[Update: Marvel has confirmed that Evans is playing Cap. See the press release below.]

Today we reach the anti-climax of the Captain America casting fiasco, with The Heat Vision Blog exclusively reporting that actor Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, Push) has accepted the role of Marvel’s star-spangled Avenger, in the upcoming origin film, The First Avenger: Captain America.

This report comes just on the heels of the news that Evans had been offered the role of Cap and after a weekend of anxiety that the search had come to an end, THR’s sources reveal that he has in fact accepted the offer.

There was some minor concern that Evans’ previous commitment to filming the rom-com What’s Your Number? with co-star Anna Faris may conflict with Captain America’s shooting schedule which begins this June. However, that and potential hesitation due to having previously played another high profile Marvel superhero were overcome and Evans quickly came to negotiations for the part.

Chris Evans is now a poster boy for the future of Marvel. He’s not just a World War II hero, he’s the leader of The Avengers for years to come. As those who have been following the Captain America news know, the deal Evans has reportedly accepted is a 9-picture contract which sets him up for at least a trilogy of Captain America films, a trilogy of Avengers films and other appearances in future Marvel projects.

The plan for casting the title character in The First Avenger: Captain America was initially to get an unknown and surround him with stars and veterans, but after testing every young fit actor in the world and having the vast majority of them shot down by fans and blogs everywhere, Marvel and director Joe Johnston decided on an actor very familiar with the comic book genre. As we know, Evans played the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four franchise and has roles in The Losers and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World which both release later this year.  Bringing the comic book theme full circle, Scott Pilgrim is directed by Edgar Wright who of course, is helming Ant-Man for Marvel Studios.

Evans will stand beside Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in the most ambitious comic book movie ever, come 2012, and it’s a joyous time for fans. Let’s hope Ed Norton gets up there with them as Bruce Banner/Hulk. And maybe Ant-Man too…

Update: Check out an excerpt from the official Captain America press release that was issued by Marvel Studios:

Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that Chris Evans will star as Captain America in the studio’s highly anticipated movie THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA directed by Joe Johnston from a script penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel, Stratton Leopold and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

In addition to THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including the highly anticipated sequel, IRON MAN 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, THOR on May 6, 2011, and THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.

For me, Evans is a very likable guy and he certainly keeps in shape. My only concern is how he plays the character; I don’t want the fast-talking witty comedy relief that we’ve seen from most of his career so far – We need the classy charming more serious character from Captain America and save the comedy for Roberty Downey Jr. when they meet up.

Now that it’s official, what do you think of Chris Evans playing Captain America opposite Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull?

The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.

  1. I think he'll do good but I hope he bulks up.

  2. P.S. Didn't you mean 'Chris Evans is Captain America'? :P

  3. P.S. Didn't you mean 'Chris Evans is Captain America'? :P

  4. I agree with Paul.

  5. Eh, I'm still not sold. I could be wrong about him though. He was one of the only decent parts of Fantastic Four.

  6. He's big enough already. If you haven't seen him in a while he is jacked.

  7. And they didn't stick to their guns with the 300k deal either.

  8. I'm so delighted the search for Cap is finally over. Considering that Chris Evans's charm and sly humor as the Human Torch made both of the Fantastic Four movies watchable, I think he was a good choice.

Looking forward to The First Avenger: Captain America with much enthusiasm (and great relief).

  10. Paul, yeah, thanks. Swapped it. Lot of little glitches here today – must be Gremlins… or too many articles getting pushed out. :)

  11. I thought Evans was the best part about the Fantastic Four; I think he'll do well. I trust in Marvel Studios… they haven't disappointed me yet and I don't see that changing.

  12. Like he was about to turn it down…

  13. Finally its all over. I am totally glad he accepted the role. Also glad we were not going to get kellan lutz or channing tatum. Cant wait to see how rest of casting unfolds.

  14. Sod it! he'l do
just get on with it already

  15. Jessie

Well, supposedly they gave him more than the 300k they were offering so maybe he was on the fence. You never know.

