Catherine Hardwicke To Direct ‘The Maze Runner’

Published 4 years ago by , Updated August 4th, 2013 at 3:57 am,

After kicking off one of the most successful movie franchises of all time with the first Twilight movie, director Catherine Hardwicke has since moved onto other things, namely Red Riding Hood, a new take on the classic Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale, which hits theaters next Spring.

Now it’s being reported that Hardwicke will possibly follow up that fantasy film with yet another – an adaptation of the young-adult fantasy book The Maze Runner, by author James Dashner.

The Wrap reports exclusively that Hardwicke is in early negotiations to direct The Maze Runner for 20th Century Fox, a film the studio is no doubt hoping will kick off another major fantasy franchise. The adaptation is of the first book in a trilogy, first published just last October. Author James Dashner is expected to pen the screenplay for the adaptation.

In case you’re unfamiliar with The Maze Runner, The Wrap kindly provides a synopsis:

The story follows a boy named Thomas who wakes up in a strange place called the Glade with no memory aside from his first name. The Glade is an enclosed structure populated by other boys, and is surrounded by tall, stone walls that protect them from monsters called Grievers that live in the Maze, which surrounds the walls around the Glade.

Every day, some of the kids who are Runners venture into the labyrinth trying to map the ever-changing pattern of walls in an attempt to find an exit. As soon as Thomas arrives, unusual things begin to happen and the others grow suspicious of him. The Maze seems familiar to Thomas, but he’s unable to make sense of the place despite his extraordinary abilities as a Runner. When the first girl arrives in the Glade, she brings a message that she will be the last one to ever arrive in the Glade, as the end is near.

The book series has already drawn comparisons to The Hunger Games trilogy, which is also being adapted into a movie under the direction of Gary Ross.

The Maze Runner sounds like it deals with the age-old issues of adolescence, growing up and the differences (and similarities) between male and female behavior. Hardwicke is no stranger to these sorts of themes, which were touched on in the first Twilight movie. What’s nice to see is the director choosing to helm a fantasy movie that doesn’t involve myths, legends or fairy tales we’re familiar with – she has already dealt with vampires and werewolves in Twilight, and the Little Red Riding Hood story in Red Riding Hood.

Catherine Hardwicke Twilight and Red Riding Hood Catherine Hardwicke To Direct The Maze Runner

While certainly intriguing, I am wondering just how The Maze Runner can be successfully translated from page-to-screen. The idea of a group of boys being trapped inside a giant walled maze and continually trying to find a way out, all the while avoiding Maze-dwelling monsters, doesn’t exactly sound like the easiest of things to make work on-screen.

Having said that, Hardwicke has a keen eye for interesting visuals (Red Riding Hood at least looks gorgeous) so I am willing to put faith in her that she will, if nothing else, make The Maze Runner visually impressive.

For those wondering about Hardwicke’s modern day version of Hamlet, that project reportedly fell apart a couple of months ago, the reason why is still unclear (too much of a hard sell to today’s audiences? Too big of a financial risk?). While that may be bad news for Hardwicke fans, at least we still have her Maze Runner movie to help heal the wounds.

No shooting or release dates have been scheduled for The Maze Runner yet. You can catch Hardwicke’s latest film, Red Riding Hood, when it hits theaters on March 11th, 2011.

  1. Nooooo! D: D: D:

  2. Oh my god! I swear to god! If she uses the same bs she used in twilight I’m never. Ever. Seeing this movie. Ever

    • I KNOW RIGHT! i dont even want it to become popular…. it will ruin the wonderful book :(

  3. Im really excited about the movie but i hope it doesn’t turn into a zoo like The Mortal Instruments and The Hunger Games movies are :( Just stick to the book and use unknown actors and this shouldn’t turn out horribly!

    • Um, The Mortal Instruments is still coming out and should start to have more news soon. As for The Hunger Games, it came out and was amazing… If it turns into The Hunger Games, I’ll be extremely happy.

