Midseason Schedule Shift: CBS Moves ‘Blue Bloods’ & ‘The Defenders’

CBS Blue Bloods Midseason Schedule Shift: CBS Moves Blue Bloods & The Defenders

CBS has been pretty lucky this season. Unlike its rival networks, which have had to cut mediocre shows (and even some good ones), CBS has had the luxury of keeping all of its new shows on the air. In fact, the network has found enough success with its lineup of programs that it now has the luxury to spice things up a bit with new scheduling.

In a recent news release, CBS announced that it was moving the relatively popular cop drama Blue Bloods from its Friday night slot to Wednesday nights at 10:00 pm for a four-week run beginning January 19th.

Given the fact that Friday is a weaker night for TV competition, CBS is testing whether Blue Bloods‘ success (it was number one among 25-54-year-olds in its former timeslot) can carry over to a more prominent day. As I wrote in my review of the premiere episode of Blue Bloods, the show definitely offered a lot of potential and it seems to have lived up to that potential so far this season.

After Blue Bloods completes its four-week run, CBS will swap it out for the debut of the new Criminal Minds spinoff, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, which stars Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker and Janeane Garofalo. Suspect Behavior will debut immediately following the original Criminal Minds, which is a smart strategy for engaging original franchise fans with the spin-off.

The one show that gets the shaft in the CBS schedule shuffle is the legal comedy/drama The Defenders, starring Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell as Las Vegas defense attorneys. While popular among its fans, The Defenders has had a tougher time finding a mainstream audience. The show would still be considered a success on another network, but for CBS it’s the weak link, which is why it’s getting moved to the lower profile 8:00 PM Friday night timeslot.

  1. So they have a successful show in Blue Bloods (which I really like) and they’re going to start playing with its time slot? I hope it doesn’t mess up the show.

    • Ok you just get used to Blue Bloods being on at a certain time, get settled in, and BAM they move it . What is up with that? Dont understant that line of thought. They are gonna lose viewers messing with time slots!

  2. There has been some speculation CBS might turn Friday In to a night for non scripted programs(Reality shows)
It is believed they moved BB because they want to see if it will survive on another night.

  3. Please don’t mess up Blue Bloods

  4. Why do networks mess with time slots?? I know that “strategy” has failed in the past and good shows were cancelled!

  5. If you were a FAN of LOST on ABC, the introduction of Blue Bloods on CBS in a simular time slot is a great idea! Two amazing shows that compliment eachother with a LOST riddle. The character Kate in LOST had a lunchbox with one of the members of The Reagan Family…
Join in on the fun, anytime is a great time to celebrate television and add a brand new season of Blue Bloods!

  6. I like the Defenders, but am never home on Fri. night so will have to record this great show. Hope it doesn’t get canceled.

  7. why do you move shows around i love bue bloods but when you start moving shows arounds you tend to lose me because i forget it changed so i miss it and then just give up

  8. I’ve been looking for Blue Bloods, thought maybe it was cancelled!!! Very disappointed with day change. I looked forward to something good on Fridays finally!!!! If we can’t find it how can we watch it!!! KEEP IT SIMPLE PLEASE:)))))

  9. Like Blue Bloods but LOVE the Defenders and will greatly miss Medium. And I would love it if they would cancel all the crappy spinoffs of CSI.

  10. Geez, is it just us? We liken “Criminal Minds” to watching paint dry, but REALLY enjoy “The Defenders” and “Blue Bloods”. If you have to move it, put “The Defenders” in front of “The Mentalist” – another fun show. But to bury it on Friday night with CSI is a show-killer. Gads.

  11. I can’t believe they think Forest Whitiker can portray an inteligent investigator. He looks so dopey. I really can’t stand to watch him. I hope the show is a flop.

  12. I love Blue Bloods, Why must you keep changing it around? Another “Criminal Minds?” Come on. Give me back the Reagan family on Wednesday. Nothing else worth watching

  13. I love Blue Bloods…stop messing with the time slot.

  14. For God’s sake you get a winner (BB) and you start monkeying with it so we have to be as good as Danny at investigating where it is THIS WEEK. Keep it up and I’m outa here!!!!!

  15. For real,Blue Bloods is one of the best police shows on tv…and the ONLY reason to watch tv an wednesday night beside modern family…PLEASE PLEASE bring it back to wednesday and PLEASE don’t let it be cancelled….

  16. Why are you messing around with Blue Bloods? Wish it was still on Wednesday nights because my husband has to work Friday nights. This show has a great combination of family togetherness and a police whodunit. Also, love the Defenders.

  17. So you have a good show portraying policemen and their families as good, honest, decent people of integrity and you must screw around with it. In favor of what? Another show that will weekly delve into torture, sadism, voyeurism, etc. Crimeny.

  18. Bluebloods is the best show on any of the networks.

  19. This household will watch no program starring Janeane Garofalo. Blue Bloods is an excellent program…leave it too the so called experts to screw with success.

  20. I don’t understand why there is any question about “BLUE BLOODS”. It is one of the best family shows on television. It’s clean, it’s honest and it shows some of the truest family values that have been missing from television in the last twenty years. Come on!!! Give us some good television for us to watch with our families.
    THANKS!

    • I AGREE WITH YOU……. I ALWAYS LOOKED FORWARD FOR BLUE BLOODS ON FRIDAY NIGHTS…… I REALLY MISS IT ..!!!!!!

  21. I have been watching Blue Bloods since it began. It is one of better show on TV. You can never go wrong when Tom Selleck is on the show. Look at the success of Magnum, PI Keep it on Friday nights. Quit changing days, this is one way of losing your important audience. The same goes with CSI NY.

    A loyal follower from Canada.

  22. It doesn’t matter what day because I always record them. But January is almost unbearable for Criminal Minds And Blue Bloods!
