catwoman costume in the dark knight rises Rumor Patrol: Details of Catwomans Dark Knight Rises Costume

The Dark Knight Rises is probably the most highly-anticipated comic book film of next two years, thanks to the successes of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight (courtesy of director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale).

Yesterday, the second sequel was filming in England, and our own Niall Browne snapped some set photos of the newly-rebuilt Wayne Manor. Today, we have new information regarding the design of Catwoman’s costume – that is, if it turns out to be true. As ever, take every Batman rumor with a grain of salt.

According a Hollywood Life source close to the costume design:

“Anne’s outfit is more tactical, like the comic book, than the previous Batman movies. She will definitely be wearing the goggles and it’s going to be less sexy than Halle Berry and Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman costumes. She’s going to look more like a robber.”

This news isn’t going to surprise anyone even remotely familiar with Nolan’s version of Batman, which has always been geared toward a more “realistic” aesthetic – as superhero films go. And as far as superhero costumes go, Catwoman’s is probably the best equipped to be adapted realistically. Leather jumpsuit. Goggles. Maybe a couple of nondescript cat ears. Done and done!

The source continues:

“But fanboys shouldn’t be worried. This costume is going to be form-fitting enough to make Anne look smoking hot.”

Ah, yes. Because that’s certainly what all fanboys everywhere are most concerned with regarding The Dark Knight Rises: How smoking hot Anne Hathaway is in her Catwoman costume!

As for Hathaway’s portrayal of the cat-like anti-hero, the source says:

“Everything from the looks in her eyes, her head movements, her body–everything is so feline. The role is taking her to new places.”

Really? Now this we find hard to believe. Based entirely on Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, it seems unlikely that Christopher Nolan will go with a full-blown, over-the-top depiction of Catwoman (a la Batman Returns) to the point that she actually talks, moves, and acts like a kitty-cat. If Anne Hathaway literally pretends to be a cat in The Dark Knight Rises, as the source says, then the role will indeed be taking her to new places. (At least she won’t be affecting an English accent…)

Anne Hathaway isn’t the most obvious choice to play Selina Kyle or her alter ego Catwoman. Attractive though she is, in a lot of her roles, she plays goofy – in a drama geek sort of way. But then again, neither was Heath Ledger. When it was announced way back when that the “pretty boy from 10 Things I Hate About You” would be playing Batman’s most fearsome villain, everybody and their grandmother cried foul. Now it’s impossible to imagine anybody but Ledger as Nolan’s Joker.

What are your thoughts on these Catwoman costume details? Let us know in the comments.

The Dark Knight Rises is filming now and hits theaters July 20th, 2012.

  1. “But fanboys shouldn’t be worried. This costume is going to be form-fitting enough to make Anne look smoking hot.”

I didn’t know I wanted to see Anne smoking hot. I thought she already was :D

  2. If anything she’ll play Selina Kyle before becoming Catwoman perfectly. I always felt she was a dopey, clutsy secretary and then got her feline grace when she died and came back.
If they include the transformation in the movie Hathaway will make it seem like a huge change. From Princess Bride awkward big sweatshirts to leather catsuit. Yes please.

    • That’s the depiction from Burton’s “Batman Returns.” Selina Kyle isn’t at all like that in the comics (or Batman: The Animated Series). Your best bet is to check out The Long Halloween.

      • Sad. I grew up on Burton’s Catwoman. I don’t remember her in the Animated series before her transformation.
        I’ll check it out though.

        • She is a smart and intelligent as well as principled woman in the comics and the animated series, hence why Bruce Wayne fell in love with her. While they disagreed on the means to an end, they normally worked together to do the right thing.

  3. I’m willing to give her a shot. I agree with what you said about Heath Ledger, and I trust Nolan completely.

  4. Who said Heath Ledger would be a bad Joker? People always say this, but I don’t remember hearing any such thing at the time.

Catwoman better have a whip. That’s all I’m saying.

    • Really? I for one thought it was a terrible choice when I first heard it. As did almost everyone posting on these boards at the time (or maybe it was another site, I dont remember, its been a while). Ledger was a pretty boy in all of his other movies really. A Knight’s Tale was his best film prior to TDK (though I never saw Brokeback, so I can’t judge on that one) and everyone was questioning the choice.

That being said, I am very very proud to say I was 100% wrong on the casting choice :-)

      • you should have saw monsters ball

      • Lords of Dogtown came out before TDK…if you saw Heath Ledger in that, you knew he had the capability to stray away from the pretty boy side of things…

      • I agree Doom. I thought he was a terrible choice as the Joker. Too pretty boy for the role. I admit I was wrong. I think Hathaway is wrong as Catwoman, but I have a feeling that Nolan is going to prove me wrong on that choice, too.

  5. Wouldn’t have been my choice but I’ll put my trust in Nolan.

  6. This is the one casting that I did not agree with. I think that there were much better choices out there then Hathaway, but then again, there were also much worse choices. So far, to me, a lot is going on in this film- a bit too much. There are just too many high profile actors and seem to be too many side stories that are concurrently going on. If Nolan manages to pull this off, he should be considered legendary; and I am really pulling for him. I mean the past two Batman films were INCREDIBLE as was Inception but here he is taking on a lot. If he pulls this off I am putting him up there with Cameron and Spielberg as the best directors in hollywood

    • You should be already. Insomnia and Prestige are considered his “worst” films. :)

I mean, who could make a magic show interesting again? Yeah, it was an adaptation of a book, but Nolan and his brother adapted it really well. I’ve seen Prestige 4 times now and intend to see it again as part of the pre-Dark Knight Rises rollup marathons my family has prior to films coming out to get us into the “style” of the movie we’ll be seeing.

