Chris Evans Talks ‘Captain America’ Costume in ‘The Avengers

1 year ago by Ben Moore

captain america in joss whedons avengers Chris Evans Talks Captain America Costume in The Avengers

Now that Captain America: The First Avenger is days away from release, the next big Marvel film – made by Marvel, that is – will be The Avengers, circa May 2012.

So naturally, people are anxious to see what all the Avengers’ costumes will end up looking like, from Thor to Iron Man to Hawkeye to Hulk (if you can even call that a costume) to Black Widow to, maybe most important of all, modern-day Captain America.

Chris Evans recently talked to Movie Line about the differences between the Cap costume in The First Avenger and the one in The Avengers, saying:

“They each have pros and cons. [T]he first Cap costume is very cumbersome. It’s thick and it’s bulky, it’s tough to do fight sequences in, but the cowl, the helmet, can come on and off at will. The current wardrobe is a bit different. The suit, the range of motion is fantastic, you can really get some good fight sequences in. It’s a little bit more form-fitting. But the cowl, the hood, has some… changes that make it a little more difficult to get on and off.”

Not so long ago, we saw an official Avengers promo poster that was basically an artistic representation of all the characters from the team in costume and in action. Check that out below (click to enlarge!):

joss whedon the avengers poster promo 570x611 Chris Evans Talks Captain America Costume in The Avengers

Alas, for those who’ve seen the leaked Avengers trailer, it appears that Thor’s sleeveless costume is more like the Ultimate comic book version than the one above, and Iron Man’s armor is slightly different as well (his Arc Reactor is now triangular, not circular), so there’s no telling how close to the final product the costumes in the poster will end up being. Still, there’s probably some comparability worth analyzing.

On the number of Marvel films Chris Evans is contractually obligated to act in:

“It started out as a nine-picture and they dropped it down to a six-picture deal, but even six movies — they could spread those out and it could be ten years. I could be doing this ‘til I’m 40. That’s a crazy thing to think about. I don’t think anybody here could make a decision for the next ten years of your life. It’s crazy. Movies, for me up until now, have been one at a time. If my passion shifted, if my search in life went somewhere else, I could go do that. This just meant you can’t. That’s scary. And the potential lifestyle change; I’ve been making movies for ten years but I can still go to a ball game. I can still go to Disney World. I can still live my life with relative ease and anonymity, and this movie could potentially change that, and that’s scary too.”

And lastly, on the awesomeness of his co-star, Robert Downey Jr.:

“He’s so great. I can’t say enough about him, I really can’t. I didn’t know what to expect going in to work with him. He’s so talented and he’s got so much charisma and persona. I can honestly say, of all the movie stars I’ve worked with, he’s the one that when he comes on set, you really feel like, ‘Man — this guy’s a movie star!’ You just feel it. When he comes in a room he just owns the oxygen. He is a movie star, and he’s been so great. So supportive, so positive. I had to do a scene with him the other day where I was just nervous, it was just me and him, and I was just terrified. It’s Robert Downey Jr.! And he’s just, you know, every little take he gives you a fist bump, a little thumbs up, and it just changes your whole day. It probably means nothing in his mind but I go back to my trailer, like, giddy. He really is something else.”

Indeed, Chris Evans has his work cut out for him – especially in terms of performing opposite Robert Downey Jr. In the comics, Iron Man and Cap are great friends who have, at times, been at odds with one another (not the least of which was when they practically killed each other in Civil War). But at the end of the day, no matter how interesting and essential Iron Man is, it’s Cap who’s the heart of the team — the glue that holds everyone together. It’s easy to be overshadowed by Robert Downey Jr., but maybe Evans can pull it off – and hold his own.

Captain America: The First Avenger hits theaters July 22, 2011. The Avengers hits theaters May 4th, 2012.

Sorry–I grew up with the old purple original Hawkeye costume in the early comics, and I think it’s great, better than biker leather or whatever, that anyone can buy.

Never got into the comics deep but I did watch the mighty Avengers TV show. I would have designed a light battle armor that incorporates purple cloth sorta how they Obi Wan looked with Clone Armor & Jedi Robes in Clone Wars Animated Series. Hawkeye is beyond cocky and sort of an ahole so his reasoning for wearing those colors could simply be that he wanted to stand out in the media pictures. I also thought it would be better if he used a simple bow with no scopes cause I feel ittakes away from the fact that he has unrivaled precision with the bow as well as any other object.

