Lionsgate Hires Charlie Kaufman to Adapt ‘Chaos Walking’

Though Lionsgate has hired Francis Lawrence to direct Catching Fire, The Hunger Games sequel, the studio is already putting plans for another adaptation of a hit young adult novel into motion. Word is that the studio has just acquired the rights to yet another dystopian future setting series called Chaos Walking. Not only that, but Charlie Kaufman has been hired to pen the adaptation of the first installment in the series.

The report from Deadline makes it seem like just another acquisition of another young adult novel series, and the most surprising thing about all of this is that they hired Kafuman to write the adaptation of first book in the series, The Knife of Never Letting Go. But when you read the premise of Patrick Ness’ novels, you will soon realize that the themes of Chaos Walking is right in Kafuman’s wheelhouse.

The story is ‘set in a dark future where humanity is infected with a disease called Noise. The infection makes human thoughts audible and anything that was considered remotely private is now in the air for everyone to hear. As a result, chaos ensues and one corrupt figure tries to seize control of human settlements and wage war on an alien race. Only  Todd Hewitt holds the key to stopping planet wide-destruction.’

Kafuman will be juggling adapting the script for Chaos Walking and preparing on his next directorial effort Frank or Francis – so asking him to direct seems out of the question. But it seems fitting that Kaufman is brought in to write the screenplay for Chaos Walking. He has plenty of  works that explore the human mind. Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Human Nature are just some prime examples of Kaufman’s exploration of the human psyche.

This is an interesting hire, but an exciting one nonetheless. Kafuman was initially hired to pen the adaptation of Susan Orlean book The Orchid Thief. But instead of writing a straight-up adaptation of the novel, the screenwriter penned an ingenious script that took the film into a completely different direction. This resulted in Adaptation. So if Kafuman can do that with The Orchid Thief, imagine what the screenwriter can do with Chaos Walking.

As aforementioned, Kafuman is currently busy preparing for the Jack Black and Steve Carell-starring film Frank or Francis. The film will follow Black as a blogger who has it in for a film director played by Carell. The interesting thing about this project is that the film is a musical. It is also said that Nicolas Cage, Elizabeth Banks, Paul Rubens, Catherine Keener, and Kevin Kline are all circling roles.