  7. “She’s going to look more like a Robber” Hmm! I bet you all she is not Robbing for Bane. Could she be on Batman side? :)

  8. Anne would make a good Selina Kyle, but I still just cannot grasp the concept of “Princess Diaries” in a catsuit.

    • You need to see her in love and other drugs then

  9. Nolan you have convinced of your work ethic with Heath Ledger’s portrayal of The Joker, but Anne Hathaway as Catwoman puts me in the same disbelief I had in Topher Grace’s portrayal of Venom, he looked awful!!! Anne I hope you where a butt pop because Selina Kyle’s got curves(I hope she plays a young prostitute graduating to a robber-this would cause for some great acting to be done on her part)

    • Hathaway has awesome curves. Check her out in “love and other drugs”, not a great movie, but one hell of a great body!

  10. “When it was announced way back when that the “pretty boy from 10 Things I Hate About You” would be playing Batman’s most fearsome villain, everybody and their grandmother cried foul.”

Now, that’s not true. There were many of us who had faith in Ledger from the beginning. :-D

  11. Anne Hathaway…in black leather…with her amazing rack…I can’t wait!

  12. I have confidence that Nolan wont turn Selina Kyle into a charactuer like Burton did and make her more like her original character in the comics. I never liked the other attempts to bring Catwoan into the movies, most were degrading to women in more ways than one.

  13. “The Dark Knight Rises is probably the most highly-anticipated comic book film of next two years”

Hmmmm, that is VERY arguable. I think that Avengers may be a bit more anticipated.

    • avengers? please. that will pale in comparison to this. granted it will generate hype. but that movie will not be directed by nolan. =)

      • So, it wont have 1 character worth watching the movie for and the rest of it be a snoozefest? Thank god!!

    • Well, going off of sheer numbers, TDKR is far more trafficked overall.

  14. She’ll do just fine….

  15. As long as it’s better than Halle Berry’s interpretation, then. . .aw, who am I kidding? OF COURSE it’s going to be better than Halle Berry’s interpretation!

  16. Also, sidenote: Who is that woman in the picture at the top of this article? I approve!

    • A drawing.

      • I still approve!

  17. Thankfully most of us have not seen the princess diaries. i think anne has the right facial features for catwoman…

    • Speak for yourself. Princess diaries was awesome

      lol

  18. Sounds like Nolan’s going to be closer to my Catwoman ideal than Burton was.

Though I won’t deny Michelle Pfeiffer made that role memorable. Hard act to follow. Hopefully they can make it work.

  19. If you doubt the sexiness of anne Hathaway, watch Love & Other Drugs. She gets very naked… very often

    • I couldnt believe it when my friend told me that^ :O

  20. I am going to reserve judgement before seeing the film. I remember back to “Batman Returns” promos showing the Catwoman suit with its stitching. I was WTF! Hated it. Upon seeing the movie, I understood WHY she wore that suit. Again, with Heath Ledger coming right off of Brokeback Mt, I was hesitant to accept him as the Joker. Proven wrong. I cannot wait to see how this final chapter ends the trilogy!

  21. The details sound very . . . vague. lol

  22. there is noway to make Anna look un-hot she is GOR-G-US the only woman hotter is Kate Beckensale

  23. For possible insight into “skintight” and “functional”, look no further than Scarlett Johannsen’s outfit on Iron Man 2. :)

  24. Here’s a link to a story about the Catwoman suit having issues with rips at the seams during filming of action sequences, plus an on set photo of Gotham Police during filming. This confirms how tight the suit is:
    http://sanfrancisco.ibtimes.com/articles/169523/20110625/the-dark-knight-rises-new-set-photo-and-hathaway-s-catwoman-suit-leaked-or-rather-ripped.htm

  25. They are referring to Anne’s movement and eye contact are very catwoman as in when she is catwoman, not when she’s walking without the costumes. It’s pretty straightforward

    • I know? That’s what I was referring to, as well. Did you think I thought the source meant that Anne Hathaway would be acting like a cat as Selina Kyle?

My point was, I don’t believe Christopher Nolan’s Catwoman would act literally like a cat.

  26. I think it’s a tough role for even the best actresses. Probably very easy for an actress to push it, take the feline thing too far and exceed the realm of believability, so I hope it’s subtle. Less is more.

  27. Functional is great. Hot? If I must look at Anne in a skin tight suit for two or more hours, well OK. Now here is where they lose me. GOGGLES???

  28. I don’t like the catwoman suit in the second. Even as a kid I hated it. I didn’t care for Dark Knight untill I saw it, so I didn’t make any judgement calls on Heth. My point is, I have faith in Nolan’s choices in this movie and his realistic decisions for the Batman universe. I’m quite confident that Anne Hathaway will do a tramendus job, although I wasn’t to keen on this choice five months ago.

Me personally, I’m EXTREEEEEEEEEEEEMLY happy that they’re bringing Liam Neeson and Ra’s Al Ghul back again! Hooorrraaahhh!!! With my favorite DC villain AND one of my favorite actors back (in addition to Bane), Catwoman/Salena Kyle/Anne Hathaway is second on my list for favorite news. Now, don’t get me wrong, I think this is great, It’s just not the greatest news to be released this month. :-)