      • I wrote that a year ago so yes I’m aware of how good the movie (HG) was and the new info on TMI.

  4. I can’t wait till this movie comes out!! I think The Hunger Games will come out not as big as a success as Twilight but i am head over heels for The Maze Runner series and i think the movie will be great! Can’t wait :D

    • Lol I guess you were wrong HG turned out to be way better then Twilight!

  5. I really want to be in this movie. Im an unknown actor and i have the exact description of Teresa. Just watching to hear about casting!!!

    • i want to be in this movie as well. i am also an unknown actress. although i don’t look like Teresa i would get extensions, die my hair black, or even dress as a guy to be in this movie.

  6. NO!

I don’t want her to direct The Maze Runner! It is one of my favourite book series, and she is going to RUIN it. She did a terrible job on Twilight, and a terrible job on Red Riding Hood.
Both had potential to be extremely good movies. Originally, I thought the actors just sucked. But I’ve seen the actors in different movies, and they were wonderful!

So it has to be her directing. Ugh. I don’t want her to ruin this. -__-

    • I agreed until you said it HAS to be her directing. It could have been something else. You’re right. Twilight was very awful, but realize this. Although they’re wonderful in other things, it does NOT take away from the fact that they suck in Twilight.

    • THE DIRECTOR IS A SHUCK FACE AAAAAAHHHHHHHH I LOVE THIS BOOK, IF SHE RUINS THIS FOR ME AND ALL OTHERS SHES GONNA HAVE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS! I HOPE SHE REAING THIS TO NO HOW MUCH PRESSURE IS ON THIS ONE SHUCKIN MOVIE, SHE BETTER STUDY THE BOOK! OR IMA FLIP OUT MORE THAN I AM NOW!

  7. Holy crap!!! I was born to play Frypan…Seriously…I hope it’s not too late…i haven’t heard anything about casting.

  8. OMG i think the movie will be amazing i am excited for the Hunger Games too!!
i just finished the last book in the maze runner and i love it just saying i think this will be amazing

  9. OMG! This is my favourite book series. I want to be in this movie soooo bad! How can I? Any ideas? I really want to be Theresa. I think I can make the movie really good! Help?

  10. I could probably be Chuck: I’m 12, plumpy, and I’m as much of an outcast as him. The only problem is that I’m a ginger. :(

  11. Another problem is that I’m not as talkative but I still really want to be in the movie if possible

  12. OMG nooooooooooooooooooo she freaking ruined twilight, It was areally good book but was ruined because of her and now everyone hates twilight. If twilight was done right a lot less people would hate it. She ruined itt!!!!! How dare she try to ruin the maze runner which is an amazing book!!!!!!!!!!
    NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. I DON’T WANT HER TO DIRECT THE MOVIE! I WANT THE DIRECTOR OF HARRY POTTER TO DIRECT THE MOVIE! I WISH THE ACTORS WOULD BE NON-FAMOUS ACTORS AND START CASTING FOR PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD! I DON’T WANT LOGAN LERMAN OR STERLING KNIGHT OR JUSTIN BIEBER TO STAR IN THE MOVIE! if you do, i will break the CD when i buy the movie in half. (: and no, NEVER COMPARE THE MAZE RUNNER WITH THE HUNGER GAMES! BOTH DIFFERENT STORIES! got it. both are my favorite book but just don’t compare it, ever again.

  14. oh yeeah, i still think Tom Felton would be a good “Newt” because he’s all english and smart and stuff.

    • DUDE IM PERFECT TO PLAY BRENDA

      • plz !

  15. i have absolutely no idea if Catherine Hardwicke will be a good director or not but i REALLY hope this will be a good movie. we better all Pray to God and Jesus that it will be good.

