Captain America set photos reveal costumes and Hydra vehicles

It’s Marvel set photo day! A few hours ago we posted the first look at January Jones in costume as Emma Frost on the set of X-Men: First Class, and now comes photos from another Marvel epic also currently shooting in England, Captain America: The First Avenger.

The new photos do feature Captain America in full costume, filming motorcycle scenes but it’s not Chris Evans we see suited up in superhero gear, but rather his stunt double. The photos include Cap’s U.S. Army Indian motorcycle, a pair of Nazi space-age armored Hydra bikes and a neat car.

The first thing you’ll notice is that the stunt actor looks very different than Evans, at least in terms of their faces. The second thing that sticks out is the costume that the stunt double is wearing and how it doesn’t look very “real” compared to the concept art we’ve seen but rather cheaper, Halloween-esque materials and components.

This is likely due to them shooting some vehicular action sequences and wide shots where movie magic can do its work. Again, I’ll provide the obvious forewarning that you shouldn’t judge the movie based on these images. They’re simply set photos and are not representative of what this scene(s) will look like in the theatrical release of Captain America: The First Avenger.

The images, courtesy of The Daily Mail, do let us know that Captain America will be sporting his side-arm and a classic Thompson machine gun, as can be seen holstered in the front of the bike. You can also see the wings painted onto Cap’s helmet. Keep in mind that Steve Rogers will have more than one Captain America costume in the movie and we can expect a more sleek and modern design to show up later in the film.

We can also see the Hydra logos on the sides of the two Nazi futuristic motorcycles and on the front of the roadster. Hydra is the terrorist organization bent on world domination and are the nemesis organize to S.H.I.E.L.D., the folks who bring our favorite heroes together, including Captain America, to form The Avengers. Hydra is years ahead of its time in technology due to alien hardware they discovered during WWII so that storyline from the comics could factor into the Captain America film.

Expect the Captain America solo introduction film to lay the foundation for what could be the villains of The Avengers and of the potential SHIELD movie. We also know there will be key elements featured in the movie that will tie into the Thor’s story and the realm of Asgard.

What do you think of the vehicle designs?

Chris Evans stars alongside Neal McDonough’s Dum Dum Dugan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes. Captain America is of course, directed by Joe Johnston.

The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.

  1. Hey look! It’s the chubby stunt!

    • the sunt guy is not actually chubby the suit has padding inside

      • Dan I don’t think anyone is calling him chubby because of a padded suit. Take a second and triple look at his chin… err chins.

        • well he just said chubby nothing about his face Daniel F he could of said he got a chubby face then i agree but he said “It’s the chubby stunt”

anyway i cant wait to see the actually trailer for this movie also i hope they mention that the shield is made from vibranium that will be a hint to Black Panther hold land Wakanda

  2. Oh my god, nostalgia time. This is how the costume is supposed to look here and it should look even better in film.

Bring it on 2011 and 12

  3. It all looks fine to me.
Always fun to see images from the set.

  4. Phew! Thanks for the clarifications! I was quite bothered by that first photo.

  5. looks great, just use movie magic to make the stunt look like cris ad we are good.

  6. I look forward to seeing this movie even though I was never a big Cap fan.

  7. Captain America’s a fat guy?

  8. Not too sure about the hydra vehicles but a motorcycle chase scene sounds very Indy Jones like :D

  9. I am glad there are “wings”

    • Yeah, I was going to point that out to the purists who’ve been freaking over the possible lack of wings.

      Vic

    • WINGS YESSS

  10. I want this to succeed but it has Daredevil quality Epic Fail written all over it.

  11. I’m excited about this but no where near as as excited as that stuntman! Geez! Dude’s saluting with no hands in both pics where the girls are close to him. Ok, well I can see why he’s smiling, the girl with the short hair does look good from BEHIND. :p

  12. hahahahaha last picture on the right……… HE’S HAPPY!!!!!! lol.

helmets a little shiny though. but im fine, itll look better on screen i guess

  13. Cool..

  14. Very pleased with the vibe here. The bike and weaponry–the car–it will make for a very different kind of comic book movie and I think it’ll be more immersive because of that. If anyone has ever played Ultimate Alliance 2 or seen the Avengers animated movies from Marvel then you know Cap is pretty commanding in tone and dialogue. Just hope Evans has the chops and Wolfman has the foresight. Pics look great tho!

  15. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again… This movie is gonna bomb.It is going to be the next “G.I.Joe”.

  16. Don’t really care for the way the mask/helmet doesn’t fit over his nose. It looks weird with his entire nose hanging out.

Hope the regular costume looks better than stunt costume.

  17. Never was a fan of Cap, but I must say the costume (and the bike) looks pretty god.
Must agree with Daniel tho, the whole helmet gettup looks a bit weird.

But the bad-guy bikers looks completely out of place. I’m half expecting them to have neon lights on their rims, like some lowtech Tron wannabes or some 90s Batman villain.

  18. From these pics and the comic con footage, I’m starting to get an Indiana Jones feel for this movie, and that is absolutely a good thing. The costume isnt as bad as I originally thought.

    • That’s exactly how I described the SDCC footage too :)

      • I’ve only seen a bootleg obviously, but yeah, if thats the vibe they are going for then this could actually work!