Its a shame they were to scared to use the purple costume. Its a shame.

I can live with the costume change for Thor and I did get to see the leaked teaser. He just looks flat out badass. I just dont want them to make him the mental case. Keep him as THOR.

Hey wait a second. Are we really really sure that poster is legit? Cause if so, why is Thor’s costume different (lamer) in the leaked trailer?

    Reply
    • Marc Glave    1 year ago

it’s not legit. the article says it’s an artist’s rendering without any known ties.

nope, never mind, my mistake. maybe they’ll each have more than one costume? that might be cool. hopefully the sleeveless look won’t be for long.

I thought I saw Thor both sleeveless and with the cape at the end, but since it was so quick I could be wrong.

My point is maybe its not the Ultimate costume afterall but is instead the Classic look?

Still puzzles me that they never worked in Ant Man or Wasp into the rotation so they could star in this film. I get that adds another 2 main characters but you could easily drop Scarlet Jo, which they should, and a few others to leave room for them.

yea, I had hoped that Pym & Janet would atleast be secondary characters. A movie of just them would be difficult but a sub-plot about their abusive relationship and Pym’s insecurity issues could help the film story as a whole to ground it in reality.

      Reply
    • Wepz    1 year ago

I think they are doing that- cause there are plans for an Ant-Man film. So what they are going to do is the same as they did with the other characters. Build up the profile of Ant-man and then have him and Wasp for the Avengers sequel. I hope they do the same for the Black Panther. He would make a great addition to the team as well.

I can’t wait also to find out more about that Special Marvel Event 5 years from now- after Avengers 2.

some Ultron action hopefully. They played it well in the Avengers:Earths Mightiest Heroes tv show.

Also love how they did Black Panther stpry arc and overall character in the show as well. Wonder how they are gonna do vibranium in the movie. Did Papa Stark make it artificially or well we get a Wakanda mention? I wonder whats the deal with the battle acars on te shield in the film.

@ Wepz: I think your theory is pretty accurate (that was exactly what I was thinking/hoping too).

It’s nice to see that there’s so much interest in a Black Panther movie. I for one think it could be a huge success.

If the artist’s rendition poster is even close, Cap’s costume is getting better. The CA:TFA helmet looked like a jockstrap on his head (no disrespect to Cap himself…the movie looks great, & I love Cap!).
I would like to see the next Avengers movie have Goliath (Hank Pym…blue/yellow costume from comics, which is dynomite!), Wasp, Scarlet Witch, & Quicksilver in there on the good guy side, and maybe Kang & Ultron as some of the baddies. Now that would be “T*ts on a Ritz”, baby!

Seems like I’ve seen a photo…right here on Screen Rant of Evens in CAP uniform with a non helmet cowl/mask that looks tight and form fitting. The picture is taken from a low angle looking up at Cap. No explanation of what said pic is from, but I have been presuming it was “modern day” Cap. Vic…or anyone…411?

There are a number of costumes Cap wears in his own movie, including the one from the comics — but it’s used as a USO costume. That might be the one you’re referring to?

Just so that people know: it’s not a “leaked teaser trailer” – it was actually Captain America The First Avenger’s after-credit scene (the post-credit scene) – which is kind of the trailer – but anyone who goes to see the Cap movie will get to see that “trailer”/scene.

I saw the trailer/end-credit scene and it was pretty awesome.

The way Cap just wails on that punching bag! It really makes you believe the super soldier exists!

I don’ really see any difference in Iron Man suit from Iron Man 2 (his suit looks the same as in IM2) – which is a little disappointing – I wanted something more like the current suit in the comics.

Thor’s sleeveless outfit looks stupid (bordering on lame). I loved his chain-mail look… (from Thor the movie) I don’t get why they changed it.

Cap’s new costume looks amazing. Nuf said.

Hawkeye, Black Widow and Maria Hill also looks cool (I see Cobie Smulders DID cut her hair for the role).

I didn’t get much of a look at the Hulk, but I’m sure it’s awesome.

