The Return of Captain America…

Jun 16, 2009 by

Find out how the timing of the return of Captain America in the comics might tie into the upcoming movie.

Steve Rogers as Captain America

The First Avenger: Captain America is one of the four big budget summer blockbusters on Marvel’s official slate of upcoming films. Along with the Iron Man franchise, The Incredible Hulk and Thor, Captain America is getting his own origin film to establish his character in Marvel movie continuity all culminating to the main event: The Avengers.

It’s fantastic timing for Marvel to be doing this with their own fast-growing studio during the era of comic book films, but for Captain America, the timing seemed a little off in terms of lining up with the comics since the character the movie is based on is dead – and has been for over two years.

Well, that’s not going to be the case for long and it’s no coincidence in timing.

Captain America originated back in the 1940s and since that time, he’s been portrayed mainly by the character of Steve Rogers. At least, up until March of 2007 when writer Ed Brubaker had him assassinated in Captain America #25 (Volume 5) at the conclusion of the major Marvel crossover event, Civil War. The Civil War saga saw all the heroes and villains of the Marvel universe pick one of two sides: With the government and their Superhuman Registration Act lead by Tony Stark (Iron Man) or with Captain America’s freedom fighters who fought against it.

Killing off the character was a successful plan by the writers, looking back and seeing how much coverage it was given by mainstream media. Now they’re attempting to do that again by doing the opposite and likely bringing Steve Rogers back from the dead. Of course, he wasn’t going to be dead forever, or even for a long time for that matter – it’s surprising his “death” lasted as long as it did (far longer than Superman‘s death following the Doomsday storyline). When you think about it, they need to capitalize on the timing with the major blockbuster Marvel films that will feature the star-spangled Hero.

According to several reports and plenty of online buzz, Captain America #600 (which officially comes out tomorrow, June 17th), sets up the return of Steve Rogers. Since Rogers’ death, his friend Bucky Barnes has taken up the mantle and sported the new Captain America suit. What will happen with Steve coming back? Will there be two Captain Americas or will Bucky step down… or something else?

On July 1st, the five-issue mini-series Captain America: Reborn begins which will truly see the return of Steve Rogers and according to Bleeding Cool, comic retailers everywhere have apparently been encouraged to stock up on these issues and given incentives to do so in order to tie in to some “major Marvel news.”

  1. I think Worthington would make a good US AGent in a Cap movie..since he seems to like the F-bomb so much

  2. For the costume I think they should get rid of the red and white stripes on the abdomen..keep the shield the way it is because it always looked f%^^%$8g cool!! Make the costume all blue with the red cloves and boots and the white sleeves..it will look like kevlar or some reinforced type of body armor anyway..Get rid of the star on the chest or make it smaller ..it just reminds me of a target..something for bad guys to aim for…

  3. i stll think Colin Fergison would make a Pretty Good Cap.
& as for a bucky Spin-off, i’d say no thank you.
BUT if the Spin-off was about him as winter soilder i would say say HELL YEAH !

another thing i noticed and most hardcore fans probly saw it that we will see sum more cross-bones Action in these new issues of cap.

    this Pleases me.

i know it wil never happen, but am i the only one who would like to see a
    CrossBones movie?

  4. So who are the true main candidates for the role? Haven’t really heard of this, except for some “rumors”.

  5. We just need a generic big buff blonde pretty boy to fill Cap’s shoes… I’d prefer an unknown actor but this will probably not be the case…

I always thought Marc Blucas: Riley from Buffy, would make a good Captain America

  6. I dunno. I really don’t like McChonnehy or however you spell it, he just doesn’t look it to me. That said, I don’t really know who I’d have play him. Pitt is too old, too. Cap needs to be in his early 30′s, late 20′s.

  7. I wish we had a better idea who the candidates for Cap are.
there has literally been NO NEWS on casting.

  8. I completely agree with Shamose, Marc Blucas (the guy from Buffy) would make a great captain America…he’s not too well known of an actor which is a plus and he is a pretty fair actor…come to think about it looking back on the episodes that he was in on Buffy he did have that great sense of patriotism and heroism is character, Riley, on the show.
I stand STRONGLY behind McChonnehy not doing this, I doubt the studio will even ask him..

