[Update: Marvel has confirmed that Evans is playing Cap. See the press release below.]

Today we reach the anti-climax of the Captain America casting fiasco, with The Heat Vision Blog exclusively reporting that actor Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, Push) has accepted the role of Marvel’s star-spangled Avenger, in the upcoming origin film, The First Avenger: Captain America.

This report comes just on the heels of the news that Evans had been offered the role of Cap and after a weekend of anxiety that the search had come to an end, THR’s sources reveal that he has in fact accepted the offer.

There was some minor concern that Evans’ previous commitment to filming the rom-com What’s Your Number? with co-star Anna Faris may conflict with Captain America’s shooting schedule which begins this June. However, that and potential hesitation due to having previously played another high profile Marvel superhero were overcome and Evans quickly came to negotiations for the part.

Chris Evans is now a poster boy for the future of Marvel. He’s not just a World War II hero, he’s the leader of The Avengers for years to come. As those who have been following the Captain America news know, the deal Evans has reportedly accepted is a 9-picture contract which sets him up for at least a trilogy of Captain America films, a trilogy of Avengers films and other appearances in future Marvel projects.

The plan for casting the title character in The First Avenger: Captain America was initially to get an unknown and surround him with stars and veterans, but after testing every young fit actor in the world and having the vast majority of them shot down by fans and blogs everywhere, Marvel and director Joe Johnston decided on an actor very familiar with the comic book genre. As we know, Evans played the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four franchise and has roles in The Losers and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World which both release later this year.  Bringing the comic book theme full circle, Scott Pilgrim is directed by Edgar Wright who of course, is helming Ant-Man for Marvel Studios.

Evans will stand beside Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in the most ambitious comic book movie ever, come 2012, and it’s a joyous time for fans. Let’s hope Ed Norton gets up there with them as Bruce Banner/Hulk. And maybe Ant-Man too…

Update: Check out an excerpt from the official Captain America press release that was issued by Marvel Studios:

Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that Chris Evans will star as Captain America in the studio’s highly anticipated movie THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA directed by Joe Johnston from a script penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel, Stratton Leopold and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

In addition to THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including the highly anticipated sequel, IRON MAN 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, THOR on May 6, 2011, and THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.

For me, Evans is a very likable guy and he certainly keeps in shape. My only concern is how he plays the character; I don’t want the fast-talking witty comedy relief that we’ve seen from most of his career so far – We need the classy charming more serious character from Captain America and save the comedy for Roberty Downey Jr. when they meet up.

Now that it’s official, what do you think of Chris Evans playing Captain America opposite Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull?

The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.

  1. Check out this fan made Avengers poster with Evans as Cap.

    You like?

  2. he played two superheroes already, and was terrible in both roles. not a good choice IMO.

  3. I like Evans as a actor, but I just don't see him as Cap yet.Maybe that will change,or maybe not, either way,I honestly feel like they “settled” on him and got tired of searching.

I think the one thing that is an absolute must,is that they need to redesign the suit.Nothing radical in the costume changes as far as color scheme(obviously),but definitely a combination of major tweeks and minor ones in certain areas.

The two main things that “I” feel need to go are the swashbuckler boots and the wings on the mask.I would like to see them keep the scales, but only if it looks cool.

I would like to see a little less of this…

and a little more of this…

One more thing about the casting, how is it that John Cena never became a serious contender for the role? He's definitely got the look for the part, and I would say more so than any one else that was ever mentioned.

And as for his acting ability,I wouldn't say he's a great actor by any means, but he's definitely serviceable.Besides, how much acting range does it really take to pull off Captain America?

    Anyway,that's my 2 cents.

  4. HELL NOOOOOO! Is Johnson out of his freaking mind? This guy is a TERRIBLE actor! Fantastic Four, anyone?! That guy couldn´t act even if someone points a shotgun at him! Terrible choice! This will mess up the whole Avengers thing.

  5. Obviously noone here reads Marvel comics. The reason so many comic book fans are mad is because of two reasons. The first is obvious, and that is that Evans already has a solid role as Johnny Storm a.k.a “The Human Torch” and, as anyone that follows comics will know, Reed Richards a.k.a Mr Fantastic who is the leader of the Fantastic Four is a member of the Avengers. Because of the role he had already taken up, Evans character already cemented in the Marvel universe is going to confuse audiences. Plus, if they ever make a Civil War movie its really going to through a wrench into the works. Secondly, Evans neither has the body type, or the attitude to present himself as Cap. We need someone buff, sly, clever, and way less cheesy. I have many suggestions. Jared Padelecki, Thomas Jane would be perfect since his role as The Punisher is forgotten, Chatum Tatem has the body if he could cement himself as an actor a little more, I even liked Jon Hamm (Mad Men) being offered the role (though Id like to see him as Winter Soldier) and he doesnt even have blonde hair!

