better yet why not a combination of both, harihara! it would get confusing though, aryan god vs aryan gods. it would be better for thor to fight his indian counter parts, Indra or Parjanya. I wish they’d have thors chariot and goats.

  2. I want Thor to fight Surtur and his army of fire demons in the Thor 3 movie. I want it to be a 10 inch Thor 3 action figure and 10 inch villain action figure toys.

    • Both are men who enjoy the company of men….

  3. Ok, can we get one point straight, Thor does not leap with the hammer. The hammer flies and Thor control it. He even said it himself when he told Jane in the first movie as they went to retrieve the hammer. She said something like hoe will you get out, and he said he would be flying out. The hammer flys and pulls Thor with it.

  4. The comment about not being confined to earth and having other universes to play with is a little troubling. Troubling in a way because what made the original so nice was having that `fish out of water` element that was missing in part two, and if they forgo the earthly element just so we as an audience don`t have to wonder, why aren`t the avengers showing up as a team to save the day, we will once again skip the potential to explore that ‘fish out of water’ aspect which could play out really well for this franchise.

  5. If there’s one thing I hope they do in Thor 3 it’s get rid of Darcy and Selvig. Jane Foster could be a truly interesting character and Natalie Portman a brilliant actress, but she’ll never make any real imoression until she stops being one of The Three Stooges

  6. I think they should do the Ragnarok story line. Leave the movie like all the asguardians are dead. Surtur and the fire demons. But the real big bads are those who sit above in shadow. YEAH!!!!!!! Then thor can return for the fight against Thanos in Avengers 3. But powered by the Odin force. A story arc that will help in a fight against an Infinity gauntlet powered THANOS !!!!!!!!

  7. I just pray Loki will be in this one

  8. amazing news for the thor 3 .
    i am so exited …..

  9. Ok I might be weird but I think Thor should like have to fight a dragon wouldn’t that be awesome