  16. I BELIVE THAT the Maze Runner Series is the most awesomest (if that even is a word) thing that books could evar be !!! The people who love the series should come together and decide on who we want to be the director and who we ant to be in the cast, because if all the right people come together to fil this Trilogy this movie will be a sucsess!!!, the movie will make alot of tons of hits in the box office. I’ve never even heard about the movie “The Hobbit”, because that crappy director did such a POOR job on all those “could of been awesome movies”, I will pray every night that we find the best actors and directors and screenplay, and all that good stuff, that takes to make this movie. James Dashner is not a just a stupid author form Georgia that came up with this awesome idea of a Trilogy. The georgians and the people of the world who loves this series ( and Thomas), needs to come together and FIND THE RIGHT FIX.

        - Thanks, Fire

  18. When are they casting?? Sadly I dont look like any of the people in the Maze Runner…but i look a lot like Brenda in the Scorch Trials!!! This is my favorite book series in the whole world!! Being in the movies would be a dream come true!!

  19. Hey! My name’s Christina and I am absolutely in love with the Maze Runner Trilogy ! Does anyone know when or where auditions for the Scorch Trial are? I would like to try out as Brenda I have long dark hair, and I have dark eyes I’m pretty tall which makes me look about 16 even though I’m really 14. I’ve been in theatrical plays as one of the leading roles and I would just kill for a chance to be in a movie, even to audition.

    • I have long light brown hair and dark eyes. I am 13 but look like a high schooler i would love to play Brenda. It would be awesome!

  20. non-famous actors and we shouldnt have a problem, looking forward to it :D

  21. If this woman ruins my FAVORITE books i will be sooooo sad!
this is the worst thing that could ever happen. I didn’t even want the books turned into a movie cause i’m afraid they’re genna make it a stupid kid movie or ruin it completly by making it a soppy love story (must be hard to do but im sure the director of twilight could pull it off) i hope they don’t take away much of the violence in it cause even if they do want it to be available to teens like the hunger games i truly wish it stays fully loyal to the story, the violence, and every little detail (yh i know you cant put everything in a movie adaptation)

you know what, all i wish for is for unknown actors, loyalty to the original story and James Dashner to be like co-director or something.

    • I agree completely.

    • YES! Catherine Hardwicke is a SHUCK-FACE! shes gonna ruin everything D:

  22. One more thing, i hope they don’t get too many 25 – 30 yr old actors to play the kids cause, like, they’re meant to be kids, and they’d make the same mistake the made in the Percy Jackson adaptation (12 yr olds turned into 16 yr olds) and the actors must stay young enough to complete the triology!!!

  23. Noo she messed up Twilight so bad…. please someone else! She’s awful! She made me hate Twilight, Maze Runner is worlds better and deserves so much more. Please please please I want Maze Runner to actually be good.

  24. Does anyone know any information about auditions for the movie?

  25. I’m wondering because I’m interested in the role of Brenda in The Scorch Trials. I have much expierience with professional theatre and my age range is 12 to 15. I’m slim with dark hair and extremely dark eyes. Thank you in advance!

  26. Well, as long as they don’t turn it into Twilight 2.0, I am ok with this. Even though it IS hinted at that Thomas and Teresa may have been more than friends before…things happened (trying to stay spoiler free here)…they never kiss or say I love you or anything in the first book. I also wonder how watered down the violence will be. Things get very dark as the book gets closer to the end and even has moments earlier that are not kid friendly at all. Plenty of blood, that’s for sure.

  27. Can’t. Wait for maze runner book if it’s… anything like twilight count me out P.S am I the only person who hates twilight and thinks it has ruined the way people think of vampires cays I sure as hell do

  28. My name is Hayley and I am 16. I am an unknown actress and I have been in more than 10 plays/musicals. I would really like to come to an audition for the Scorch Trials. Please comment with info on when and where the auditions will be. Thank you.

  29. Holy crap. I want to be in this movie sooooo bad, its like the hunger games in a way… but better, I read the books as soon as they came out, I love every one of them!
