First Look At Captain America’s Costume [Updated]

[Update: Check out the first images of Cap's Movie Costume below!]

[Update 2: Also check out the Thor movie costume images!]

There are two things that, if done incorrectly, can “make-or-break” a super hero movie: The actor chosen to play the lead and the look of the costume. This is doubly true for the upcoming Marvel super hero film Captain America: The First Avenger.

After much debate, hearsay, rumors and speculation, Marvel Studios and director Joe Johnston (The Wolfman) decided on Chris Evans in the iconic role of Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, and Hugo Weaving as the villainous Red Skull. However, even if Evans nails the role but the costume isn’t on-point – then the film is sunk before it starts.

Those lucky SoBs Our friends at JoBlo were fortunate enough to get a special look at the first test costume for Captain America – and from their description, it doesn’t sound half bad.

According to the JoBlo, Johnston recently talked with the LA Times about Cap’s outfit revealing there will actually be two Captain America costumes – one designed by the Army for his stint in the USO and the one he wears while on active duty as Captain America.

JoBlo’s description is of the latter – we’ve included this excerpt describing the torso and head:

“The first thing I noticed is that the trademark wings that flank the side of Cap’s hood are gone. In fact the “hood” is gone entirely. In its place is a more traditional M1 Army helmet though this helmet does come over the eyes to give Cap a traditional “domino mask” look. Still present is the white “A” in the middle of the hat (nothing fancy, this is the traditional font), though like the rest of the costume, the blue of the helmet is much more muted than the blue in the comic costume. A thick black strap comes down over the ears and connects under the chin.

Cap is wearing a blue neck piece but from what I saw, it’s hard to tell if this is connected to something under the helmet or whether it’s something like a turtleneck (I’m gonna guess the latter).

On his chest still lies the white star though it’s not as prominent as the comic version. The costume is still split horizontally through the middle with blue on top and red and white stripes on the bottom. But instead of stripes, it’s actually just a white base with two red utility straps acting as stripes. These straps affix to a metal loop at the midpoint of the chest and a black strap extends up to the shoulders from that point.

His shoulders have pads over them that extend down to about mid-bicep and are attached via a brown strap under the arm. The sleeves (for lack of a better word) are white with a fairly standard brown glove.”

You can read the rest of the description, including pants and shield, at JoBloHERE.

Update: AICN has shared some art of Cap’s movie costume, which has been confirmed by JoBlo as the costume they were describing above. The images were submitted by AICN reader “Broly’s Legend” and I’d say the results are pretty spectacular. If this is truly the costume we’re getting in the movie, I think (at least most of us) can breath a little easier:

For more images of the costume (including action poses) you should head over to AICN.

In my mind, there’s some World War II authenticity to the outfit, some color mixed in and a few things added and/or removed to make the costume more believable. For the most part, I am OK with that and it all sounds pretty decent. Personally, I’m glad they removed the white wings from his helmet but kept the iconic white “A”.

The description sounds a lot like the suit Cap wears in the comic series Captain America Reborn.

What are your thoughts on how Captain America’s costume is shaping up (according to the description and artist concepts)? Does it sound like they’re moving in the right direction?

  1. no wings? yes!

  2. We should see 3 costumes at best. #1 U.S.O Captain America costume #2 Official Captain America WWII uniform #3 New Official Captain America uniform for the Avengers Initiative(Avengers movie) For the new Avengers uniform,I WOULD like to see the trademark wings but not painted on but cleverly designed, the WWII uniform should’nt have the wings at all anyway.

    • Notice the first pic above that has a very anime(video game)style to it, it looks great but notice his head looks incomplete. The wings needed to be there even if they’re woven in or painted.

  3. So far so good. As long as they don’t remove the red, white and blue color scheme to Caps’ uniform or move too far from it’s original design.

  4. Sounds bad to me. Cap’s costume is perfect as is. I’m not feeling these changes at all.

    • The comic-book costume would look way too gaudy and unrealistic in a live-action WWII film.

