The upcoming Avengers film will see four (or more) Marvel superheroes team-up together including Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America. The wheels have already started turning to bring these four heroes together, with the latter two still sans an actor to portray them.
Concentrating on The First Avenger: Captain America – a director has already been signed on in the form of Joe Johnston (Jumanji, Jurassic Park III and Hidalgo… ouch…), Narnia writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely nabbed to pen the script, and a release date of July 22nd, 2011 set (pushed back from the original May 6th, 2011 date).
Now, as I said, all we need is an actor to dawn the stars-and-striped suit, and pick up that famous shield. So who could play the Captain? Well, how ’bout G.I. Joe star Channing Tatum?

It was rumored a while ago (one which seems to rear it’s head almost like clockwork every so often) that Will Smith was going to play the Marvel hero, but that rumor has officially been debunked. Which is great news for Tatum, as Smith’s possible involvement seemed to be the only thing holding him back from pursuing the role:
“I would love to talk about it… When I’d heard that Will Smith was [interested], I’m just like, ‘God, yeah. That’s who should play it… It would be a different Captain America than we all know in the comic, but it’s perfect.”
MTV reminds us that Smith isn’t the only rumored actor to portray the Captain – Matthew “Dude!” McConaughey has been repeatedly brought up in fan message boards as a possible candidate, as well as wrestling star John Cena.
Of course this is just one actor displaying some wishful thinking publicly – even though he may very well be looked at by Marvel as a possibility at some point in the future, I just can’t see them going with him in the end. Looking at the pictures (one shown below) of Captain America, as well as taking into account the character’s attributes and essence, Tatum just doesn’t embody him.

It’ll be interesting to see if they go with a popular and famous actor like Will Smith or Brad Pitt (with the latter, I’m just throwing in a famous name – I actually think Pitt would be a great choice for the other yet-to-be-cast Avenger known as Thor), or with a no-name like they did with Brandon Routh in Superman Returns. If they did go down the latter route, it may benefit our being able to buy into the actor at hand as the Captain.
So who do you think should play Captain America? Do you think Tatum is a good choice, and will he even get a shot at the role?
The First Avenger: Captain America is out on July 22nd, 2011.

Brad Pitt has paid his dues as an actor he deserves it. He fits the closest and will respect the character. All these unknowns and wrestlers you guys keep mentioning will f#$% up the chemistry. Some Characters should or could be done by unknowns, I’m sorry but Cap just aint one of em. That sh#$ won’t sell well here in the states and sure as hell won’t sell internationally especially how other countries see America today. And don’t tell me you don’t care about foreign reviews and sales cuz I’m sure Marvel, their employees, and bank lenders sure as hell do care.
“I would love to talk about it… When I’d heard that Will Smith was [interested], I’m just like, ‘God, yeah. That’s who should play it… It would be a different Captain America than we all know in the comic, but it’s perfect.”
The guy’s an idiot. Terrible idea for Captain America. John Cena? Even worse. Matthew McCon-whatever? What are you people doing? You’re killing this character just by suggesting these garbage actors! Worst thread I’ve ever read.
I’m fine with Tatum. From the first time I saw him in “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” I actually thought that if a Captain America film were to be made….this would be the guy. He looks the part. Regardless of what say, he can act and continues to get parts. Michael Mann is renowned for being picky in casting his films and he has Tatum as Prety Boy Floyd in this summer’s “Public Enemies”. That has to say something right there. Sometimes you just don’t know what a certain actor can do until they get “that” one role.
Before he went into modeling and acting he was an athlete, he attended military school and he also knows kung fu and in gor-chor kung fu, for which he has earned belts in both. I think he has enough to draw upon and he’s enough of a no-name to not be taken outta the film like a Brad Pitt or Matt Damon would.
He’s at the right age to be a fish-out-of-water, frozen in time soldier of WWII. I can totally see him being plucked outta ice by Downey Jr. as Stark and Jackson as Fury. This could be good!
Why is everyone dancing around the fact that he likes to talk like hes from Harlem haha, I haven’t seen a movie with him in it yet where he can do any other other character. They might as well cast Eminem if they are considering this guy.
