The upcoming Avengers film will see four (or more) Marvel superheroes team-up together including Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America. The wheels have already started turning to bring these four heroes together, with the latter two still sans an actor to portray them.
Concentrating on The First Avenger: Captain America – a director has already been signed on in the form of Joe Johnston (Jumanji, Jurassic Park III and Hidalgo… ouch…), Narnia writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely nabbed to pen the script, and a release date of July 22nd, 2011 set (pushed back from the original May 6th, 2011 date).
Now, as I said, all we need is an actor to dawn the stars-and-striped suit, and pick up that famous shield. So who could play the Captain? Well, how ’bout G.I. Joe star Channing Tatum?

It was rumored a while ago (one which seems to rear it’s head almost like clockwork every so often) that Will Smith was going to play the Marvel hero, but that rumor has officially been debunked. Which is great news for Tatum, as Smith’s possible involvement seemed to be the only thing holding him back from pursuing the role:
“I would love to talk about it… When I’d heard that Will Smith was [interested], I’m just like, ‘God, yeah. That’s who should play it… It would be a different Captain America than we all know in the comic, but it’s perfect.”
MTV reminds us that Smith isn’t the only rumored actor to portray the Captain – Matthew “Dude!” McConaughey has been repeatedly brought up in fan message boards as a possible candidate, as well as wrestling star John Cena.
Of course this is just one actor displaying some wishful thinking publicly – even though he may very well be looked at by Marvel as a possibility at some point in the future, I just can’t see them going with him in the end. Looking at the pictures (one shown below) of Captain America, as well as taking into account the character’s attributes and essence, Tatum just doesn’t embody him.

It’ll be interesting to see if they go with a popular and famous actor like Will Smith or Brad Pitt (with the latter, I’m just throwing in a famous name – I actually think Pitt would be a great choice for the other yet-to-be-cast Avenger known as Thor), or with a no-name like they did with Brandon Routh in Superman Returns. If they did go down the latter route, it may benefit our being able to buy into the actor at hand as the Captain.
So who do you think should play Captain America? Do you think Tatum is a good choice, and will he even get a shot at the role?
The First Avenger: Captain America is out on July 22nd, 2011.

NOT TATUM,
Please Marval Why has no one on your staff thought yet of..
..
..
Daniel Cudmore!!!
check out his IMDB Page http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1214436/
Colossus as Capt.? Could work, as long as the comic fanboys can separate the two. Cudmore would look strange as a blonde and we don’t really know about his acting ability since Colossus didn’t do much acting in X-Men.
Tatum as Capt.? HECK NO!
Well if we are going to go with an American actor(which we damn well better), I think Tatum could do alright. He looks like he has the build, it would just be if he looks the part in the suit and can deliver a good enough acting performance, and I’ve seen him in Coach Carter and thought he showed some potential. Although I say go with a somewhat known actor like Tatum or go with a no-name like how they went with Brandon Routh for Superman.
Colossus is Canadian! Nice! Shea, good call on Daniel Cudmore.
haha, I joked about John Cena as Steve Rogers in the previous Expendables thread but now I see it here on this post and thinking about it, Cena as Captain America can work.
He already has the build, he can do all the physical stunts which is a plus, he has the chiseled look, and he’s already portrayed as the All-American.
I don’t want to hear trash like “no wrestlers!”/”wrestlers can’t act!” First off, it is not easy to go out into the middle of the ring in front of 30 Thousand + and ’sell’ a story/fued on live TV. Yes I agree some of them are terrible and all, but lets take for example some one from a different venue that went into acting. Take a look at Whalburg, the guy rapped about good vibrations & modelled for Calvin Klein. Now he is one of the biggest stars, has one of the biggest shows based on his life and gets an Oscar nod, which in my opinion was total BS but still, you get the idea.
When did the director get announced? I can’t believe Marvel would get a guy like Kenneth Branagh to direct Thor, and Joe Johnston to direct Cap. They’re not exactly in the same league…
Anywho, no way do I want Tatum for Cap. Jason Lewis looks the part, but I’ve only ever seen him in guest spots on TV.
