Child's Play creator Don Mancini has a killer idea for a crossover with A Nightmare on Elm Street. Were such a crossover to occur, it of course wouldn't be the first time that Elm Street's resident slasher, Freddy Krueger, tangled with another horror icon. In 2003, Freddy famously battled Friday the 13th's Jason Voorhees for the title of best supernatural serial killer in the blockbuster crossover Freddy vs. Jason, which made a boatload of cash despite dismissal by critics.

To date, Child's Play's diminutive murderous doll Chucky has yet to go head to head with another horror villain, although the idea of crossing him over with other small horror icons like the Leprechaun or the puppets from Puppet Master has long been a popular one among horror fans. While Freddy currently languishes on the shelf though, Chucky's career is still going strong, with latest sequel Cult of Chucky set to hit DVD and Blu-ray in October.

Mancini - who has not only written all 7 Child's Play films, but also directed Seed, Curse, and Cult - shared his idea for a potential Nightmare on Elm Street crossover on a recent edition of the Necronomicast. Here's what he had to say, as transcribed by Bloody Disgusting.

"I’ve talked about this a lot over the years and it’s actually an idea that I think is cool and doable. It’s just… it would require arranging all the legal red tape between two different studios. But I think Chucky versus Freddy would be awesome. Because they both have distinct personalities, and they both talk, they would be a really fun double act.

"My idea for the movie is to do it as a horror movie version of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. It’s called Child’s Play on Elm Street. Chucky ends up in the bedroom of a house on Elm Street. And Freddy meets him there. And they’re, like, fans of each other. So they have this rapport. But then they realize Elm Street isn’t big enough for the two of them. It only can contain one killer.”

Chucky wields a giant pair of scissors in Child's Play 2

As Mancini alludes to above, the chances of a Chucky/Freddy crossover film happening are very slim, as Universal Pictures owns the rights to Child's Play, while New Line owns A Nightmare on Elm Street. Still, the idea of them meeting up is a fun one, especially since both are such verbose, often darkly humorous characters. This would stand in stark contrast to Freddy fighting Jason, since Jason's only form of speech is cutting someone's head off with a machete. Freddy and Chucky engaging in a verbal exchange could be worth the price of admission all by itself.

As to how an actual physical battle would go, it's hard to really imagine one, as Chucky is so small, and Freddy has nearly limitless power if he gets his enemies in the dream world. Of course, one wonders if possessed dolls would even be able to enter a normal dream state that Freddy was capable of interacting with. Either way, both villains are seemingly impossible to kill, as proven by their many resurrections on film. Perhaps the best route for any human characters being menaced by both baddies would be to contact The Warrens from The Conjuring and have them come and exorcise both spirits back to hell.
