Captain America 2: Meet Robert Redford’s S.H.I.E.L.D. Team

When Chris Evans was signed by Marvel Studios to play the iconic and patriotic hero, Captain America, Marvel surrounded him with veteran talent. It’s the successful formula for their superhero films, introducing lower profile actors and giving them a stellar cast to work off of, crafting new stars themselves. In the case of Robert Downey Jr., they (re) introduced him in Iron Man with Oscar winners/nominees Jeff Bridges, Gwyneth Paltrow and Terrence Howard, helping him on the way to becoming into the highest paid man in Hollywood. They had Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins support Chris Hemsworth in Thor, and for Evans, he had Hugo Weaving, Stanley Tucci and Tommy Lee Jones.

For the sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which takes place primarily in the present day, Marvel and directors Anthony and Joe Russo managed to do something unexpected, and cast Robert Redford into a key role in the film. According to the founder of the Sundance Film Festival – named after one of his most iconic roles – Redford is playing the “head” of S.H.I.E.L.D., a character later confirmed to be Alexander Pierce. While Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) has The Avengers, Agent Pierce has a team of his own as well.

Remember that unexplained, mysterious council that Nick Fury had to report to several times during The Avengers, the ones who wanted to nuke New York as a way to stop the Chitauri alien invaders? They’re going to be back for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and very likely will be a big part of the “conspiracy theory thriller” plot of the film that will determine “where loyalties lie” come time for The Avengers 2, as explained by screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

Chin Han as Lau in The Dark Knight

Veteran actress Jenny Agutter, who had a small role in The Avengers as one of the council members, returns to that same role joined by Bernard White as another new member of the council. Chin Han, who’s had two stints on the DC Entertainment side of things, playing Lau in The Dark Knight and appearing in several episodes of the CW’s Arrow joins as another new character. And last but not least, Alan Dale, most recently seen as Once Upon a Time’s King George and The Killing’s Senator Eaton has also signed on, according to Twitch.

What role with Redford’s Pierce and his team play in the plot and are we going to see a regime change at S.H.I.E.L.D.? With some of The Winter Soldier concept art revealing Steve Rogers battling a Quinjet – not to mention, sporting the new Secret Avengers costume – we’re beginning to think so.

Cap’s next adventure is being directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo off a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and will release in 3D. Robert Redford joins Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Samuel L. Jackson,  Cobie Smulders, Scarlett Johansson, Toby JonesAnthonie Mackie, Frank Grillo, Hayley Atwell, Maximiliano Hernandez and Georges St-Pierre.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015.

  1. Talk about having alot of peers.

  2. Can’t wait to see it. It’s also great that they’re casting such veteran stars to really give those on the fence a notion that this is a movie to be taken seriously and possibly follow along the same lines as the Jack Ryan series of movies where political intrigue is the name of the game.

  3. Robert Redford would’ve made a fine Nick Fury or Captain America in his younger years. I’m still not sold on Human Torch excuse me I mean Chris Evans playing Cap. My casting opinion was Chris Pine. Stop recycling…..there’s enough talent in the world for crying out loud!

    • If Chris Pine was Captain America he wouldn’t be Kirk so the Star Trek reboot wouldn’t have been as good without him. Anyway Chris Pine is too small to play Cap and Chris Evans is just as good, if not better at playing Captain America than the human torch. I think no one suits the role more.

      • Evans is Ok, they could have gotten a better more serious actor for the role.

        • I really can’t take Chris Pine seriously as an actor. I don’t know why, I just can’t.

I really can’t think of anyone else I’d rather have playing Steve Rogers other than Chris Evans. He really suits the role. Otherwise, if we had a time machine, we could bring in Steve McQueen.

          • Or a 30 year old Robert Redford.

        • I don’t know. I think it was the writers somewhat cheesy dialogue and scenes that was a disservice for Chris Evans in Cap. Both of these actors casting really(best) suit the characters they ended up having to portray from their source material.

    • I thought he would’ve made a great Ozymandias in his prime.

    • Chris Evans Is a good Human Torch, and He’s a DAMN GOOD CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!

  4. im really not a chris Evans fan but thought he did a good job with the first moovie .I think this Will be a better a better movie than the previous one .and im looking so forward to watching George stpiere too .

  5. Alexander Pierce, Jasper Sitwell, and Senator Stern are all a part of HYDRA.

    • Doubt it.

  6. If HYDRA makes its return that means we could/should also eventually get Jessica Drew/Spider Woman….please please please

    • +1

  7. Despite the ill treated Iron Man 3, which I liked up until the Mandarin fiasco, phase 2 is looking pretty good and can’t wait to see how these events mold and shape The Avengers 2.

    • @Agent 0 i totally agree

  8. This movie is getting more and more interesting too. Can’t wait to see it :D

  9. Chin Han going to be Agent Jimmy Woo and this might confirm about the whole Life Model Decoy. in the comics Woo was temporarily replaced by a Life Model Decoy

  10. Robert Redford is the villain. Calling it now.

    • He’s admitted as much in an interview.

  11. I hope they don’t go overboard with the Oscar winning actors and/or directors. We really don’t need a superhero film that’s an allegory for some pretensious, life affirming message that is their vision. These should be fun, action adventure, pure entertainment films.

    • But it doesn’t hurt to have talented actors in the parts or you end up with Channing Tatum as your lead.

  12. Calling now… Robert Redford is Red Skull!

  13. alan dale is the red skull

  14. i think they should bring in ah-nuld to play a much older red skull. no silly one liners (other than the obligatory i’ll be back) and maybe this could redeem him from batman & robin.

    • I hope your joking. That sounds awful. Plus I doubt he would want to play a Nazi.

  15. Obviously the council is not happy with Fury. So, they are going to try and “neuter” him by a demotion.

  16. It will ne nice to see another team against the avengers. But who masters of evil, the secret warriors