        • I disagree. I’m thinkin’ Rocketeer

          • Yeah well, as I love the Rocketeer, that aint a problem for me either!

  19. YYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Spot on Joe Johnston! Those pics are even better looking than I expected. Can’t wait! :D

In what year was S.H.I.E.L.D established? If Howard Stark was a co-founder, how old would he have been? 15?

    • I think Stark is meant to be about 18/19 in this film.

  21. Even though Hydra got their technology from Aliens in the comics, the film may not go with that in the movie marvel universe, but if they do in the Captain America movie, it gives us a hunch on the lengths they’re willing to go to in the Avengers movie. I can see aliens binge in that film, maybe the Skrull? With elements such as Thor and Asgard, i can see them going almost all the distance with these Marvel studios films, starting off with the more credible, Iron Man, and working us into the more fantasy and farfetched elements.

  22. Really….. Fantastic looking. Looks like they will be seamlessly merging the “two” Caps we know. A little from the known Marvel U and from the Ultimate line.

I would have liked to see the shield shield (and still could) however these pics look great.

As for the Hydra bikes and the negative comments… Have you people even read the comics on a regular basis?

    • Nope, I haven’t, so I don’t know how they look in the comics.
But from a practical viewpoint, they look stupid.
Why are they built for speed, but have offroad tyres?
Why don’t they have any bottom plate to protect the exhaust and the other parts down there?
Why are the drivers completely unprotected vs aerodynamic drag?
Also, the machineguns (I guess the tubes on front are machineguns) are stuck to the bike, so to aim, they have to turn the entire bike. Cap on the other hand just needs to turn his handlebars.
Granted, HYDRA may use futuristic alien tech, but that doesn’t explain why the bike design is crap.

The HYDRA car looks more sensible, but that one is also equipped with tractor tyres.

      • “Also, the machineguns (I guess the tubes on front are machineguns) are stuck to the bike, so to aim, they have to turn the entire bike. Cap on the other hand just needs to turn his handlebars.”

Not so fast Guest Star, I would say those whole top mounts turn with the forks rather than the forks turning within the mounts. You wouldn’t have much range of steering otherwise. Additionally these pictures are from a distance and you can’t really tell how the gun barrels are mounted. They could swing a few degrees left and right independently on a yoke inside the mount adjustable from the bars. Look at the road conditions too, dirt and sand. Even if they end up on pavement safety is the first concern. So the tires are something they could change in post. You also have to consider how the action is framed when shot. The tires may not even be in the picture.

I have to commend your desire to keep them honest on this though, it shows a level of passion that I think most everyone feels. By all means keep a sharp eye out, it’s not beyond anyone to miss something. The more eyes on the matter the better!! Some see but won’t even bother to comment. It’s really about one thing, a better picture…

      • Because the Alien material allows them to do that. TADA! :D

They need to go fast off road.

Dont need to the Alien tech/metal is strong enough.

They are replaceable minions. They are what Expendable truly means.

They use projectiles that can trace the target if close enough once locked in via the camera in their helmet.

        ;)

  23. OMG—HORRIBLE–Marvel goes cheap, and lives to regret it–HORRIBLE

  24. Love the bikes…. Cap unfortunately looks like a dork. Side note: “dork” is also used to describe a whale’s penis.

  25. I’m thinking it looks great all of it im not even worried about the Stunt, and knowing we get diffrent Cap costumes his nose not being covered here does not really bother me i cannot wait! Keep up the great work Joe! and bring on some pics of the Red Skull

  26. These designs totally work. The stuntman is just wearing a quick throw on version of the uniform,Chris Evans will look more sleek and fitting in the uniform I’m sure. I’d just like to see some HYDRA commandos wearing all GREEN. So far so good though, those HYDRA designs really look like real Nazi “futuristic” inspired designs that they were making. Even “Kroenen” from Hellboy #1 looked very similar.

  27. I wonder how the future costume is gonna look?

  28. Well, I’m glad they are having him be armed instead of going with the hippie weenie “I’m not going to be armed even though I’m in the middle of a big World War” version that makes no sense…

    • Ken J,

I don’t know for sure, but I think the original Captain America carried a gun way back when the character was first introduced.

      Vic

      • vic,

captain america never used a gun. only recently have people drawn him with one.

        • Thanks, Andrew. Like I said, I wasn’t sure. I’m not that familiar with the character, especially the original version.

          Vic

        • @Andrew

Are you sure? Because I was referring to how I remember seeing old comic covers of Captain America where he has a side-arm but how more recently they’ve gotten rid of that aspect… Weird, I’ll look it up…

          • Ken J I’m no Captain America expert, but I’m fairly certain that you are correct. I seem to recall some very old Cap comics with him having a gun. However it wasn’t recent that they got rid of it. I know he hasn’t had one since at least the late 70′s. Recently he’s actually had one, but only because someone else was in the costume.

I do agree though I think it was some of the first few Cap comics he had a gun. It’s dumb for Captain America to be in WW2 and not have a gun. Just doesn’t make sense.

  29. That *IS* the second costume…the first one is the spandex-and-buccaneer look from the comics. Remember, it’s supposed to look like something made from WWII-era materials (no kevlar, etc.).
