The upcoming Avengers film will see four (or more) Marvel superheroes team-up together including Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America. The wheels have already started turning to bring these four heroes together, with the latter two still sans an actor to portray them.
Concentrating on The First Avenger: Captain America – a director has already been signed on in the form of Joe Johnston (Jumanji, Jurassic Park III and Hidalgo… ouch…), Narnia writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely nabbed to pen the script, and a release date of July 22nd, 2011 set (pushed back from the original May 6th, 2011 date).
Now, as I said, all we need is an actor to dawn the stars-and-striped suit, and pick up that famous shield. So who could play the Captain? Well, how ’bout G.I. Joe star Channing Tatum?

It was rumored a while ago (one which seems to rear it’s head almost like clockwork every so often) that Will Smith was going to play the Marvel hero, but that rumor has officially been debunked. Which is great news for Tatum, as Smith’s possible involvement seemed to be the only thing holding him back from pursuing the role:
“I would love to talk about it… When I’d heard that Will Smith was [interested], I’m just like, ‘God, yeah. That’s who should play it… It would be a different Captain America than we all know in the comic, but it’s perfect.”
MTV reminds us that Smith isn’t the only rumored actor to portray the Captain – Matthew “Dude!” McConaughey has been repeatedly brought up in fan message boards as a possible candidate, as well as wrestling star John Cena.
Of course this is just one actor displaying some wishful thinking publicly – even though he may very well be looked at by Marvel as a possibility at some point in the future, I just can’t see them going with him in the end. Looking at the pictures (one shown below) of Captain America, as well as taking into account the character’s attributes and essence, Tatum just doesn’t embody him.

It’ll be interesting to see if they go with a popular and famous actor like Will Smith or Brad Pitt (with the latter, I’m just throwing in a famous name – I actually think Pitt would be a great choice for the other yet-to-be-cast Avenger known as Thor), or with a no-name like they did with Brandon Routh in Superman Returns. If they did go down the latter route, it may benefit our being able to buy into the actor at hand as the Captain.
So who do you think should play Captain America? Do you think Tatum is a good choice, and will he even get a shot at the role?
The First Avenger: Captain America is out on July 22nd, 2011.

John Cena… NO, Channing Tatum…NO, I like the idea of matt damon being on. That sounds good. And as for Matt McConaughey for Cap…Hell NO! He’d be better as the Sentry from the avengers.
i just saw the trailer for the new Fox show “Human Target” staring Mark Valley. I’m with gunsmith on this one. Mark would be a Cap. but Hollywood might think that he is too old at 45. Human Target looks like its going to be a good show if Fox doesn’t screw it up like they have done to all of there other great shows. the only two good shows that they have not screwed up are X Files and Bones.
I’LL JUST SAY THIS, MARK VALLEY IS THE PERFECT CHOICE FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA-MARK VALLEY HAD A COUPLE EPISODED ON FRINGE AND WILL BE THE STAR IN THE UPCOMING TV SERIES HUMAN TARGET..HE HAS THE LOOK…GET HIM
If Paul Walker could act better he would be a good choice for CAptain America. If Matt Damon was taller, he woudl also be a great choice. Same thing with the blonde dude, Dean, from Supernatural. If he was taller he would make an excellent choice, but even so I still think they coudl work with him…he’s proven to be an excellent actor but he would definetely have to bulk up for teh role and the camera men would have to manipulate teh camera to make him look taller.
I am personally very interested and excited about this movie. If done correctly, this could turn out to be a great film and the idea of keeping the movie set in teh past during the war is a great idea. I see this movie turning out to be a Bourne Identity-type of superhero movie. Please, PLEASE dont bring in a ton of supoerhero’s and ruin the movie, like in Xmen:Wolverine. Only person I could really see doing a cameo is a young Magneto, because if you remember from X-men he was held captive in a concentration camp.
I think the whole AVENGERS idea is going to blow up in Marvel’s face. Too many superhero’s in one movie never tends to be a good idea. There will be too much going on and the movie wont have time to focus on any chracter development.
@tasouli
I doubt Magneto nor Wolverine would be in the Cap movie because they are owned by Fox. The X-men 1 and 2 did well and they are a group of superheroes. I think Avengers could do very well as long as they face off against one villain; say, the Hulk.
Very good point about x-men 1/2…I still dont see the Avengers working…I believe that the plot of the movie will actually be the Avengers going after the Hulk…
The Hulk is an Avenger.
Where the Incredible Hulk left off was with the premise that Banner was starting to get the transformation under control so I think this would seem to indicate that Hulk will be on the Avengers team and not an enemy
if they follow the comics, at all…the Hulk is an enemy, before he becomes an Avenger
Hulk was an avenger before Cap.
you are correct…http://marvel.com/universe/Avengers
I’d like to say if not John Cena to play Captain America, another good choice to me would be that guy who played A.C AKA. Aquaman on Smallville in a few episodes. He looks like hes tall enough, well built, and aside of him having blonde hair i bet he could actually talk like Capt would as a soldier. Marvel should atleast ask him for a screening.
Another choice i thought of to play Captain America is Adam Baldwin. anyone know him or his movies? Im not sure hold he is now but his voice would make him sound perfect for the role. Plus, he too was at good height and built in the movies i seen him in.
Sorry i mis-spelled, but i meant to say i wasnt sure how old he is now.
I’m a huge Adam Baldwin fan. he was already a super soldier on the X-files.
@ Carlton
Im a Adam Baldwin fan myself and i liked him in films like Predator 2, Independance Day. He was great at voicing Superman in Superman: Doomsday aswell as Hal Jordan cameo in JLU. LOL i liked how he talked to Deadshot as Rick Flagg when he said, (( 5 years, you do this work for 5 years. If you survive, then you go free. Some of us doesnt have to be blackmailed into serving their country)). Adam Baldwin should atleast be considered by Marvel.
Adam is also really good on the TV show “Chuck.” he’s really good at playing the patriot.
Channing as Capt. Amer? Umm, I like him but I think he’s too young, maybe. I think Jensen Ackles(aka- Dean on Supernatural) would be freakin’ fantastic and it’s not just cuz I am a huge Jensen fan. Matthew McConoghey(hoped I spelled that right) or John Cena would be the worst decisions ever! Adam Baldwin would be pretty cool. But what about David Boreanaz?
I can see Channing Tantum as Cap. Cap needs to be young not like McConoghey or Baldwin. He was a college age kid who wanted to do something for the war effort after seeing a news reel at the theater about the Red Skull. But being frail the Army said no, but a Scientist or Gov. Official saw the possibility in this kid for the super soldier experiment.
Who ever is cast needs to be relativly young, and a body like the Rock would be nice. As of Will Smith he can be used in the movie as a young Nick Fury since he is now being portrayed as a Samual Jackson look alike
