Now that Gary Ross, the filmmaker behind the blockbuster hit The Hunger Games, has officially announced that he will not be returning to direct Catching Fire (or Hunger Games 2, if you will), we've come up a list of five possible directors who could successfully helm Catching Fire. We evaluated our picks according to two basic criteria: who would likely say yes to the job, and if they are even available to direct this massive project.
If SWATH turns out to be as good as it looks in the footage we’ve seen so far Rupert Sanders would be a great choice.
But if SWATH does turn out to be great Sanders will be getting a lot of offers and if he has his own passion project in mind he might want to do that 1st.
He’s already directed a scene for the first movie & he is well known for movies like Ocean’s 11, and recently Haywire. Also, since Catching Fire, will be exploring more of the districts, he could bring some of his creativity with the world of the districts.
From what we’ve seen so far, SWATH just might be my most anticipated movie of the summer (sorry, Batman); but if I had to pick right now, I love Rupert Wyatt.
AHEM! HELLO… HAVE YOU ALL FORGOTTEN THE NAME THAT GAVE US, POSSIBLY ONE OF THE BEST DYSTOPIAN CIVILIZATION MOVIE EVER? ALFONSO CUARON BABY!!. HE’s just the man for this series. Though he might not wanna take two (or as everyone keeps pointing out, possibly three) movies from a franchise, his works in Children of Men can be easily imagined as the war period in Mockingjay. (now he’d be more perfect for the third.
So if A.Cuaron is not the take-all-movies-from-a-franchise kind of guy.I Have my back-up guy for Catching Fire by the name of this fantastic guy, Danny Boyle. Just imagine Slumdog less Bombay (replace India with District 12) plus 28 Days Later.. less zombies (just acid rains and creepy mutts) plus 127 Hours with actual audience (not the imaginary one’s James Franco is conjuring up out of his wits – and of course ther goes hunger and thirst
What about people who haven’t directed a lot of fantasy movies? Like KATHRYN BIGELOW? She would be perfect for Catching Fire and Mockingjay!! As would Steven Soderbergh. I think Soderbergh would be better because, he knows how to direct good action sequences, especially if they are hand to hand, and he SECOND UNIT DIRECTOR of the first film! Why not stick with someone who was part of the first film instead of someone who would make the film heavy with effects?
Rupert Wyatt or David Slade, hands down. Both of them have done stunningly amazing movies, and Rise of the Planet of the Apes was probably my favorite film from last year. If he can bring that tension and story telling to Catching Fire, it’ll be epic.
All of the suggestions people are throwing out are ones we had too: they just aren’t available to start shooting ‘Catching Fire’ in the next few months.
Rupert Wyatt’s depiction of the Apes uprising was so good, I can totally see him replicating the same events in Panem. However, I think Academy Award Winner Kathryn Bigelow would produce a more visceral movie, and also bring upon the necessary darkness required for Mockingjay. Between these two, I think the person more passionate about the story-arc should get the position.
I’d love to see Alfonso Curaón direct “Catching Fire.”
Same but I would love to see Rupert Wyatt(RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES) or Rupert Sanders (SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN) direct.
Ive stated it in a previous collum about this, either Mel Gibson or Takeshi Miike. Imagine the possibilities???
I’m just curious if you guys at screen rants would think duncan jones would say yes?

What? No Cuaron?? Dammit I want Alfonso Cuaron!!
What about Antoine Fuqua, Chris columbus or that guy who directed Michael Clayton
Can I dream? Christopher Nolan.
Can I dream again? Alfonso Cuarón.
And again? J. J. Abrams.
Ok. Done with dreaming. How about Debra Granik?
David Slade or Rupert Sanders? NO FREAKIN’ WAY!
