No Captain Marvel in Avengers: Infinity War

One of the Avengers: Infinity War directors says that Brie Larson's Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel will not be making an appearance in the film next year. The news comes following the San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, where Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios revealed some of the first creative details about the 2019 Captain Marvel solo film. Not only was Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury confirmed to be appearing in the movie, but much to the excitement of Marvel fans everywhere, Feige also revealed that Captain Marvel will be set in the 1990s and will finally introduce the legendary Skrulls into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While she was never officially confirmed to be a part of the film's ensemble, Carol Danvers has been closely associated with the Infinity War film, since she was often rumored to be making her first appearance in the 2018 film. Now, it looks as though fans may actually have to wait until the 2019 solo outing before they finally get to see Larson's Captain Marvel make her long-awaited debut on the big screen.

Infinity War co-director Joe Russo confirmed that Larson will not be in the third Avengers film while speaking with Comicbook.com this past weekend, saying "She's not in Avengers 3." The director, however, did not further elaborate on Marvel's big screen plans for the character, or what her involvement may be in the currently untitled Avengers 4, which the Russos are also directing, and will be hitting theaters in 2019, just one year after Infinity War does.

Now, it's entirely possible that Russo is just trying to throw fans from predicting Captain Marvel's introduction in the film. But whether he is or not, it's not hard to see why there's so much curiosity and anticipation surrounding Captain Marvel's inevitable introduction into the MCU. Carol Danvers is, after all, a character that fans have been asking for Marvel to bring to life on the big screen for years now. And while progress on the film was slow for quite some time, after the Captain Marvel film found its own directors a couple months ago, and Brie Larson was cast in the role last year, anticipation has only been growing more and more as of late.

Based on Russo's comments here -- and the fact that Captain Marvel will be the last MCU film released before it -- it's likely safe to speculate that the character will play some kind of a role in Avengers 4. That makes even more sense when considering that Russo recently confirmed filming on Avengers 4 begins in two weeks, likely explaining the confusion surrounding the Captain Marvel-related casting call for the Avengers films that was released recently. Whether that's the case or not, though, the recent Captain Marvel movie news only makes the circumstances surrounding her inevitable interactions with the Avengers and the rest of the MCU heroes that much more interesting to think about, especially if she'll really only be introduced after things in the universe have already gotten tumultuous in Infinity War next year.
