Amidst the flurry of announcements from all the major networks, CBS has finally let its cancellation plans be known. Comedies $#*! My Dad Says and Mad Love as well as courtroom drama The Defenders will not be returning in the fall.

So far in the 2011 pilot season, CBS has both added and subtracted the least amount of shows among the big four networks. This shouldn’t come as a surprise – CBS regularly leads the ratings race, and therefore has less reason to make the kind of sweeping changes that both Fox and NBC announced last week.

The Defenders is, or was, a courtroom comedy/drama starring comedy veteran Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell. The two are a pair of defense attorneys never lacking for clients in Sin City. The Defenders delivered a one-two punch of laughs and suspense that, apparently, viewers still managed to dodge. The last episode delivered just north of 8 million viewers (low by CBS’ standards), down 30% from the series premiere.

Mad Love featured  former Scrubs actress Sarah Chalke. Judy Greer (Archer‘s Cheryl), as well as Jason Biggs – and Tyler Labine rounded out a foursome of 30ish New York City chums looking for love in the Big Apple. Last week’s episode delivered 5.1 million viewers, a series low. The finale will air tonight at 8:30.

Easily the most puzzling of CBS’ cancelled shows is $#*! My Dad Says. While the William Shatner vehicle was no prize with the critics (and Screen Rant was no exception), it regularly scored high ratings to the tune of ten million viewers or more. Then again, the finale scored a mere 2.6 million in the 18-49 demo, oddly sliding away from the Twitter target audience.

To fill at least one empty spot in the lineup, CBS has ordered a new thriller from J.J. Abrams and Jonathan Nolan and a Whitney Cummings comedy. Person of Interest will star James Caviezel, while Broke Girls stars Kat Dennings. Expect at least a few more shows to be picked up in the next week or so.

  1. Ahh, The Defenders was another show I actually liked and watched, one of the only shows I watch(ed) on CBS at all.

  2. Loved the Defenders. Seems when I like a program poof it’s gone.

the elderly crowd, but I spent 65 years in the radio and TV business as on air talent and as a manager and creator. My hope is that another network will pick up the show and give it a chance. The Defenders has humor, intrigue, good acting, good scripts and deserves to be seen.

    • i agree that the defenders should be renewed but there is a few good reality tv shows like survivor and big brother that are being renewed for good reasons because a lot of people still watch them and more people than neanderthals would watch them

  4. I’m so sad CBS cancelled the “Defenders”!!! It was such a great show that my whole family enjoyed! I hope it gets picked up by another Network, it would be a shame to say good bye to such a great show!
Shame on CBS!!! Just when you fall in Love with a show, they go and take it off the air! WHY?????

  5. DEFENDERS?????? Are you kidding me CBS????? This year TV finally had some excellent shows like this and they are being cancelled, but yet the ignorant reality shows continue to be renewed. I do not understand it at all. Bleep, my Dad says is also cancelled which was a good show but yet The Middle was renewed and it is about the dumbest show I have seen in a long time. NOT FUNNY!!!

    • You do realize that “*&!$ my Dad Says” and “The Middle” are on 2 different networks and have nothing to do with each other, right?

  6. I hope another network picks up The Defenders. Per CBS standards it wasn’t bringing unblock ratings just over 8 mill viewers. I wonder if ABC or some cable network will pick it up. It’s s shame CBS felt the ratings were too low for them. This show will be missed.

  7. I loved “The Defenders”, it was a great show and fun to watch. I can’t believe CBS cancelled it and kept other shows that should have gone!!!!

  8. My husband and I am so disappointed CBS is canceling two of our favorites. The Defenders and The My Dad Says..We seldom see good acting, great script writing and pure entertainment.. WHY would you cancel these two shows when they deliver such great entertainment. If the ratings go down a little, just hang in there, the word will get out. What’s amazing is, our friends agree with us and especially look forward to Friday nights, nothing else is on worth watching.
BIG Mistake on your part to cancel these two shows.

    Dale and Jewell

  9. I was a big fan of The Defenders. It was one of the very few shows I would actually watch.

And so now CBS has greenlit a new show, Two Broke Girls, which is about two idiots in New York, starring Kat Dennings, and it also has some racially stereotyped Korean character who goes by the name “Rice Lee,” and speaks in broken English. Much of the scenes with him involve the two main characters making fun of him and how he speaks, and trying to correct him on his oh-so-hilarious ways. Oh, yeah, I’m so sure they’ll be putting their laugh tracks and rimshots to plenty of use.

    • I love the defender I cannot believe they cancled it. it was my favorite show I hope someone else picks it up because I will watch it. it was so funny and they worked so good together. it was the best show on tv I just can’t believe the cancled it. there are so many bad shows on and that was one of the best ones.

