Ridley Scott protege (and future son-in-law?) Carl Rinsch was set to direct the remake of Logan's Run for Warner Bros., with 28 Days Later screenwriter Alex Garland already at work on a script.

Now, according to Heat Vision, Rinsch is no longer attached to the Logan's Run remake, due to conflict with another project he has on his slate: Universal's adaptation of the popular Japanese legend, 47 Ronin.

If you don't know about Rinsch, he started out as a commercial director whose sci-fi-inspired ads lured him into the good graces of Ridley and Tony Scott (dating Ridley's daughter helped too, I'm sure). In fact, Sir Ridley initially tapped Rinsch to direct the upcoming Alien prequels but Fox wasn't too comfortable with that idea. Rinsch didn't twist in the wind long, though, landing directorial duties on both 47 Ronin and Logan's Run. He also directed a sci-fi short called The Gift that has sparked a small bidding war, and planted Rinsch firmly on Hollywood's radar. (Watch The Gift HERE if you haven't already.)

When it was initially announced that Rinsch would be helming the new Logan's Run - about a future in which people are sacrificed when they turn age thirty - it was assumed that the project was still a ways off; at least that it wouldn't go into production until Rinsch was done with 47 Ronin, a legendary story about 47 Samurai who embarked on mission to avenge their slain master. Keanu Reeves will star in Ronin.

Ultimately, Universal pulled ahead with its production on Ronin, greenlighting the feature, nailing down a release date, a script, scout locations and concept art. Rinsch apparently couldn't keep both films on his slate and chose Ronin as his directorial debut.

This of course leaves the Logan's Run remake without a director, though names like Bryan Singer, James McTeigue (Ninja Assassin) and Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy) have been previously rumored for the position. I'm sure we'll be hearing about a new director for the Logan's Run remake in coming weeks.

Rinsch's 47 Ronin will be in theaters on November 21, 2012.
