Charlie’s Justice League Or Mad Penguins Of America?

Justice League

So… How’s THAT for a convoluted title? :-)

The rumour is that George Miller may be the man to direct the live action movie version of Justice League of America (aka as the less U.S.-centric sounding JLA). However IESB just posted that there may be another in line for the director’s chair on this project… Are you ready?

McG.

Yes, the man that brought us the deeply moving and entertaining Charlie’s Angels movies has a chance to take the reins of a superhero movie populated by the most iconic heroes on the planet.

Now before I get all critical on this guy I have to admit I haven’t seen his movie We Are Marshall, which was a serious flick. It’s only rated at 50% over at Rotten Tomatoes by over at IMDB it’s got a pretty solid 7.2/10. Of course I don’t put as much credence in the IMDB votes as I do with R/T, but 50% isn’t completely awful.

If you remember, at one time McG (sigh, a non-rapper white guy with a “handle”… yeesh) was in line to direct the long awaited Superman movie before Brian Singer took over. In retrospect I’m wondering if a McG helmed Superman movie could have been much worse than Superman Returns. Back at the time I believe that he did want to make some rather hideous and idiotic changes to the character and/or costume.

George Miller on the other hand was the director of the original Mad Max movie and served as producer on Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. Then again he’s also responsible for Happy Feet, the penguin movie. I suppose if you’re capable of both ends of that spectrum you might be able to handle the Justice League…

What superheroes will be in the movie? At this point it looks like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern and possibly Aquaman. And according to the rumor mill one of the JLA members will not survive to see a sequel. This is total speculation but I’d put my money on either Aquaman or The Flash.

At this early stage my gut-check-o-meter is hovering around “Pessimistic.”

  1. Glad you caught this before I did… or I might have to have gone off on a rant about ‘JLA’ being suddenly turning into a public service announcement about global warming with as much subtlety as a sledgehammer to the face. Then again, Miller already did that with the abysmal ‘Happy Feet’ so maybe we’re safe.

It’s his recent inability to focus and retain a mood I’m worried about.

As for McG. Ugh. No thanks.

I want ‘JLA’ to be reasonably serious in tone, ala ‘Batman Begins’ and ‘Superman Returns’ (which, for the record, I loved)… but McG will just make it a colourful, “fun” film.

Meanwhile… I’m stoked that Green Lantern may finally make his big screen debut (sans Jack Black). That character has so much cinema potential, it’s a shame he’s a DC/WB character. Imagine what Marvel Studios could do.

Makes me tear up just thinkin’ about it. ;o)

Now, the big question: Bale or no Bale? Methinks no Bale, I’m afraid.

  2. Yeah, this doesn’t exactly promote a lot of confidence in the people running the show. If I had to choose between McG directing or Jack Black as Green Lantern, I don’t know what I’d do (both would be awful decisions…just trying to indicate how bad a move I believe hiring McG for this would be). On the other hand, if I had to choose between fun and entertaining, or serious and boring (for me, that should have been the synopsis for Superman Returns), I’ll go with the former. At least then I’ll be able to stay awake for the entire movie, thus validating the subsequent outrage.

If a character gets killed off, I’d guess it would be either Green Lantern or the Flash. Since there are multiple versions of each character in the comics, the question is which character to include. If the Flash is getting killed off, then Barry Allen is probably the obvious choice. Green Lantern would be a bit more complicated, because if you’re going to kill him off, then you really shouldn’t make it Hal Jordan. Those Hal Jordan fans are a rabid bunch ;)

  3. And with good reason…

He’s the only one with a ‘classic’ superhero feel to him, rather than that of a support character.

    Though I do like Kyle.

  4. What’s goin’ on with this movie anyway? Wich Flash? Which Green Lantern? Hal and Barry I hope,I mean do it right, man!! This had better be a good one,I have high expectations for it. The JLAers should be Superman,Batman,Wonder Woman,Flash (BA),and GL (HJ). Interesting…..

  5. It’s waaaay to early for any details to be out regarding this one.

  6. If John Stewart or Kyle Rayner are used for GL in the flick,I expect the film to at least make mention (if not have a few flashbacks) of the greatest Green Lantern of our time: Hal Jordan. He’s the bomb, man!

And that goes for the Flash too! I at least want a good word put in for my main man Barry Allen! And speaking of ol’ BA,wouldn’t it be cool if Matt Damon played him? He’d be perfect for either Captain America or the Barry Allen Flash. If Matt D ain’t playin’ him, than an “unknown” would be cool.

  7. Can’t really see Damon in either of those roles, but if I had to pick one I’d say Flash. Totally do not see him as Cap.

    Vic

  8. Vic,why not? Usually when I suggest Damon as Cap to people their immediate reaction is that he’s not big’n buff enough to be the shield slinger. I have to agree a little with those people there, but that’s not a problem that can’t be fixed. The Flash,Barry Allen,on the other hand is more lean than beefy, and besides,Damon’s face kinda looks like the old Silver Age Flash drawings by Carmine Infantino. Damon certainly has the acting chops to pull off either character, plus he’s not a star on the Tom Cruise/Leonardo Decaprio level, but is able to carry his own movie. The Wizard mag also suggested Matt for the role of the good Captain. Both good captains, actually:Capt. America and Capt. James T. Kirk for Abram’s Trek movie.

Kane,Miller had definitely not be doing anything as stereotype with JLA as making a public service announcement about global warming. Again. Else I’ll be really angry. And you wouldn’t like me when I’m angry. Routh and Bale have already met with each other and Warner Bros. about JLA and Jack Black won’t be playing Green Lantern. Thank God.

  9. I don’t know… I just think you need (and I can’t believe I’m saying this) more of a stereotypical lantern-jawed guy to pay Cap.