Brad Pitt and Matthew McConaughey are TOO OLD. Cap is suppoed to be in his early to mid twenties.
has anyone thought of Jensen Ackles? He has alot of support on the imdb board of captain america. he is 6 foot 1. Pretty athletic and has alot of potential. Been on a consistent series for 4 years now has been praised for his performance as Daniel Cathy in A Few Good Men on stage. he also has a look that can be associated with steve rogers.
I have said it before, I will say it again. Matt Damon.
I’ve always thought that Matt Damon could pull it off too, even though he might be the right age, he does look a little young to be ordering Ironman and the others around as their leader..
I like the idea of Jason O’Mara (Life On Mars), I think he could possibly pull it off. Same with Matt Damon and Brad Pitt and I also like the idea of Ryan McPartlin (Chuck). But I would also like to throw out Tamoh Penikett (Dollhouse, Battlestar Galactica)
David F. makes a great point. I am also critical on Channing, and that comment about Will Smith adds more coal to the furnace, BUT, if Michael Mann sees something in him, then there must be something special. I mean, it is Michael Mann talking here, not Eli Roth or whoever directed the Dragonball movie.
From Step Up, to Captain America? I would literally shoot him in the face if he ruined my all time favorite comic character. I could do a better job at being Captain America than Channing “Step Up” Tatum. As far as Michael Mann casting him, I can only say, his agent must be his mom, and she must be excellent in the sack. Michael Mann, how you have fallen from grace…Its been a while since heat. What was your last big project? Miami Vice? How’d that turn out for ya? Collateral…eehhh it was alright. Ali….ehhh, ok? The Insider? Decent flick. Everything about Public Enemies looks balling, except now I know the guy that starred in a rip-off of Never Back Down( and is currently starring in the GI Joe movie that looks like Michael Bay ejaculated on a storyboard and wrote a few original Joe’s names on) is going to be in it. Bale? Fantastic! I had no idea who he was 5 years ago, saw Reign of Fire, and got hooked. Fantastic. Depp? I’ve respected him since Edward Scissorhands(who else can make that role loveable and take it completely seriously?)and have admired him since. Marion Cottillard? Not my cup of tea in the looks department, but a decent actress. Billy Crudup? Certainly one of the most underrated actors in the biz. Blue penis aside, he certainly steals every scene he’s in, especially supporting roles(he doesn’t really take any other kind.) Will Smith was a dumb rumor(I’m sure when they make a Falcon movie Mr. Smith would be perfect) Brad Pitt would’ve been a decent choice 10 years ago, but a guy starring a movie named Fighting? Don’t ruin the Captain. Let Tatum play Bucky. And die in the first 20 minutes of the film.
Colin Ferguson for cap.
if he got Built he would be perfect !
the guy from eureka
he looks like him.
I say go with an unknown, I say go with me!
I’m 6′3″, 230lbs, a former US Marine…
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2490189/
I saw go with me. I’m 370 lbs, 6′1”…. oh, wait a minute, I thought this was talking about playing The Blob.
I don’t know if this guy has already been mentioned, but how about Jensen Ackles from Supernatural to play Cap.
HJ
Has anyone considered Josh Hartnett as Cap? I think he would do it justice.
i´m a woman, and i’m not american, so excuse my bad english, but for me the ideal all american man is jensen ackles, he is sexy, funny and tall and he is from Texas! lol.
pfft to the last comment.
I think they should go with the no-name option and give me a chance to audition. I believe I have the physical attributes and ability to bring something new and innovative to the role!
Not to be a bandwagon jumper, but I also think Jensen would be a great choice for Cap. His age is a bit older than I’d like for the role, but he also looks younger than what he is. I also think he’s an excellent actor- watch a few episodes of Supernatural and you’ll see that. And his look is right for the role. I’ve seen a lot of post that concentrate on the actors looks instead of their chops when casting Captain America, but Jensen is a man who I think brings looks and talent to the table.
I think Matt Damon should definitely be considered. He could definitely play the part, but if they don’t go with him, that Jensen Ackles guy looks like Captain America. Never seen him act, but he at least looks the part.
