After a decade of Marvel movies, 2019 will finally bring a female solo film into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Captain Marvel has long been anticipated thanks to the character’s power and position in the comics. With a release date still over two years away, there has not been much news about the project starring Brie Larson.
The film currently sits without a director and Marvel is reportedly in no rush to find one as the finishing touches are put on the script. However, with Avengers: Infinity War headed to theaters first, audiences may not have to wait until the solo movie to see Larson as Captain Marvel, or at the very least her human persona Carol Danvers. With so much secrecy surrounding the project, Larson is even weary to reveal what hairstyle the character will sport.
While speaking to IGN on the press tour for Kong: Skull Island, Larson was asked about the look of her character. She knows that regardless of what look Carol has, some fans will have wanted something else.
“I can’t say anything… I feel like this is a big conversation and everyday I have people yelling at me on Twitter like you better have long hair, or you better have a mohawk, or you better wear the helmet, or you better not wear the helmet, so someone’s going to be mad.”
Comic fans are about as passionate a fan base as they come, as Larson knows, so it is not surprising she gets bombarded with their opinions on a daily basis. Despite the constant demands of fans, Larson makes it clear just how much this character means to her.
“I find its really hard for me to condense what she means to me. I was once a young girl and I was confused by what a hero was and what I wanted to be when I grow up and what was important to me. And so, I think its so complicated growing up and to attempt to become a symbol of truth and navigating through all the weird questions of growing up feels so, I’m getting emotional just talking about this, it feels so important to me. When it comes to her, I mean just the fact that she can be a bridge between two worlds, that she can go between Earth and space and that her own personal place is in this little area between where Earth ends and space begins and that’s only hers is so moving to me. I’m just inspired.”
Regardless of her look in the movie, as long as things go according to plan, Larson and Marvel will have plenty more opportunities to change the character’s style moving forward. Marvel has taken every opportunity possible to switch up character looks for more comic references (and merchandise sales), so a change to Carol’s hair and costume later on could be in the cards.