So what if he is Canadian,
Christian Bale is English he did Bruce Wayne…
And i never imagined Cena as Steve, Sorry…
Channing Tatum can’t act his way out of a paper bag, I think it will be a BIG mistake to cast him. John Cena, same thing (can’t act). Yeah he’s built, but he’s built like a body builder (which he aspires to be), not the agile, lean and muscular Captain American from the comic books. Furthermore, and this is coming from a flaming heterosexual, Cena is butt ugly…I always thought of Cap A as a handsome built All American guy. Not a roided up wrestler.
Matthew is the only one that makes sense so far, not perfect but he can pull it off for sure. He looks like an all American, spot on physique as Cap, etc.
i don’t want Cena because I’ve seen his movie “the marine” and he didn’t do that great of a job, he has a lot of pluses: huge body, overall military look, stunts work. but he kind of has a dick-ish demeanor. aggressive but not in the Captain America way, he’d be good for other action movies but not Cap.
I really haven’t seen anyone who could portray Steve Rogers, but then again I don’t have the recourses that studios and casting directors have.
Brad Pitt seems like the obvious choice, but that might not be a good thing.
Also I see nothing wrong with someone of a non American decent playing Cap. Who cares they’re actors, they don’t have to have lived the characters life to play them.
As long as a job is well done I could care less what their country of origin is. (Thor doesn’t have to be played by an actual Viking)
I’d suggest Ryan McPartlin. He has the looks, build and voice. He’s on the TV show Chuck.
@ No Name Face
Ok, now I don’t have a problem with an English actor playing Bruce Wayne/Batman if they do it well, because Christian Bale has done great in that role. I actually don’t have a problem with an actor from a different country playing any kind of superhero. BUT, if we were going to force a superhero to be played by an American actor I’d say Captain America is that superhero. TBH, I don’t know jack about Captain America, I was into Batman and Spider-man but mostly sports growing up so I didn’t get too much into comic books, although I love the movies they are coming out with. But come on, he’s got the word America in his freaking name.
I say that the only way we decide to use an non-American actor to play Captain America is if there is absolutely no one we can find one to play him. But we already have choices like McConaughey and Tatum. I actually like Tatum as the choice, he is one of the younger choices and he’s got, or at least can get, the build to play him so I think we can give him a shot unless someone better comes along. I’m probably being more optimistic though of people’s acting abilities because I was pissed when I found out Ledger was going to play the Joker, but boy was I wrong. Since then I’ve been much more willing to give people a chance on roles, but that may just be me.
Tatum as Capt would be horrible, first I cant stand that he talks like hes from Harlem or something, wtf, I cant stand this kid. I think Cpt needs to be a man, be strong, kinda able to play Old Timey, etc. someone else said Matt Daemon, that seems like a 10x better choice.
Tatum and Cena get a huge ‘NO’ from me as a fan of Cap. The actor whom plays Steve Roger has to be able to hold he’s on own on the silversreen with also RDJ, Sam Jackson, Don Cheadle, and maybe Edward Norton! My favorite choose are:
1. Matt Damon (Bourne trilogy)
2. Steve Worthington (Terminator:Salvation, Avatar)
3. Brad Pitt
4. Pine (New Star Trek)
Sorry, Marvel will NOT pick Tatum or Cena for Captian America. This role was to be a homerun…and those two actors are only base hits.
sorry…
2. Sam Worthington not Steve Worthington
This might be a little crazy and i guess late… But dolph lundgren how he looked in rocky 4. To me that would be an awesome captain america to me. Funny though on how nobody has said anything about smith playing capt.
Wait until G.I. Joe is released. If he nails Duke, then he would definitely fit in as Cap.
Gabriel Macht (the Spirt) would do a good job as Cap… too bad he was in that crappy a movie, gees!
I think that Tatum would do well as Capt. He actually is a good actor, you just have to bypass some of the crap movies he’s been in. He was excellent in “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” with Shia LaBouf and Robert Downey Jr. I would rather they not go with a really big name actor for Capt. either way though. I’ll trust Marvel to do right by one of there most well known characters.
