In 2018, Netflix premiered Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, another series based on the Archie Comics universe. The show surrounded Half-Witch and Half-Mortal Sabrina Spellman, as she desires to hold on to her identity and not sign her name away to the Devil. Fans quickly loved the horror-based series and found enjoyment in the friendships and stories the show told.

Before the time jump meant to flash forward seven yearsRiverdale's main characters are High School students. While homework is always the least of their problems, it is an essential place for everyone to gather and is even at the heart of some of the mysteries.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina also has its main characters around the same age. Schoolwork is not anyone's greatest priority at Baxter High School, either. Still, because both shows have their characters around the same age, they will be going through similar events or emotional struggles.

Different: Magic

Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina in Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina

Riverdale may have its share of crazy, but it hasn't gone as far as magic. That is a vast difference from the magic-centric Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Magic is a key part of the story with Half-Witch, Half-Mortal Sabrina Spellman, as the central character.

On Riverdale, all the teenagers have been seen with laptops and touch screen cellphones. But, cars, the school, the hospital, and the town itself do not match the advanced technology. At one point, a villain gives out VHS tape recordings of everybody's homes.

Everyone just so happens to own a VHS player, while Veronica, who also owns one, watches the footage on her newer flat-screen television. Others watch the footage on a much older television. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina shares a similar look. Like Riverdale, aspects of Greendale are a mix between the present day and the past.

Different: Stakes

Riverdale Black Hood, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Sabrina and Lucifer

Stakes tend to be high for both shows, as they have each featured their share of horrifying events. But, there are some major differences. For Sabrina Spellman, many of the stakes affect her directly.

Sabrina is at the center of everything, and each season has advanced her abilities and shown what she is meant to be and what she is capable of. This is not the case for Riverdale. Archie, Betty, Jughead, and Veronica may get involved with their small town's dark side, but not every villain is out to get them.

Different: Friend Group

Harvey, Theo, and Roz on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Betty, Jughead, Veronica, and Archie in Riverdale

One of Riverdale's biggest problems is how it separates Archie, Betty, Jughead, and Veronica. It's like fans are watching several different shows since each of the main characters has their own plotline apart from the main group.

At times it could be rare to see the core four together. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina doesn't make the same mistake. If Sabrina is separated from Harvey, Roz, and Theo, she could usually be found with Nick, Ambrose, or Prudence. Sabrina's storylines allow her friends to be an integral part of her life while also letting them have their own journey.

If there is anything Archie and Sabrina have in common, it's their willingness to get involved in things that don't concern them. There may not be a show if Archie and Sabrina didn't get involved, but it is still a noticeable pattern with each of them. Archie didn't need to become a vigilante that fights small-town crime. He didn't have to start the Red Circle to catch the Black Hood.

Yet, he thought he was helping and decided to do it anyway. As for Sabrina, one of the most significant examples of getting involved where she wasn't asked to was her failed necromancy attempt to save Harvey's brother, Tommy. Sabrina has gotten involved in areas where she wasn't asked to afterward.

Different: Mysteries

Riverdale is a town of mystery. Each season comes with a new set of questions about what is going to happen next. Betty and Jughead become young sleuths, looking into all the confusion and dark secrets Riverdale has to offer.

Similar: Teen Angst

Both shows exhibit a strong use of teen angst. It may be toward a journey of self-discovery, a love triangle, or life struggles; each show has plenty of angst.

Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina include relationship drama, having their main characters struggle between their individual wishes and how their choices affect their relationship. Each show also portrays the characters trying to break away from their family's past to find their own future. Veronica, Betty, Theo, and Sabrina exhibit these wishes many times.

Different: Parent Involvement

Riverdale Hiram and Hermione, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Zelda and Hilda

One of the most significant differences between the two shows is how involved the parents are in their children's lives. On Riverdale, everyone's parents are just as involved in the dark underground of the town. Everyone's past is linked to each other, and they all have backstories that connect them through the years. All the parents have a connection to the high school and have a substantial amount of involvement in what is going on with their children.

On Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Hilda and Zelda are heavily involved, but they are the only ones. While Father Blackwood may be Prudence's biological father, he is willing to leave her behind. While Harvey, Roz, and Theo's parents are included, they are not as invested in their children's lives. Nick's parents have never even been included in the series.