It has to be a good movie and you know its going to be an origin story, but Evans character should be played by an actor that will be able to Outdo Robert Downey Jr and Edward Norton because Cap is the leader of the Avengers and Evans doesnt have the street cred to do it. The Avengers movie will be “Iron Man and the Avengers.”

  6. Well obviously you haven't kept up with the times.

  7. I disagree with many posters that Evans is a bad choice. He is an actor, which means he is suppose to portray characters. I think he does have the body for it (although I would like it if he were taller) and I believe he has the ability to act the role of a patriot. Time will tell.

  8. In what way am I wrong here please explain this to me…

  9. I am very relieved they made the official announcement about Evans today .
I guess they were waiting until they had both Cap and Bucky .

  10. I don't see him as C. America, and what about the “we want a not-known actor” that they said before =S

  11. Not sure what to think still, but then I'm somewhat on the fence on this movie as a whole with everyone involved save probably Hugo Weaving, which I was quite happy to hear about as he's a very good actor IMO. The director has directed several films I've seen, but the only one I can say was rather good would be October Sky. As for Chris, I am willing to give the man the benefit of the doubt. I've never really seen anything he was in, not even the FF films, so I can't really comment on his abilities though some comments from people seem to indicate that he has stared in some serious roles that he did fine in.

I'll wait till we get some official shots and better yet a trailer until I make further judgements, though I am aware that it will be quite some time before we get any of that.

I do sort of hope that Chris and those involved have some knowledge of the characters or at least do some research for it. If they're fans, even better to me.

  12. This is a bad trend in comic movies. First it was Hannibal King/Deadpool/Green Lantern, now it's Human Torch/Captain America! Is there a dearth of eligible actors out there???

  14. Well I think he's the perfect choice for the role. I've gotten so used to the idea over the course of the last week that I find it hard to picture anyone else as Cap…

Can't wait for more info regarding this film to come out. It's not looking quite as amazing as Thor yet, but who knows what's around the corner…

  15. Nick Peterson

since matt Damon played Jason bourne does that means he can't play another soldier in Green Zone? Since George Clooney was a man in Oceans Eleven does that mean he can't play another man in Up In The Air?

  16. in what universe is matt damon a good choice to play Cap?

  17. I think Timothy Olyphant would have been alright as Captain America, lol.

  18. That makes no sense. Neither the “Green Zone” or “Up In The Air” tie into the Bourne or Oceans universes. Moreover, on a stage as large as the Marvel Universe is, you cannot confuse audiences with an actor being a doppleganger. Think of it as someone who may have never seen any of the FF4 movies. Think of it like someone who has an interest in the FF4 movies but doesnt read comics and goes to see this one. They are going to spend half the movie confused wondering why Johnny Storm was involved in the “Super Soldier” project and why Jessica Alba isn't a headliner.

  19. I have had the same complaint about Ryan Reynolds however most non-comic book readers dont realize that Blade is a Marvel franchise

  20. Well It is too late to complain now. I really have my fingers crossed on this though. I have yet to see him play play any character remotely as complex as Cap should be. There is a lot of stuff to consider and cap is not snarky like all of the other characters we have seen him play. Last Fantastic 4 sucked big time. To those of you complaining that he was the torch well Marvel doesn't or didn't own the rights to F 4 or Wolverine. That is why both those movies sucked.

  21. I personally think that it sucks that this guy is cap. The actor needs to be more serious and more buff, he doesn’t have the body type. The same actor cant play 2 caracters that are envolved in the same universe. the same thing happened with ryan reynolds. its becoming a bad trend , its to late now though, but it sucks!!!

  22. Yea. What if hayden christiansen played anikan skywalker, yoda, Luke skywalker, and the emperor. It just fu&;s everything up

  23. what nick peterson said is true, most people who want to see evans in this movie have most likely never opened a comic in their life. should have been aaron eckhart

heres what cap looks like, and why chris does not fit the role

    http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/5/54950/1204014-captainamerica268_peaceonearth__goo_super.jpg

  24. This is crap Evans is a horrible choice. The only way they could of made a bigger mistake was if they made will smith captain America. Evans is already the human torch and there plenty of young actors they could of chosen. He’s not a serious actor like captain is and I’m disappointed in the directors choice.

  25. This guy is WAY too small to play the pinnacle of human perfection. Entirely too puny. They should have got Chris Hemsworth to play Cap and Tyler Mane to be Thor. Bane, Thor, Cap are all cast to be much smaller than they are supposed to be. Heroes and villains should be larger than life, not built like your unemployed uncle.

  26. Bet you’re all eating your words now.
    He was an AWESOME Cap.

  27. He aaronrite1 shut up you trollbicth! Supernatural is the best show ever! And jensen ackles is the best actor! Chris evans is lame! He cant act! And as aeontie1 i hope your dead troll!