Guys, I think we should give Tatum some more thought. This summer he is supposedly in a somewhat important role in Public Enemies, I’ve seen his name on a poster and it’s high on the hast list, right after Depp and Bale in fact, but I haven’t seen him at all in the trailers except they mention his character’s name.(Pretty Boy Floyd)
I say, lets keep an eye out for him during Public Enemies, if he can stand his ground with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, I’d say he can do it acting wise. Also, like Wes said, let’s wait and see how he does in G.I. Joe and if he does well we’ll know if he can do his part action-guy wise. If he does well in those two movies, I think he should be given a serious audition or whatever. But again, I seem to be the only one who thinks he can do it, guess it’s just my optimism.
I’ve said it before and I will say it again,IMHO I think Jason O’Mara from Life On Mars would make a great Cap.I think he would encompass not only the look of Steve Rogers but also his persona as well.
What we don’t need is someone in the role just throwing out catch phrases. We need someone to bring some weight, someone who can help convey to the audience what Captain America is all about.I think Jason O’Mara could do that.
Three really poopy casting rumors today!!!
April 14th Shall Be known henceforth as Screenrant Poopy Casting Rumor Day!!!
to those who want Cena to play captain america
why would they cast someone who cant act and isnt even actor? hes a wrestler not an actor
Actually, some of these aren’t half bad suggestions. Depending on how Public Enemies and G.I. Joe go, I guess Tatum could be a stretch.
Damon, I guess, if we built him up a bit, he definitely has the acting and action chops.
Cena is a definite no. It’s not the fact that he can’t act on TV, on any wrestling program. That’s different. Watch one of his movies, its purely excruciating.
I’m definitely intrigued by O’Mara, I had never heard of him before, he looks the part, but I don’t know any of his parts-Albert Wesker is a favorite character of mine, but the Res E movies were atrocious. I never managed to finish Band of Brothers, its on my list.
wat about justin hartly, from smallville. he plays the green arrow. blonde blue-eyes just needs to get a little bigger. i think he’d be a good fit
I have to agree in this case that all-American needs to be a given. No foreigners for this role – nothin against them; just not for this character.
for those that said Daniel Cudmore, he’s like 6ft 8in. Way to tall and big for Cap America, plus that would make him taller than any Thor actor!
As much as I like the guy, I don’t like Tatum for the role. And Will Smith can’t be Hancock AND the Captain?
I like the idea of McConaughey MUCH more than Cena simply because he has a lot of experience, and he’s blonde. I’m no movie expert, but I think Pitt would be great for Thor, if he can get back into Troy shape.
CENA IS CAP! -Stark
Let’s see how Channing does in G.I. Joe, before saying that he’s a bad choice.
The only problem that I have with him is that he seems too thin, he would need to bulk up a bit.
Adrian has a serious point and as much as I too would like to see an unknown play as Captain America, it just would not work. People keep bringing up the fact of how well unknowns have done like Christopher Reeves for Superman and Christian Bale for Batman but what you all don’t consider is that each character, Superman & Batman had already been household names for at least 60 years or more a even before their movies. They were already famous so it was safer to use unknowns. On the other hand Captain America has been around at least 60 years but he is not a household name nor has he ever been as famous as Superman or Batman. So it is not safe to use an unknown for a basically unknown it lessens the “Blockbuster” & “BUTTS IN SEATS” factor. Only a more obscure(other dimensional/god/size & stature) and difficult character to cast such as Thor actually SHOULD be done by an unknown (Alexander Skarsgard). Brad Pitt is the ideal actor to play as Captain America and NO he is not too old besides the fact that we live in an age of technology that could make Brad Pitt look 17 years old or younger again. Brad Pitt IS the “all American” guy(nothing to do with race) he is a humanitarian and sometimes has issues with his own Government and country JUST LIKE CAPTAIN AMERICA TOO!!! Captain America isn’t some flag toting blind folded patriot. Captain America stands for the values that this country was founded on not just following political orders blindly. So leave the unknown actor for a Captain America t.v. series, it could be like “24″ Meets “Mcguiver” and Mark Valley would have that HANDS DOWN!!! Besides it would be highly disrespectful and visually awkward on screen and off, to have some unknown leading the already A-list cast. Besides Brad Pitt already has good chemistry with Edward Norton, imagine him with the rest. Academy Award winning potential all the way.
