[Update: We now have the official gallery of Captain America images!]

Chris Evans is officially showing off his red, white, and blue duds from Marvel’s upcoming The First Avenger: Captain America, which is currently being filmed overseas in London.

We’ve seen set photos of Captain America in action, but this is the first public image of Evans in costume that has been released. Of course, it’s not the first time Evans has worked in the Marvel Universe before – starting with The Human Torch in the 2005 Fantastic Four movie.

Evans has spoken out before about how he prepared to play Captain America, but now admits fully that he was utterly terrified about taking on the role. The actor declined the part three times before changing his mind, after a meeting with Marvel Studio executives and director Joe Johnston, which led him to realize that he “was just scared” and that his “whole decision making process was fear based.” Now Evans is signed on for a six-picture deal with Marvel to play the patriotic superhero.

Check out the cover of this week’s Entertainment Weekly for the official first look at Evans as Captain America below:

Johnston very much approves of Evans in the role of Steve Rogers (a.k.a. Captain America), a character that the director sees as “an everyman who in the course of a few minutes become [sic] a perfect human specimen.” Johnston says that he wanted “to make a superhero movie that felt real, that didn’t have to rely on an overabundance of fantasy elements.”

Director Jon Favreau’s Iron Man movies are rooted in a realistic world (as much as they can be) full of semi-plausible sci-fi technology, while Kenneth Branagh has spoken before about how his Thor adaptation will balance fantastical and real-world elements. The Captain America movie should be more in the vein of the Tony Stark pics, even though it will involve magical objects like The Tesseract (known to comic fans as The Cosmic Cube) – among other things.

The Captain America movie will retain the character’s classic World War II-era origins and will set up his involvement in The Avengers as well. Studio heads are clearly confident that Evan’s portrayal of the good ol’ boy Steve Rogers will sit well with fans, seeing as that he’ll be occupying the role at least until the major Marvel movie event of 2017.

The First Avenger: Captain America arrives in 2D and 3D in theaters in the U.S. on July 22nd, 2011.

  1. I dont know what to think of it….

  2. The other pictures in the article look ok,but from what the say i get the impression cap is in charge of the howling commandos.also the skull is in hydra garb as are the enemy soldiers i hope we arent going to see a WW2 in which we fought hydra not Germany

  3. Shouldn’t Steve Rogers be just a BIT more blonde? I’m not asking for Norwegian blonde but come on, they could have gotten a bit closer and had it still look natural. /shrugs

I am going to reserve judgment on the look for now simply because they are working in the pre-modern era but I will say two things:
    - He sure as hell better lose the gun in the Avengers movie.
    - The uniform had better be updated with the correct a CHAINMAIL top in the Avengers movie or heads will roll.

  4. Looks cool better than I expected

  5. Still not convinced this will work.

    • Although I’m a pretty cynical guy (getting older will do that to you) I’m holding out hope that this turns out to be a good film.

  6. He looks like James Stewart on that magazine cover.

  7. It’s ALL looking good – Chris made The Human Torch his own – But great he’s going to put life into Capt A this time – Can’t wait for all these Marvel movie’s to hit the big-screen.