  9. Marvel has said the actor will be in the age range of 20-30s and a A-B listers so for me the list would be the following:
    1. Matt Damon-age38 (ref. ‘Bourne’ trilogy)
    2. Leo Decapri-age34 (ref.’Departed’ and ‘Blood Diamond’)
    3. Chris Pine-age28 (ref. ‘Star Trek’)
    4. Nathan Fillion-age38 (ref. ‘Serenity’ and ‘Firefly’)
    5. Matthew McConaughey-age39 (ref. ‘Reign of Fire’ and ‘Sahara’)
    6. Paul Walker-age35 (ref. ‘Fast and the Furious’ franchise)
    7. Mark Wahlberg-age38 (ref. ‘Shooter’ and ‘Planet of the Apes’)
    8. Channing Matthew Tatum-age29 (ref. ‘G.I. Joe’ and ‘Fight’)
    9. Thomas Jane-age40 (ref. ‘Punisher’)
    10. Brad Pitt-age 45 (ref. ‘Troy’ and ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’)

  10. Also guys, in Hollywood years you look ten years young then your actual age.

  11. 1-matt damon— too short
2-leo dicaprio—too thin, would have to bulk up a lot and he has never blunked up for any movie role
3-chris pine–would be good, but hes too short
4-mccnohhey-too much of a sissy man
5-paul walker- looks the role, but i doubt he cant act the role as we have seen from his horrible acting performances
6-wahlberg–way too short and would be a laughing stock as cpt america
7-thomas jane-balding and even so does not have the facial chracteristics of cpt america
8-bradd pitt- would have been my choice if he was younger, he might be good for the 1st movie, but im sure they will want liek a decade of sequels and i dont think u want a 55 yr old man playin cap

  12. @ tasouli:
Remember height and muscle build does not matter as long as his not 4′ high, lol. Look at Hugh Jackman as wolverine and the comic wolverine is 5’3″or less. Not to mention Hollywood has ways around height. Films like the ‘Green Mile’ and TLOTR trilogy height use that Hollywood height magic. For the build, remember Steve Rogers was sickly and wimpy before the super soldier serum.;)

  13. I think Tom Jane would look good for Cpt. America. And they should definitely keep the color scheme of the costume, just dampen the colors a bit so it’s not so bright, it’ll be believable. He’s named Cpt. AMERICA, it’s not so far fetched that he would try to put the Red, White, and Blue in there. They could say the scales he has are overlapping ceramic pieces that helps armor him against stuff…

And I find it weird that Marvel would use Cpt. AMERICA as propaganda to support a president that wants to change everything that makes the United States of America different from other countries, basically what makes us what we are. I wonder if they realize that our differences are probably what allowed the USA to rise to the position of superpower in just over 200 years… Sounds like a long time, but think of how long other countries have existed… So in my opinion, those “differences” were actually what made us BETTER. Now we’re trying to imitate other countries…

And somehow Cpt. AMERICA supports this?? Sounds counter-intuitive…

  14. @ Adrian

I still believe that Hugh Jackson was an unconventional choice for Wolverine…he was also nothing like teh wolverine in the comics, the wolverine in teh comics was dark with a MAJOR attitude and he was a soloist..hugh jackson’s wolverine was quite the opposite…although I feel taht this was neccessary to teh film because you DONT want your lead character to be a small, wimpy guy…

Now I do agree that the camera can be manipulated to make an actor appear to be taller, as it is often done for major movie actors such as Tom Cruise and Mark Wahlberg, but here with Captain America we want the character to be an almighty powerful looking individual off and on film.
And Yes Steve Rogers was a frail and thin person, but he will not be like taht for long in the movie, so we need a a character of great height and mass, one that towers over people, in my opinion.. cause lets not forget this isnt just a movie, this guy represents america (haha really cheezy i know)
Needless to say I do agree with you Adrian on some level but not in full

  15. About time Steve Rogers came back. I am surprised, however, that Marvel isnt doing the rebirth thing on July 4th.

  16. If they cast Matt Damon i’ll shoot myself. Too short, too runty, too ugly – not exactly the “ideal” American. With all the legal growth enhancers available in the U.S it shouldn’t be hard to find an unknown six footer who can act and then build him up for a few months.

