[Update: Marvel has confirmed that Evans is playing Cap. See the press release below.]

Today we reach the anti-climax of the Captain America casting fiasco, with The Heat Vision Blog exclusively reporting that actor Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, Push) has accepted the role of Marvel’s star-spangled Avenger, in the upcoming origin film, The First Avenger: Captain America.

This report comes just on the heels of the news that Evans had been offered the role of Cap and after a weekend of anxiety that the search had come to an end, THR’s sources reveal that he has in fact accepted the offer.

There was some minor concern that Evans’ previous commitment to filming the rom-com What’s Your Number? with co-star Anna Faris may conflict with Captain America’s shooting schedule which begins this June. However, that and potential hesitation due to having previously played another high profile Marvel superhero were overcome and Evans quickly came to negotiations for the part.

Chris Evans is now a poster boy for the future of Marvel. He’s not just a World War II hero, he’s the leader of The Avengers for years to come. As those who have been following the Captain America news know, the deal Evans has reportedly accepted is a 9-picture contract which sets him up for at least a trilogy of Captain America films, a trilogy of Avengers films and other appearances in future Marvel projects.

The plan for casting the title character in The First Avenger: Captain America was initially to get an unknown and surround him with stars and veterans, but after testing every young fit actor in the world and having the vast majority of them shot down by fans and blogs everywhere, Marvel and director Joe Johnston decided on an actor very familiar with the comic book genre. As we know, Evans played the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four franchise and has roles in The Losers and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World which both release later this year.  Bringing the comic book theme full circle, Scott Pilgrim is directed by Edgar Wright who of course, is helming Ant-Man for Marvel Studios.

Evans will stand beside Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in the most ambitious comic book movie ever, come 2012, and it’s a joyous time for fans. Let’s hope Ed Norton gets up there with them as Bruce Banner/Hulk. And maybe Ant-Man too…

Update: Check out an excerpt from the official Captain America press release that was issued by Marvel Studios:

Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that Chris Evans will star as Captain America in the studio’s highly anticipated movie THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA directed by Joe Johnston from a script penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel, Stratton Leopold and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

In addition to THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including the highly anticipated sequel, IRON MAN 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, THOR on May 6, 2011, and THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.

For me, Evans is a very likable guy and he certainly keeps in shape. My only concern is how he plays the character; I don’t want the fast-talking witty comedy relief that we’ve seen from most of his career so far – We need the classy charming more serious character from Captain America and save the comedy for Roberty Downey Jr. when they meet up.

Now that it’s official, what do you think of Chris Evans playing Captain America opposite Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull?

The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.

  1. It's about bloody time!!! CAP LIVES!!!!!

It's interesting that everyone thinks Cap was a founding member, but he didn't actually appear until issue #4. So there should never be a question as to whether or not Hulk will be in the Avengers movie. However, Hulk doesn't need to be in Avengers 2, because Hulk was only in the first couple of issues and a few annuals, but not much more.

So we have Edward Norton (Hulk), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), what about the other two founding members?

When is Ant- Man supposed to happen? And is that film an official tie-in to the avengers? I heard it will be a little more “kiddie”.

Who will play Henry Pym? And better yet The Wasp?

  2. Not the best choice but not the worst one either. I think there many far better candidates but there were also far worse (John Krasinski for example)

  3. I was just wondering about this, but there's one aspect of the film I hope Evans can use his comedic side to great effect: the time they have Cap with the USO. I don't think it'd have to be any slathered on heavy or anything, but I'm partly hoping they allow him to show sarcastic disdain there. Not so much that it goes against character, but just enough that it's biting and still amusing.

  4. Finally!! A good choice for Cap. Evans has made dramatic roles before, and he probably was the only good thing (along with Micheal Chiklis) about the Fantastic Four.

  5. I don't know about this one. He was a solid Human Torch in fact he was probably the best part about the F4 franchise beside shots of Alba in her outfit. But I'm not feeling him for captain america. He's a natural witty comic type and I don't remember Cap being all that witty rather then militant and bad ass.

  6. I think he looks the part well enough, I just hope that he can act convincing enough to come off as a mature young man from the WWII era. The contrast between when Cap is revived and when he came from is part of what makes Cap appealing to me, so if Chris Evans (or the directors he winds up working with) ruin that… well, 1 less fan won't hurt their wallets too much.

  7. Great news, ……….now let move forward and make a “kick-ass” movie

  8. Well so much for Fantastic Four 3. Not a bad choice but I still don't think it was the right choice. Besides. Who really wants to see 3 Cap movies. If the Hulk with Ed Norton didn't go anywhere, who really thinks that Cap is gonna go past the first movie? He will be big with the Avengers but other than that I will snore through the rest. Thor… right on. A couple of more Iron Man movies… Word. 5 more Hulk movies with Ed Norton… He11 yeah, Hulk Smash!!! More than one Cap and Ant-man movie… It's my nap time. I would really like to see some more FF movies. The Skrulls would have been nice. Oh well.

