2009 CBS Fall TV Line Up: No ‘Eleventh Hour’

With the CBS 2009 season, we have a few favorites coming back, a show that changed networks and night and a huge gamble that paid out less than the California lottery.

The shows that got the digital advertisers ax were Eleventh Hour, Harper’s Island, The Unit, Without a Trace and Worst Week.

I’m bummed The Unit was cut and surprised by Harper’s Island lack of viewers.  Harper’s was well written compared to some but I guess viewers just don’t have the patience for murder-mystery dramas.  I have to admit, my first reaction was flat to the idea but I gave it a chance, got hooked and now, got disappointed.  Grr.

One of the most expensive television shows ever produced, Eleventh Hour, apparently was just as flat as I felt it was when I watched the first few episodes.  It never snagged me and seemed what I call OTTO (over the top obvious) in how they initially delivered their character introductions.  Shows that go OTTO on me usually lose me.  I’d rather see compelling story up front and slowly let the characters demonstrate who they are over time.  When I see OTTO, I always fear the show runners are scared about their stories and try to pump us full of concern for the 2-D characters right up front.

The NCIS spin-off called NCIS: Los Angeles is right behind NCIS on Tuesdays.  CBS also moved their huge hit, The Mentalist to Thursday nights which is bad news for the other networks.

The much anticipated Alex O’Loughlin drama 3 Rivers will be airing on Sundays between Amazing Race and Cold Case.

Medium was sent packing at NBC, but CBS snatched it up and is now going to air it on Fridays following Ghost Whisperer.  That should be a great combination of shows.  At least they’re not going to have two 30-minute, unrelated genre shows like comedies be their lead-in.

If you look closely, Flashpoint, which hooked me in one episode, is not mentioned as being canceled or renewed.  It’s in limbo, or more accurately, it will air during the summer time.  Along with Friday nights, the summer season is almost the worst for TV shows.  Most networks don’t air new shows they want to succeed during the summer…  it’s like a really long drawn out Friday to them.

Mid season shows that are coming at us that aren’t on the list below are:

The Bridge: Is about a tough and dedicated police officer who is voted to become the police union’s dynamic leader. It stars Aaron Douglas, of Battlestar Galactica fame.

Miami Trauma:  Is about a team of expert surgeons who work at one of the premiere trauma facilities in the country, where only patients with life threatening injuries are treated.  It will star Jeremy Northam.

  1. What, the Unit is gone? Shame!

  2. any idea how many episodes medium was picked up for?

  3. I’ll check on it Jimmy.

  4. I think Leno is going to get his butt kicked by the CBS lineup of 10pm shows.

  5. No more Eleventh Hour? Oh, well, one less hour of network TV to watch. Now I’m down to 1/2 hour.

  6. What are you talking about with Harper’s Island? The show is a one and done of 13 episodes, so it isn’t possible to get picked up for another season, and it hasn’t been pulled. It was off last Saturday, but that was preplanned, and it is back this Saturday.

Unless you have some other information, but CBS is currently claiming it’s on Saturday.

  7. Marc,

Yes, your perspective is technically correct and I’m sort of confused too.

It was a 13 epi shot. Yes, they’re letting it run out its 13 epi’s on Saturdays but with very little support. The studio’s are calling it canceled. Which I guess means maybe someone was toying with the idea of more seasons if it payed off.

If a Prison Break can go on for 4 seasons, heck, anything is possible.

  8. The plan was to bring Back Harpers Island with a different mystery and different characters if it took off.

  9. Well, I’m not still not sure what “canceled” means, and I didn’t hear anybody call it canceled. And, on Gary’s comment, I talked to Turteltaub, and he was pretty solidly on the idea that it was a one shot deal. Maybe the network was going to go with it or something, but how would it make any sense?

  10. The idea was to do a different 13 part anthology in that slot.
As I said they were not going to bring back the same storyline or characters
It would be another 13 part story that ends in the 13th week.

  11. well seeing as you were taking so long i researched it myself… it’s coming back for 21 episodes! YES! better than the 13 NBC wanted to give it that’s for sure!

  12. You’d think CBS (or, for that matter, any network) would be making enough off Survivor, and any of the other non-”acted” shows, like 60 Minutes and 48 Hours, that they could support the rest of the week’s shows that have actual acting in them.

  13. CBS. Home and hope of the spinoffs.

  14. CBS may have been shortsighted enough to cancel Eleventh Hour, but the Campaign to bring it back is not over. If you love EH like we do, check out this new link at our new site. There are still possibilities to save this show but we need each and every fan to help! CBS is not the only network out there, and there are also wonderful cable stations such as TNT and USA. Let’s find out which one is smart enough to grab this show up!

  16. Kellie,
last I heard the cast was looking for work.
    Its over.
    Let it go.

  17. Gary,

Thanks for the laugh. I love rude people!

  18. I do not think any one has the right to tell anyone else to let anything go. CBS ignored 12 million fans and really never gave the 11th Hour a decent chance. I am part of a campaign to bring that show back. People look for work when networks cancel their show. They find work when the show is reinstated. I do not think this will happen at CBS but I am not sure it will not happen elsewhere.

  19. Gary,

Of course the actors are looking for work …. that’s what actors do..ummm they “work”.

Just because Rufus Sewell does a movie for a few months has absolutely no bearing at all on his possible availability for returning to Eleventh Hour at a later time if it gets picked up by another network.

I for one wont “let it go” because I feel strongly that Eleventh Hour deserves more, and all the show’s 12 million viewers do as well.

  20. The oddball thing about ELEVENTH HOUR is how well it WAS doing as far as capturing viewers because 10mil+ is not something to sneeze at, and CBS was using a poor excuse for cutting it.

I think it would have been much more up front if CBS had just come out and said it was too costly for them. (At least that’s my suspicion.)

  21. I am from UK and Eleventh Hour is being aired at the moment. This is a great show, very different from the usual ‘drivel’ that we see. I cannot believe EH was cancelled by CBS, especially with such great viewing figures of 12 million each week!! They cancelled in the end due to financial concerns? Their loss I think. The show deserves to be picked up by another network and given a real chance to flourish because in my opinion, it is an intelligent and thought provoking show, something of which I have not seen for a very long time; 12 million people each week could not be wrong either in their choice of viewing, you don’t get those kind of figures for nothing.

  22. Bruce ,
I got the feeling it was a budget thing too.

  23. I am also involved in the Eleventh Hour Resurrection Campaign, because the show is well worth it. CBS really screwed up on cutting this one.

  25. I am so excited!!!! I loved Medium, but it was on too late for a Monday, but I can see my two favorite shows now on Friday! Ghost Whisperer and Medium! This is the best news ever.

  26. I’M SO GLAD THAT CBS PICKED UP MEDIUM, I TRULY LOVE THIS SHOW AND LOOK FORWARD TO IT EVERY YEAR, THANK YOU CBS.

  27. eleventh hour and the unit were both great shows and should
    have been put back on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. I’m still not over the cancellation of Joan of Arcadia and American Dream. Now I have to contend with the cancellations of Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader and Life on Mars. Thank goodness CBS picked up Medium. I love that show.

  29. Very disappointed that a thought provoking show (Eleventh Hour) was taken off the air. Instead they leave some hair brain shows instead. Makes absolutely no sense to me.