  17. @ Michael Claymore

I agree Matt Damon would be a HORRIBLE choice for Captain America…not saying that he is a bad actor, I actually thinks he’s a great actor, just doesnt have the all american look of cap

  18. Frankly, I just don’t want McConaughey. Or Cena. Other than that, I could deal with almost anyone I’ve heard. Well, I could do without Tatum and Walker.

  19. Scott Speedman

  20. Live Casting for The Ultimates:

Captain America: Cole Hauser or John Cena
    Iron Man: Robert Downey Jr
Giant Man: Matthew McConaughey or Josh lucas
    Wasp: Lucy Liu
    Hulk: Edward Norton
    Thor: Zakk Wylde
Black Widow: Milla Jovovich (she can do those stunts for real)
    Hawkeye: Justin Hartley
    Falcon: Morris Chestnut
    Genereal Ross: Sam Elliott
    Dr Betty Ross: Liv Tyler
    Nick Fury: Samuel L. Jackson

  21. I cant wait for the up coming marvel movies, i dont care wot the critics say, its about wot u think not them. The ones iv seen so far have blew me away. Captain America – My preffered choice to play Captain America would be John Cena coz hes got the skills, the looks, the build and passion to be the MAN. I dont think they could find a better man, so Marvel you wont have to look far.

  22. I thinking in the casting of captin america the wwe star jon cena would fit well in that roll or the soap star steve butron from general hostipal would fit to if you look at captain amercia and picture them as him what do you guys think

  23. As much as John Cena may look the part (I personally think he’s a little TOO buff. Cap is buff but he’s just as APT and coordinated so he doesn’t need to be a bulky beast), but I don’t know if he could act the part as wholesomely as is required. Not to mention it’ll just be weird.

There aren’t many people that I’m comfortable with when it comes to playing Steve Rogers. Thomas Jane would be okay, but it may be a bit weird considering he’s already the Punisher.

And don’t get me started on Matt Damon.

  24. I would have said Aaron Echhart as Capt America would have been great but he is past his prime. They may have to just go with a fresh face all together cuz the guy who portrays Capt Amercica is going to have to have the “All American Blonde Athlete from southern California” look. Honestly if they are going again the blonde guy from southern california then they need to go with someone like Sean Faris (played in Never Back Down). He could do ok as an american hero type. Just as long as the final candidate is not Ben Affleck. Oh wait I got it ya’ll. Damien Lewis from “Band of Brothers”. For you, who don’t know him from that he also played on the “Life” tv series on NBC. Think about it!! He is still young, has an athletic look and act with the kind of leadership composer that would be great to head the Avengers.

  25. If not, clean up Paul Walker and put him in “Old Glory” colors so we have a fairly decent movie.

  26. Chad Tatum would not be too bad as a Capt America candidate. As long as he can keep his pant up above the crack of his rear and quit talking with a gangster mentality.

  27. @Hunter

I don’t think Tom Jane would be weird, I never thought he looked the part for Punisher anyway, so I wouldn’t even think about the Punisher when I see Tom Jane…

  28. Marvel should take a page from The Watchmen casting. Enough of the star vehicles! Cast unknowns, based on acting and looks. Rorsach was unknown, now he’s freddy Krueger! Capt. America should be exactly who the army would’ve chosen for the super soldier program circa WWII.

  29. How about the Rock. He is just as big as Cena but a better actor. He doesnt have to be a white guy. Or maybe Sam Worthington (Marcus from T4)He has the build and did a good job with his roll in T4.
