Captain Marvel will be the first Marvel Studios solo female superhero film - and has frankly been a long time coming. Fans of the studio have been anticipating a movie like this, virtually since the dawn of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Warner Bros. Pictures and DC gearing up for their summer 2017 blockbuster Wonder Woman, Marvel Studios looks to answer with the Brie Larson-led Captain Marvel thereafter.
With the relatively recent official casting of the Academy Award winning Larson, the film has been attracting a lot of attention of late. That is further evidenced by the interest in a recent episode of the podcast Any Time With Vin Forte, featuring Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel co-writer, Nicole Perlman. The latter gave some insight into the importance of this film as well as the title character's backstory in the movie. Moreover, Perlman revealed that Carol Danvers' origins will undergo some tweaking in the film, in order to avoid comparisons to another well-known cosmic superhero.
On the August 10th episode of the podcast, Perlman (who is co-writing Captain Marvel with Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur co-writer Meg LeFauve) discussed Carol Danvers' backstory, and specifically, how it will need to be altered in order to differentiate itself from Hal Jordan's/Green Lantern's. I don’t think I’ve ever had a project where I’ve been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it. She’s such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently. But here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do. There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And also, she’s her own person and she’s a great character. We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel film and makes sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time. It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet. It’s been good to have a partner. It’s been an incredible experience. If we can pull it off it could be an incredibly important but also really fun and kick-ass superhero film.
Without veering too far into detail, Danvers' origins features an alien with great abilities traveling to Earth and bestowing those powers upon an unassuming human. If you are under the impression that this story sounds a lot like Hal Jordan's, apparently you are not alone as the film's screenwriters clearly feel the same way.
Specific changes concerning the character for the upcoming film have not been detailed, but with nearly three years until the release of Captain Marvel, it appears as though fans have a long road of theories and speculation ahead. We may find out more about Carol Danvers' history in the MCU ahead of then though, now that it's been all but firmly confirmed that she will make an appearance in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, before her solo movie arrives a year after.
Some comic book fans may be put off by the idea of the writing team tweaking the origin story of Carol Danvers. On the other hand, Marvel Studios has proven in the past that it's willing to steer away from the source material in order to better serve its cinematic universe (and, in turn, fans). With a proven track record of success and a continued evolution of in-depth storytelling, the studio has more than earned the benefit of the doubt moving forward.
