Channing Tatum in Negotiations to Produce and Star In Evel Knievel Movie

Published 2 years ago by , Updated July 19th, 2013 at 12:20 pm,

As kids a lot of us would take our bikes out to the front of our houses or apartment buildings, set up some sort of makeshift ramp, rev the bike like a motorcycle and make the jump. In the end, the reality is that you probably didn’t even clear that much distance – but in your mind, you were Evel Knievel for that short period of time.

Speaking of Evel Knievel, it’s being reported that Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street) has entered negotiations to produce and star in a film about the world of the famous daredevil. According to the reports, the film will be written by Reid Carolin (Magic Mike) and will be based on Stuart Barker’s Knievel autobiographym Life of Evel.

Tatum has been on quite the roll since 21 Jump Street. Recently he starred in Magic Mike (read our review here), and there are rumors that the real reason G.I. Joe: Retaliation was pushed back until the spring of 2013 was to expand his role after the original script called for Tatum to be killed off in the opening minutes. Aside from G.I. Joe 2, you will also be able to catch Tatum in the forthcoming films Foxcatcher and White House Down (also set for release in 2013).

For those unaware of who Evel Knievel is: he was daredevil extraordinaire during the mid-60s and 70s. During his lifetime, Knievel attempted over 75 ramp-to-ramp jumps, including jumping as many as 19 cars with a Harley Davidson in Houston, Texas. Knievel is also the Guinness World Book record holder for most bones broken in a lifetime (as many as 433). He passed away in 2007 due to a declining health.

So the next time you attempt to jump Hot Wheel cars in your driveway, just think about what it must have felt like for Evel Knievel when he was making the leap over actual vehicles – and then take a minute to think about the incredible leap that Channing Tatum’s career has taken ever since 21 Jump Street. Wouldn’t you just love to be Channing Tatum’s agent right now?

Whether or not negotiations hold up and Tatum signs on, and whether or not the title Life of Evel sticks as the films title remains to be seen. Continue to check back with Screen Rant for further details regarding the project.

  1. I bet Ari Gold is his hollywood agent. I can see him just screaming “LLLOOOOYYYDDD” while selling him on the “Barbie and Ken” movie that eventually he will make.

  2. Thanks to today’s CGI technology they can finally bring Evel to the big screen.

  3. Evel Knievel deserves a lot better than Channing Tatum.

    • Yes, he does.

    • On the upside, maybe he’ll do his own stunts. :)

      • Ummhhh thats mean a’f he is osoo sexy and you are just jealous tht he makes your gf scream louder than you do!I love him and i assume he is much sexier than you!!!

  4. This is just wrong on so many levels. If this happens Evelyn just might come back from the dead to kick somebody’s @$$.

    • *sigh* Evel not Evelyn, auto correct ruins yet another post.

  5. You had me at Evel Knievel. You lost me at Channing Tatum.

IMO Pine, Fassbender or just about ANYONE, for that matter, could pull it off ALOT better.

  6. Miserable idea.

Sam Rockwell as evel knievel. Case closed.

  7. This news would make Super Dave cringe….

    • ^like

  8. No. Just no.

  9. If Channing Tatum is truly intelligent and has done his research, he’ll cast his Magic Mike co-star Matthew McConaughey as Evel Knievel. Knievel has an country boy swagger that McConaughey already carries, plus they look alot alike especially at this age. This could be a great chance for him to show his skills. After seeing his speech at the MTV moive awards he’s definitely the RIGHT actor for this not Tatum.

  10. This is really depressing news… they might as well have cast good ole nicholas cage.

    • What, as the grandfather?! :-D

  11. Well, is anyone really surprised at this ? It’s Hollywood for you…when a star is hot, they’ll cast him or her in anything. As long as they draw in the crowds, that’s all that matters

  12. What is it with Channing Tatum, I believe he is a face and body but cant act, and now he is also producing?? Above comment from Robert Palmer is so ‘on the money’!!

    • I guess it depends on what you mean by “producing”. Obviously him producing is not quite the same as your classic producers like Silver or Bruckheimer producing. It’s a similar path that most actors have taken. Once they get some success, they want to start producing their own movies. Either strictly for profit, or because they now the clout to push through project that interest them artistically, either to star in themselves or to give an opportunity to someone else.
Evel Knievel is such an iconic, bigger-than-life, cultural icon that it would be truly difficult to find the right actor to play him. I doubt Tatum will accept the producing role if he doesn’t also want be cast as Knievel also. But then again, it would be huge if he had the stones to pass the role to someone else.