  5. Sound like it’s gonna look like a right load of crap!I’ll bet the proper costume doesn’t look good either.

  6. I don’t get the negativity this isn’t suppose to be what capt wears now it’s the WW2 outfit and to me it sounds nearly identical to the comics with only one or two very minor Tweaks. Honestly the wings look dumb anyway and even if u like they might still make the avengers just not WW2 capt. It makes sense that way any how. He was a soldier in WW2 no matter what serum u put in him or how u dress him up he was first and formost a soldier back then not a super hero it’s nit about adding fancy wings it’s just about stopping the Nazi bastards.

I swear some of u just want to complain about every detail. The only thing I see wrong with the film so far is Chris Evans. The costume sounds like the comics. Joe isn’t a great director but he isn’t horrible either this could be the movie that shows his ability most of his movies the problem wasn’t the directing more along the lines of script or acting.

    • @ Daniel f, I agree with ya there. I too notice people in here nitpick about little details about whatever movie is talked about. They’re just movies, and i watch alot movies including TDK where things dont turn out the way they look in reality etc. Sometimes i feel people are too difficult to be impressed. I’m just gonna wait to see Captain America before passing judgement on his supposed costumes.

  7. IMHO, one think director Johnston has always excellent taste in chose is the right costume designer for all is films. I believe the costume sounds perfect for functionality and time frame. As a fan, Johnston directing may vary in oppinion, but just check out ‘The Wolfman’ and ‘Rocketeer’ for costumes and you will not be disappointed.

  8. Cap’s costume in Captain America Reborn seems okay to me. Still, I want to see the actual actor wearing the actual costume. Only then will the people know whether it’s good or not.

  9. I can’t comment on how the suit looks with out seeing it first. I think that for the updated “AVENGERS” Movie costume they should go with the one he wore in the “Ultimate Avenger” animated movie. That exact suit !! I have to agree the wings always looked dumb.

  10. Ultimate Cap!!!

  11. Capt America for President 2012!

    Let’s purge the infil-trators!

    8-)

  12. Some fellow soldier will probably get a-hold of Caps. helmet and paint the wings on it, after a particular heroic scene. It’ll be taken good naturedly with a little chiding and stick in Caps. mind from then on, becoming the famous or infamous, depending what you think of it moniker.

I think they might intend for the mask and tee shirt to be all in one piece. That’s my impression anyway. The only other possibility would be the hood sown into what is still called a Dickie Turtleneck which lays over the chest shoulders and shoulder blades under an over shirt…

  13. Hey guys, so I totally found this picture that looks exactly like the description…im really excited if this is the WW2 battlefield suit…here’s the link.

    http://www.ifanboy.com/files/images/marvel/Ultimate%20Captain%20America.jpg

  14. yea so from what we know. The uso suit is still probably going to be classic straight up jack kirby look. which joe stated a few months ago. As for the battlefield suit. It does sound like it will be a modified ultimates world war 2 style suit. Which could look good on screen. I cant wait to see how everything looks and all that on screen. Then of course leave modern look for what they have steve in for avengers in present day.

  15. I’m very glad they got rid of those wings. They were probably the single worst thing about the classic costume. I wouldn’t mind a painted-on version of them though.

  16. Im not a fan of the wings but in the ultimate avengers films(animated films) he didnt have them and he looked preety wierd

jst my opinion but I dnt know how the costume will look on the big screen, I’m sure it will look awesome though, lol if it’s a rubber suit Bring On The Nips

    • I agree the helmet version shouldn’t have wings but the hooded version or “cowl” should, it looks incomplete without out it.

  17. To me it will be ok as long as there is no drastic changes meaning something like a black superman suit….Cap is my favorite superhero so i am hoping that they wont mess him up. So far I think they are going the right direction but we will see when it comes out.

  18. I think that they are going to do the original captain America suit like the first issue…in fact I think that the USO show is going to have a little skit type thing to intro steve and a hitler lookalike will come out on stage and captain america will come out and hit him. Then later in the movie they will show a newspaper with this picture taken, as a nod to the orignal art and book.

  19. Bad idea !!!! Casting choices are horrendous. How are they gonna have Chris Evans to have the same body as Captain America? Fake CGI muscles or steroids?

    • Evans is known for his ability to buff up; look at FF4 2.