  10. What I cannot believe THE DEFENDERS is not coming back what IDIOTS make these MISTAKES… My FAV SHOW …. it is a show for the whole family PLEASE RE THINK YOUR MISTAKE

  11. Once again it just goes to show that the people in the ivory tower are so out of touch. CBS finally got me back watching their shows and then they cancel the show that brought me back. So once again I can say see ya but most likely not.

  12. Noooo, not The Defenders! Of course it will lose audience if it is stuck on the night of death, Friday night! Come on USA? TNT? A&E? Pick the show up for those of us who love it!

  13. CBS must have wanted to the show to fail, probably due to it’s high production cost. It actually did well on Wednesdays, before they moved it to Friday night–where all shows go to die. It’s a shame because it was better and more entertaining than most of the drivel that airs. CBS can’t complain that it underperformed once they moved it. Anyone in the business knows movement during a first season before an audience can be established, is the kiss of death. Should have given it another year in a better slot.

  14. I hate that “The Defenders” is being cancelled. This is a quality show. How can such a thing happen when such junk is left on the air? Bad, bad move!

  15. hmm i thought ratings were what kept shows going.$!I# my dad says averaged around 10 million viewers for each episode with only a little dip for the season/series finale.but i guess ratings dont matter when cbs execs just want to get rid of a show.Probably some whiners out there that didnt like the title or some other bs.Why else would you cancel something so funny?

  16. $#*! My Dad Says was a fun show to watch. I truly enjoyed Shatner doing comedy. He played the character so well.

    Also liked Mad Love.

Sorry to see both these shows go.

  17. The CBS, NBC, and ABC networks wonder why everyone watches cable…this is a perfect example of why; cable plays the reruns of the shows people liked to watch before the major networks cancelled the series, put on junk in its place, and expected the people to watch it. The Defenders was a great show and it appears if the major networks have a great show they dump it to put in some kind of idiotic ‘reality’ (tongue in cheek) show. There was a time in history when television was entertaining…not anymore.

  18. Shame Defenders was cancelled. I hope another network picks it up. I haven’t enjoyed a show this much since Scrubs was still making new episodes. I don’t understand why they moved it to Friday, what’s going on Monday or Tuesday nights? Regardless, I just hope someone else picks up this amazing cast and show.

  19. The Defenders was a great show. The characters have great chemistry. Why do they take off the good shows. Just put it in a better time slot.

  20. We are going to miss Mad Love. On Mondays I make sure we are home in time to watch.

  21. Wow.. Way to ruin my Monday. HIMYM, Mad Love, then The Event, then Hawaii Five-0… 2 out of 4 are gone now. SON OF A b****! Lol I know people didn’t love The Event, but I don’t understand why. People just have to give it a chance JUST like FlashForward.

DONE with new shows. For good.

  22. Be prepared to be with TV altogether. It has so little to offer these days. I tend to watch old shows on TVLand, Hallmark channel and their ilk. Even the movies are few and far. They seem to show the same 25 on TNT, TBS, etc……

What has happened to TV the last 20 years?

  23. I liked The Defenders when it first came on, but then CBS moved it and I lost track of the story arc. Glad to see that Hawaii 5-0 made the cut. I really enjoy that show as well as Blue Bloods.

    • I completely agree! I had to watch The Defenders online to keep up with the show and really enjoyed it! I also love Blue Bloods and Hawaii 5-0

  24. How disappointing to see that Defenders and Off the Map are cancelled, yet totally stupid shows are being renewed. And to think Hawaii 5.0 was a possible cancel too? I don’t know who the TV networks are using for ratings, but I highly recommend they make a change. No show has a chance when you move it to Sunday nights. Defenders cancelled and CSI Miami a possibility. Yet Undercover Boss is renewed seriously???? Very very frustrated!!!

    • The Defenders funny, serious and yet entertaining. Hopefully another network picks it up.

      • TNT picked it up, it’s called Franklin and Bash….

        • Oh, I am so glad! I loved the show and was really going to miss watching it. It is one of 3 shows I watch.

  25. Help Save Mad Love and join the FB group:

  26. OMG, this is getting frustrating. I am still trying to get over Gary Unmarried getting cancelled. Now, this season, my favorite shows have been Big Bang Theory, $#*! My Dad Says, Mad Love, and Chicago Code. Three of my four favorites got axed. WTH is wrong with these networks? Seriously, is there going to be nothing to watch but reality TV anymore?

  27. Finally a show that has heart, makes you laugh and has class. What does CBS do but cancel The Defenders. You had two people who were friends and had troubles that they had to face, and together work on how to work it out in many different ways. Instead they keep How I Met Your Mother that is so dumb that if you had to think to watch it, it would be amazing. I truly hope NBC or ABC picks up The Defenders as it is times like this that we have to laugh and work together.

    • Well, stated I will miss The Defenders! It was one of my favorite shows this past season.

  28. I cannot believe they cancelled Mad Love, I watched it every week. I am not happy…anyway to get it back on the air.
