The news that The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina would not return for a fifth season was devastating for fans. This news hit just before the final episodes were slated to air and soured the last batch of episodes. Netflix’s Sabrina set its path apart from Riverdale and it was surprising that it came to such an abrupt end.

The final season was full of heart as well as heartache. Though creative force Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa did not know of its cancellation when it was filmed, there is still a sense of many things coming full circle. Sabrina’s last season dealt with haunting themes that were perfect for its final send-off.

Sabrina’s Battle With The Darkness

Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

The first of the Eldritch Terrors manifested in the form of The Darkness. The Darkness takes all of your insecurities and projects them back. This was a great use of allegorical depression. Sabrina Spellman and her temporal twin Sabrina Morningstar go to fight The Darkness together.

Sabrina Morningstar feels as though no one loves her and that she’s alone. Sabrina Spellman encourages her that they have each other and to not be pulled into the darkness. This episode focuses on self-love and not letting toxic thoughts overcome you.

Trapping The Uninvited

The second Eldritch Terror came in the form of The Uninvited. While most of The Terrors are intent on world domination or ending the world, The Uninvited was the outlier. Appearing in the form of a vagrant, The Uninvited asks for hospitality. Only when he is refused does he retaliate.

The Uninvited desires to be accepted. Sabrina shows him kindness but only to trap him. He realizes this at the last possible moment. Though he was a Terror, his sadness and loneliness are heartbreaking as he falls for the ruse.

Theo Makes Robin Leave

Theo Robin Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Despite not having much screen time in season four, Theo has his share of sadness. Robin chooses Theo after leaving the Pagans but their relationship is not safe after the Eldritch Terrors arrive.

Robin’s friend Moth arrives to convince Robin to leave with her back to the Fae realms. If he continues to stay with Theo, soon his powers will disappear altogether. Robin chooses to stay but Theo realizes that he has to do the right thing and make the choice for Robin. Even though they love each other, Theo tells Robin to leave for his benefit.

Lilith Kills Adam

Lilith Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

A villain since season one, Lilith’s affiliations were never pinned down. She always did what was best for her. That included getting pregnant by Lucifer so he wouldn’t kill her. When it seemed that Caliban was trying to kill her by making her baby come early, Lilith fled to Greendale under the protection of the witches.

Lilith has never been sympathetic. She became pregnant as a power play. Even so, when Lucifer tells her he is taking Adam away from her, Lilith’s sorrow is evident. She deals with it in the worst possible way and kills Adam so that Lucifer can’t have him. The act itself was evil, but Lilith is nothing if not complex. She mourns the loss and attempts to revive him in any way she can.

Zelda Always Loses

Zelda Spellman Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

From the loss of Vinegar Tom to Sabrina, Zelda rarely comes out on top. She finds love and becomes head of the Church of Hecate, but even that is short-lived. The sharpest blow is realizing that Mambo Marie is not who she said she was. After the dead start rising, Marie reveals herself to be Baron Samedi, the voodoo deity who must shepherd the dead back to where they belong.

After mourning the loss of the relationship, Zelda has to watch her niece die in a ritualistic sacrifice to save the world. Zelda has little respite from her losses.

Dorcas Forgives Agatha

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Agatha’s arc of the season was dealing with her insanity after killing Dorcas. Dorcas and Agatha were closer than sisters and Agatha suffered the consequences of her crime. Dorcas returns from the dead along with many others in Greendale. But it is only when Dorcas leaves that Agatha regains her sanity.

Even though Dorcas forgives Agatha, she still has to live with the knowledge of what she had done. Agatha regains her mind, but it comes at a cost.

Sabrina Morningstar Is Treated As Lesser

Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman Netflix Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

After last season's fight with the Pagans, Sabrina has to use time travel to become victorious. Because of this, there are two Sabrinas in the same timeline. For most of season four, Sabrina Spellman and Sabrina Morningstar keep this a secret. But when it comes to saving the world, Sabrina Morningstar is the one who gets the worse outcome.

She is the one that is sent to an opposite Cosmos to stop worlds from crashing into each other. While she's there, she realizes it is just another Eldritch Terror. She is killed unceremoniously so that Sabrina Spellman and her friends can carry on. And even after she is already dead, Sabrina Morningstar's body is used as a vessel to house Sabrina Spellman's spirit.

Sabrina Sacrifices Herself

Sabrina Spellman Death in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Even though Sabrina’s battle with The Void could have been solved easily, her fate is sealed in the final episode. Sabrina opens Pandora’s box to trap The Void from consuming the world. Her aunts learn this and attempt to save her before her work is done. Because of this, part of The Void is trapped in Sabrina's soul.

Sabrina decides the only way to save the world is to sacrifice herself. The montage of Sabrina remembering her life is almost as devastating as her aunts commissioning a statue in her honor. Sabrina’s death was needless and left the show with a cold ending and no catharsis.

Nick Takes His Own Life

Sabrina and Nick on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

What was even worse than Sabrina sacrificing herself was Nick doing the same. Nick says he swam in the Sea of Sorrows, a well-known implication of suicide. He could not live in a world where Sabrina did not exist. While most characters were struggling to do so, Nick’s death was senseless.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina frames it as a romantic gesture but it just makes the ending even more depressing as that's a very problematic concept to be pushing.

No More Episodes

Sabrina stands with the Weird Sisters

Among death, metaphors about depression, and more death, the tragedy of the last season is that it is the last. The creators did not intend for this to be the end and even though it seemed to put a bookend on the series, it is obvious this was not the ending that was intended.

Sabrina was a character that never backed down from a fight and in the end, she loses, which feels like a shame of a way to end things.
