Glistening metallic vehicles with colorful personalities and pun-heavy names will ride rampant onscreen in Disney/Pixar’s sequel, Cars 2, which arrives in theaters next summer.

The first image from the followup to the 2006 merchandising hit Cars has been unveiled and with it comes an official plot description and teaser poster for the new adventure with hot red racing stud Lightning McQueen (whose engine made noises eerily similar to Owen Wilson’s voice in the first film icon smile Cars 2 Teaser Poster, Image, And Official Synopsis ).

Wilson will return to voice McQueen in Cars 2 and will be joined by Pixar stalwart John Ratzenberger, along with Bonnie Hunt, who provides the vocals for the royal blue Porsche and McQueen love interest (still not sure how that works), Sally Carrera. Monk‘s Tony Shalhoub and Cheech Marin (last seen onscreen as Machete‘s “holy” brother, Padre) will also lend their voices to the Cars sequel, along with the redneck funnyman himself, Larry the Cable Guy, as the trusty rusty tow truck, Mater.

Read the official Cars 2 synopsis below, followed by the first image released from the animated pic:

Star racecar Lightning McQueen and the incomparable tow truck Mater take their friendship to exciting new places in ‘Cars 2′ when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage.  Torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret spy mission, Mater’s action-packed journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world.  Adding to the fast-paced fun is a colorful new all-car cast that includes secret agents, menacing villains and international racing competitors.

Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter is co-directing Cars 2, alongside Rataouille producer Brad Lewis. The story for the first Cars bore a resemblance to the Michael J. Fox comedy, Doc Hollywood (with cars instead of southern townies, naturally) and had its charms, but the sequel looks to both amp up the number of racing sequences – which can be glimpsed in 3D this time – and give more screen time to Mater, in the hopes that he’ll work as more than just a one-note comic relief.

A teaser trailer for Cars 2 was released last month and it suggested that the film will be a fun adventure for the whole family that avoids the tear-inducing drama of this year’s Toy Story 3 – and, given the nature of the Cars universe, that’s probably for the best.

  1. this movie was obviously made for more money, you know how much of the cars merchandise is still selling even today? alot compared to the incredibles.

    • “@this movie was obviously made for more money,”

So is every single other movie that gets made. All films are used for merchandising, especially family films like this. Just think how much merchandising was made for Toy Story 3.

I actually liked the Cars, but I’m more interested in a sequel to The Incredibles.

  2. What happened to Pixar’s originality? Why do they continue to create sequels when there are better ideas out there??

    • I agree, for the most part, BUT I did love “toy Story”s 1 and 2 :)

      • Arrrgh!!!

…should be “Toy Story”, not “toy Story”.

        • lol

edit buttons are a must ;)

        • Wait, did you not like Toy Story 3?

          • Sin…

Actually, I MEANT to say “Toy Story”s 2 and 3, since those were the sequels. :P

            Yes, I LOVED #3!

      • Ya same here. But although i loved Toy Story 3, i thought it was unnecessary. And would have preferred to see something different. Thats just me though.

        • IMO toy story 3 is the best because it has so much emotions. Its an amazing story i loved it.

          • It did have a ton of emotion. And really appreciated that. But the story wasnt the most original in the world and to me it was just an unnecessary sequel. Now How To Train Your Dragon? That movie rocked :D

  3. am i the only one that this sounds kinda cool too really? really ? really????

  4. Unfortunately, Larry the Cable Guy was already in an espionage-type film, a farce which failed miserably. Now, I’m a tad bit concerned (I do realize that Pixar has done a wonderful so far, hence the “tad bit”).

  5. Cars was a weak one… go back to Newt.

    • Huh???

      • Newt. Pixar was gonna make a film called newt about germs..

        • …ah…did not know that…Thank you.

  6. I thought if its asequel-then Owen wilson’s character should be the headliner but it seems that this isn’t the case-hmm..is that because Wilson isn’t that bankable anymore?? He’s got another flick coming out-but that’s been it for sometime now..

  7. this is gonna be awsome my kids are gonna love it

  8. Kids will love this, and we should all remember, these films are made for kids not adults.
Pixar have yet to make an awful film, they have made a few that arent great, but no stinkers as of yet, gonna give this the benefit of the doubt as I quite liked the first one.

Now where is that pesky Monsters Inc sequel?????!!!!!?????

  9. very cool franchise…

  10. cars 2 is gona be amazing. i loved the first one and this is a great idia by pixar. everyone who saw cars 1 loved it and it is one of the most popular movies out their for kids. i think that everyone will go to see this movie and love it.

  11. This movie is bad ive seen it already…

    • your jus a hater who has no tast in movies, and their is no way youve seen it yet it isnt finished.

  13. wow loveing cars2 lol :)