      • Yeah, they never would CGI to enhance the physical appearance of a superhero character in a movie. Tobey Maguire was really that buff….

I just don’t understand how they would dress up a top-secret soldier in red, white and blue and send him to the front.

  20. I’m pretty much in concurrence with Daniel F. The costume seems almost perfect if you know anything about Captain America in WWII. I really see no grounds of complaint, as he’s almost entirely sticking to source material there. The only inconsistency is that the shield is reported to be circular instead of badge-shaped. But I don’t think that’s right, as in Iron Man, the shield sin’t even complete yet. So I almost guarantee they’re going to use the Classic shield in the movie, despite what JoBlo’s report said.

Like Daniel said, Chris Evans seems like the only potential weak point so far. I just feel like he’s too young-looking for the role. I think he can certainly be capable with the muscles (Cap doesn’t have to look like John Cena, you know), but he doesn’t have the chin to make him really LOOK like Steve Rogers. He may very well have the acting chops for it, but appearance-wise, I don’t think he’s going to sell the “Steve Rogers” thing for me.

I really, really hope he does, but I just don’t expect it.

  21. Sounds pretty good to me, but it is still too early to judge this intel.

  22. i cant believe almost everyone dissed the wings as if they were crap everyone always says the A is the iconic part to cap and true that may be but the wings are just as iconic if not more so(the most iconic cap acessory is his shield though)

  23. I’m sorry but the wings are not that iconic non comic fans wouldn’t probably even know about the wings. Most people who know who cap is but are not obsessed would say the shield, the A , the star and the color scheme. Take a look at most recent main stream exposure to cap and ull see that’s all there but the wings are not. They are lame cheesy and serve no purpose.

  24. they serve the symbolic purpose of what caps all about FREEDOM!!!!

  25. Rofl they don’t symbolize freedom they symbolize America hence them being eagle wings. Cap has plenty of American symbolism on his suit that he doesn’t need cheesy as lame wings. They are the least important part of the costume. It would be a big deal to take away the shield, to change the colors, or remove the giant star. Taking away a cheesy lookin set of wings from the side of his head is a positive. Capt looked great in the ultimate avengers cartoon because of it.

    • @Daniel f.Why do you think that “the eagle” is used for the American symbol? Because the eagle is used a symbol of FREEDOM! Like David said. Daniel F., where are you from, you talk like as though your from another country other than America. It’s your opinion and I respect it but some of the newer costumes are “ok” with out the wings but they just looks imcomplete without them. I think it’s ok to various versions of his costume even without the wings BUT his most ICONIC feature INCLUDES THE WINGS!

      • Next you know they’ll be getting rid of the “A” symbol!!!!The U.S. Agent uniform is the one that should neither have the wings nor the “A”.

        • Testy testy…. we’ve all got opinions and that’s good it defines our individuality. My opinion is that cap can start out with army green but in the evolution of his costume feel the wings are very symbolic of who he is and who he will become….CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!….everything on the costume is symbolic…like the stars on the flag should we remove a few because they’re cheesy

  26. Of course the colors are muted. The colors are always muted….*grumble*

  27. People complaining about wings? WTF. It’s WWII. No one should expect the iconic costume in this movie. If anything, it’ll show up in The Avengers a la 2012. Tony Stark will probably create his vibranium/adamantium shield since the prototypes that his father made were shown in IM and IM2.

  28. If you think about it. At this point it doesn’t really matter what the costume looks like because once they get to editting if it doesn’t look right they will go to cgi and make it look however they want. And if Evans isn’t up to par with his physic they will give him a lil nip and tuck too. I could care less either way. As long as the final result is a fun Capt. America movie to watch.

Also does anyone remember about 20-25 years ago when they had a B rated Captain America movie that wasn’t a cartoon? He had a motorcycle. Wouldn’t mind taking a look at that again.

  29. this looks like a complete failure for the costume.don’t obsess about the actor, chris evans will do a fine job. whoever is designing this costume will cause this movie to fail.remember the movie is about captain america created by marvel comics so design a costume that looks like captain america from the comic book or this entire movie will be ruined.
