After months of whispers that Charlie Sheen is creating a new TV series, we now know that Sheen’s next foray into television will be based on the 2003 comedy (was it?) Anger Management, which starred Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson.
The series – which has no network commitment, but is close to signing a production deal with Lionsgate – will follow Sheen in the Jack Nicholson role as the unconventional therapist. It is not yet known if the name will be the same, but the character’s background story will be different.
In Sheen’s iteration, he will be playing a former athlete we obtains his master’s degree in social work during the offseason. Proving the salaries of athletes past their glory are on the decline, the character will become a counselor to defendants in the criminal justice system who are suffering from anger management problems. Combine that with the anger issues that Sheen’s character will already have, and you have the makings for comedy gold – at least that’s what Sheen is hoping for.
Following Sheen’s tumultuous relationship and subsequent fallout with Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre, everyone’s favorite winning warlock is turning to familiar friends for this television adaptation.
In this instance, that familiar friend happens to be veteran producer Joe Roth. Roth, who has worked with Sheen on Major League, The Three Musketeers and Young Guns, owns the rights to the “Anger Management” name and film screenplay and will serve as a producer on the series, along with Sheen.
Even though a production deal with Lionsgate is close to being finalized for the Tiger Blood-sponsored new series, no network has committed to airing the show. It was rumored that Sheen had, at one time, been talking to TBS and HBO, although both have denied those rumors.
Whether or not you’re a fan of Charlie Sheen, he’s proven that he can bring in the ratings. Despite the fact that this potential ratings draw will certainly depend the quality of the series, there’s no doubt that it will eventually find a home on one of the many networks.
While it’s hard to say whether a television series based on a barely acceptable comedy movie from 8 years ago will be, as the warlocks say, “Winning!” one has to admit that level of rational acceptability for this series appears quite high with Sheen’s involvement. The notion of Sheen yelling at inmates brings a chuckle - like the legendary lettuce enthusiast from HBO's Scared Straight documentary that Chris Rock famously joked about.