  9. 'Anti-climax'! Don't be daft mate – excellent choice – proved he could pull off a Marvel hero already & since we lost the FF movies – it's brilliant that he'll be back as the Captain!!! Stop being so negative Screen Rant – it's all going well for Marvel at last….all we want to hear now is Ed Norton is back too !!! Then it's Avengers a-go-go !!!

  10. Not e- Evans is going to hit the gym and put on some major size. I don't know how tall he is, but i hope he's at least 6'3″ tall… CAP was always an imposing character who demanded attention. He won't do justice if he's 5'6″ tall !

  11. Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!

  12. I can se him as Cap, though Im already used to seeing him as Johnny Storm. I just hope he doesnt make cap fast talking like the article says. But then again thats why they call it acting. I think hell do a good job…

and if not we can always get the torches and pitch forks out!

  13. Man, it's about time they settle on who's playing Captain America, now maybe they might start filming soon, sheesh…

  14. This casting definitely slots Captain America into my “wait for the reviews to pour in before seeing” category. I have zero expectations for this film and think Joe Johnson is definitely aiming more for the 1980-1990 Marvel comic movies.

  15. Finally, Marvel can move forward. So many people had little expectations for the Thor movie, and now the hype is through the roof! I expect the same for the Cap movie. As long as Marvel is in creative control I have little doubt this film will blow everyone away.

  16. Ahh, I´m not sure about this. I am sure they will try to make a really good movie. However, I do have concers about this casting decisions. So far, without having seen Evans in anything remotely requiring this kind of character, I don´t really see it. But, we´ll see. Maybe they´ll put something out, like a screen test or something…

  17. Can't please everybody all the time – we all have different views on the comic versions – the movies will be no-different – We live in a time where we got some brilliant Directors coming on board these movies plus all the great effects that bring the comics to life – enjoy it all guys – All the Marvel movies to date have been great-fun even the ones some folk slag off like FF & The Hulk – What do you want…them all back on TV with 'slow motion' as the only effect!?! Lighten-up!

  18. siiigghh…

  19. 9 picture contract thats epic. i log on to this site all the time and it seems marvel are litterally adapting every charcter in to films from the sublime to the ridiculous. Hopefully the world wont end in 2012 and they make the avenger movie. i cant wait to see how a film works with that many lead characters.

  20. why is he playing all the superheros dont get me wrong he is great actor i liked him in street kings and fantastic four and push but eventually this guy will be playing all the superheros. Dont get me wrong he is a great actor but he needs to bulk up and be serious do any of u rember the orginal captain america movie that was horrible because it was to serious u need some comendy in a movie nobody want to watch just a straight serious movie comendy is good.

  21. I hope the CASTING CALL for Marvel Movies is nowhere close to complete at this time because I earnestly want to suggest several ActRESSES (of the sort that would never be considered for Super Heroine and/or Super Villainess roles unless someone spoke up).

When I heard about who had been cast as the Black Widow (for the upcoming Iron Man 2 movie), I was very disappointed. That actress does not have the talent nor the physique to “pull off” the role. Just who would, (I hear you ask) ?? My list appears below, and, in the future, I hope any and all Marvel Casting Calls check with these actresses BEFORE offering Super Heroine and/or Super Villainess roles to anyone else.

    My list is as follows:

Tarra White (you can find her working with GENT)
Sandra Romaine (talk to Tarra, she can find her)
Kagney Linn Carter (all these women know each other)
Puma Swede (again, I say, all of these women know each other)

All of these women are fairly good actresses and all of these women have outstanding physiques that would translate well into the wearing of Super Heroine duds.

I am a GUY (just doing what red blooded guys do) !! If I am going to pay $9 to $12 for a movie ticket, then the least MARVEL could do is cast Interesting Looking Women into the female Super Villainess and Super Heroine roles. Just because the women that I indicated in my list above work in an “alternative” film media, well, let us just say that THAT is no reason to disqualify them from contributing to produce excellent MARVEL movies.

Additionally, several of the women that I have indicated possess genuine foreign accents. Either Tarra White or Sandra Romaine could “do” an excellent rendition of the Black Widow in that both actresses possess genuine and appropriate foreign accents.

  22. Him AND Ryan Reynolds will play all the superheroes you mean 😉

  23. He was really great in “Sunshine”…that was a pretty decent movie…and his role was nothing short of serious.

  24. As amazing and fun as he was as the Human Torch (an inspired choice even), Evans was never quite the Torch as we knew him on the comics page, which was more of a Jensen Ackles, IMO.

    Take note, FF rebooters!

And no, this is not coming from a Supernatural fan, far from it, lol

    • Shut up your wrong i hate the comics anyway they suck! Supernaturl is the best show ever! Your missing out! Dean winchester coukd kick johnny stoms ass any day! IMO jensen ackles is the best actor too! And aarontie1 your a retared troll bye!

    • Its, jensen ! Learn how to spell! Jensen would have been better choice! Those other guys you named were crap!

  25. They clearly say he is going to play Captain America…dont know what article you read, but maybe you read wrong. I doubt they are gonna replace him…it would have been allover yahoo news by now.