I think I’m going to see Cap in theaters like 4 times… just so that I can see this trailer in HQ again and again.

I would have liked to see Hawkeyes costume stand out a lot more. Its bold, purple; costume fits his attitude completely. Or model it after the Ultimate comic books.
Choices right now for future villains if they only plan on doing 3 movies with the Avengers (Probably take them to 2016/17ish, maybe?):

This is all playing off the fact that Loki/Skrulls will be the baddies in this first film. ***My theory***
      Second Film:

Masters of Evil for the next film and during that time the other marvel movies will hint or introduce these bad guys. Cap sequel could introduce Zemo or hint at him. And Zemo better have a purple costume, just make it more like Battle Armor or something.

      Third Film:
Masters of Evil do something to trigger Thanos to come to earth or where ever. And maybe have Ultron as a side plot and hopefully by then they would have introduced Wasp and Ant Man.

It would be cool to have an Avengers after-credit scene like someone posted earlier on SR; show a room with numerous valuable artifacts, and then you see a gloved hand pick up one of the gems. He puts the gem in a slot on the glove, which glows for a second, and then we see a reflection in the gem of of Thanos; they can have 1 scene per movie until Avengers: Infinity comes out. I think I would have a nerdgasm. :-)

  20. TheAvenger    1 year ago

I possible Avengers sequels I would like to see some massive destruction – ala cosmic villain – like Thanos or Korvak for Avengers 2. For Avengers 3 I would like to see Ultron (only if Ant-Man is in the film though- because he’s the one who created Ultron), maybe if they make an Ant-Man movie they could hint at Pym creating Ultron and then make that the main plot of Avengers 3.

For Iron Man 3 I only want the Mandarin and the Ten Rings (the terrorist organisation) – I would have settled for Crimson Dynamo, but seeing as that character was killed off in IM2 I doubt that will happen.

In the Thor sequel I would like to see Thor explore more of the 9 realms, with characters like Balder the Brave, Beta Ray Bill, Sif and maybe the Valkeries (Warriors Three included as well). For the villains I would like to see Loki (of course), Amora the Enchantress, the executioner and some more Frost Giants and other spooky creatures from the dark seedy corner of the cosmos.

As for Cap: there are too many options… Zemo, Von Strukker, Madame Hydra, or MODOC (okay, those last 2 are probably a stretch) And if the movie takes place in the present day (which I’m not too keen on), they could put the Falcon or someone as a supporting character and put Sin and Crossbones in as minor villains.

For the Hulk sequel… who else but the Leader… I mean come on, they have to do the Leader!

Anyway, those were my opinions for heroes and villain for future Marvel films (not that anyone cares ;) )… but for those who stuck in there and finished reading, thanks :)

At this point though, I don’t think The Hulk is as marketable as all the other characters are and the type of interest in him. I liked the rebooted version with Norton but by no means would I want to see another movie only starring him. I get that Bruce is a cocky, wants to do the right thing, and fighting with his other side, but I don’t think that would really draw in a lot of ppl, especially since the Hulk can’t really talk that well, too. I think he will fit in very well as a supporting character and have everyone else play off his misfortune of turning into the hulk.

Away from these characters – I’m dying to know what they’re going to do with The Hulk in this movie and in the future – As a life-long Hulk fan I would love to see them spend more time exploring the monster/hero a bit more – we all know about Bruce Banner – but The Hulk is not just a monster who just appears,, smashes things up a bit, then vanishes…in the comics he stays Hulk for a while and we get to know his view on things. So please…more Hulk next films please !

Yeah, I’m also a little disappointed, but I fully understand why Pym (Ant-Man) and Janet (the Wasp) weren’t included in the movie.

I am expecting/hoping that they at least mention those characters in the movie (it would be even sweeter if there were cameo appearances). I mean, they were founding members of the Avengers after all.

The cosmic characters have to be exsplored…The Inhumans,Nova and Adam Warlock..

*Great time to be in the MCU! DC/Warner***after that Green Lantern screw up…just poorly managed and produced and…..anyway and the lastest writting problems on ‘Man of Steel..Then ‘FOX…yes FOX making a good quality film with Xmen first Class..
