Adam Shankman (Hairspray) has encountered little difficulty in gathering together big name talents to star in his screen adaptation of the '80s glam rock musical, Rock of Ages. The film already counts Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, and musical artist Mary J. Blige as members of its cast.

The cast for the song & dance picture just became a whole lot prettier: Catherine Zeta-Jones is now signed on to fill a villainous role that was created specifically for the Rock of Ages movie.

THR has the scoop on Zeta-Jones joining Rock of Ages, with Shankman describing her character in the film as follows:

“It’s a character that we only really came to in the last month... [She's like] if Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant had a love child. She is this hardcore, moral majority, arch-conservative who wants to shut down rock'n roll in the great city of Los Angeles."

Zeta-Jones will serve as the face of a movement to shut down Dennis Dupree's (Baldwin) beloved Bourbon Room and clean up the Hollywood's Sunset Strip, circa 1987. Cruise will play the all-but-washed-up rock legend Stacee Jaxx, who's recruited by Dupree to put on one last show and save his club from being demolished.

Lesser-knowns Diego Gonzalez Boneta and Julianne Hough are also starring in Rock of Ages as Drew and Sherrie, a city boy and small-town girl (that's a Journey reference, in case you missed it) who struggle to find love and succeed in the City of Angels. Blige is co-staring as a rival club owner, and Brand will play Lonny, who manages the Bourbon Room for Dupree.

Rock of Ages movie

By the time Rock of Ages hits theaters, a decade will have passed since Zeta-Jones lit up the screen with her Oscar-winning turn as Velma Kelly in Chicago, but her return to the musical genre will certainly be more than welcomed by many a fan. Shankman's film is likely be more broadly comical and less satirical than Rob Marshall's big screen treatment of Chicago, but it should still be fun to watch Zeta-Jones play what sounds like a melodramatic and borderline cartoonish villain.

The rest of the cast should work well enough in their respective Rock of Ages roles, and the movie's use of classic '80s tunes like "I Want To Know What Love Is", "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", or the previously-referenced "Don't Stop Believin'" might be enough to convince non-musical enthusiasts to check out the film as well. Okay, maybe not, but there's at least a chance of that happening.

Rock of Ages is slated to hit theaters on June 1st, 2012.