Just please not John Cena or Channing Tatum. Those fags suck at movie roles. I consider the Marine to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. McConaughey might be able to pull off the role, but lets go with Damon or Ackles first.
(Also, MAKE IT AN AMERICAN ACTOR, DAMNIT! ITS FRIGGIN CAPTAIN AMERICA FOR CHRIST SAKE!)
I can’t believe i’m saying this, cause I love Cap and hate Matthew McConaughey. but he would be perfect for the Avengers movie if they were never doing a solo cap movie. but they are, so forget about him completly. I assume the cap movie is going to start with Steve rogers getting injected with the super soldier serum when he was still a young teen and to be honest after hearing Justin Hartly being mentioned I can’t even picture anyone else doing it. Hed be perfect. He can be the puny kid that gets rejected from even joining the army, and he could pull off cap the way it he is supposed to be during the war with Bucky. Matt Damon could pull off Bucky…maybe…but I can’t believe his name is being mentioned for Cap. Will Smith would do it well (it would be different Cap, but hed do it well however like Matthew also for the Avengers not the solo cap. Or a movie about Young Avengers member Patriot’s grandfather who was captain america for awhile, but that movie would never do well cause it was such a small story line, so long ago. I’m hoping that namor is brought up in this movie as well, because it would be around the time of WWII and the Invaders and I think Zachary whatshisname (Sylar from heros, and spock in the new star trek) should play him (and not only cause namor and spock have pointy ears) because he’s got namor’s anger down, hed be ideal.
@ulik – Captin America isn’t a household name?!?!?! What?!?!?! he’s Captain America. i’ll admit he’s not as known as Superman or Batman like you said. But still he’s not far off.
@charlienecro – Josh hartnett – he could maybe pull it off, but not well. I think I’d overall be pretty disapointed seeing him As Captain America.
Also….Cena…Really? You people can’t be serious. Cena?
Bratt Pitt has to be Thor. No one could do it better.
About all the posts off Captain America having to be American. As a Canadian, with Wolverine being our only real Canadian Hero. I wouldn’t want anyone playing him aside from Hugh Jackman and what is he agian…Austrailian, I think, either way…he isn’t Canadian. As long as Captain America doesn’t have like a british Accent or something the actors nationallity makes no difference as long as he’s true to Cap.
Mark Wahlberg or Vin Diesel for captain America
Travis Fimmel would br good As Cap
fairly unknown, but with decent acting chops
he held is own with Patrick Swazey in the “Beast”
he has the right height 6′1″ blond/blue eyes he could buff up real nice
Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake Guitarist, he is a blondie and looks the part) for Thor and The Keyboardist of DragonForce for CA
the fellow who played the Punisher in “Punisher War Zone”, was a Brit.
Chris Pine for Captain America!!!!!!!!!
IM TELLING YOU IM TELLING YOU LOOK UP THE NEW SHOW HUMAN TARGET, LOOK AT THE LEAD ACTOR, HE WAS IN FRINGE TOO THATS CAPTAIN AMERICA THATS CAPTAIN AMERICA THATS CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I actually like the idea of Tatum as Cap. He looks the part and he is thin now which would be perfect since in the beginning of the movie Steve Rodgers is a skinny guy who gets big after being part of the Super-Soldier experiment. He would be perfect and hes young so he’ll look the part for a few years. I have not seen any of his movies, so I cant judge his acting abilities. But I will watch G.I. Joe and Public Enemies and will see how he does. But looks wise, he is the best choice by far.
I was thinking about this the day before this was posted, how ironic. He also knows how to get in shape so that wont be a problem when he’ll have to put on the muscle. He is American and has that All-American look with the blonde-hair and blue eyes, just like Capt. America.
To ogb.I don’t know what cap comic you have been reading but cap has always had a bodybuilder look.Cena would look good as cap.But he needs to learn how to act.
I can see John Cena as Cap. it just might work. I’m gonna throw this out there……former WWE and current UFC superstar Brock Lesner as “US Agent.”