  16. This is a pretty good choice, I'm not elated nor pissed, but more relieved that they didn't pick someone who's completely not suited for the role. I hope he's able to play the serious, charming role perfectly though, but then again Marvel did pick him for a reason. Can't wait to see some screen shots. I'm not surprised he accepted! This will definitely make his career! Any actor in their right mind would take it! It's a chance of a lifetime!

  17. Well when they start considering Channing Tatum for the role, having them choose Christ Evans is probably the best news possible. I think that Hedlund was the favorite, but he doesn't seem all the buff like Evans if now. Evans just has to add on some more muscle within the next 2-3 months(very possible) and he's got the physical part of the role covered. Hedlund looked like he'd need at least 6 months and they plan to shoot this summer so I just don't think he'd have pulled it off. Also I'm guessing there are going to be some complaints about how he is more of a comedic actor, well he's done some serious roles in more independent movies(which I've heard mostly good things about) and Keaton got flak for being a comedic actor but did justice to the role of Batman.

For the situation, I think this was the best decision and I think he'll make a good Captain America and a good leader of the Avengers. Of course, whether or not the movie is any good is determined by the entire cast and the story and the script. Hopefully that part of the pre-production process has gone smooth unlike the casting.

  18. lol

  19. Casting hasn't been bad. Everybody thinks it has because of all the talk about who will be Cap. but it actually is normal. They always do test screenings to see who fits the role best. Hugo Weaving was a great choice as a villain so hopefully he doesn't disappoint. I have a feeling everyone is looking at this the wrong way. I think Evans is more made for the role Cap than Weaving is for Red Skull but that's just my opinion.

  20. good choice. hopefully they did take a little into account of what the fans thought. he has proven he can handle the genre, and he seems like a good actor, as well. that was important. they could have went with Krasinski, who probably would have been decent at the acting, but maybe not the genre. or they could have gone with Tatum, who had the look, but not the talent (my own opinion) to pull it off. best of both worlds here.

  21. I told You! Chris Evans will be a great Cap. He has the talent and he has the frame and body build. Watch he will open his talent bag and gold will flow from it… and you will believe…. His range is amazing and now he will sky rocket ala Hugh Jackman.
Marvel knows what they're doing… sit back and watch, they wanted him for a reason… He is Captain America!

  22. Ehhh, not the worst choice in the world but I think they could've done better as well. I'm glad the rumor mill on this will come to an end but I'm concerned given his film history that he's not the guy for Cap. Cap is pretty much Marvel's Superman, representing everything that is great about America, Evans is a smooth talking, witty guy. In Marvel's favor though, I wasn't sure about RDJ as Ironman so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt here. Heck, even Michael Keaton pulled off the best Batman until Bale came along.

  23. Well at least it's over. I hope my initial doubts will prove to be unfounded. I have really high hopes for this movie. Captain America deserves a great movie…. the past “efforts” that have been released are beyond bad.

  24. I like Chris Evans, I think he's a good actor, but I didn't even consider him as the Cap. It might just be because it'll take me a while to adjust, but I honestly don't think he'll fit… but I'm prepared to be swayed.

  25. I wanted Channing Tatum oooooooooohhhhh well nevermind.

I suppose there is always Flash Gordon, Thundercats (I want to see this film made) or He-Man.

He was born to play a superhero like Captain America nnnnnoooooooooooooo.

I'm looking forward to Eagle of the Ninth, if Channing Tatum gives an outstanding performance (I know he will) and surprises people that thinks he cannot act (I say yes, he can).

I'm going to cry that he lost out on Captain America especially if the stunts are excellent and the film is truly cool (me thinks it will be as directed by Kevin McDonald) again nnnnnnnnooooooo.

I have a strange feeling people are going to start saying it should have been Channing Tatum in the end.

Anyway, stay positive so well done though to Chris Evans glad it's finally settled and looking forward to Captain America.

Now slightly worried about the Director anyone see The Wolfman? I liked it but it didn't get good reviews or make serious money. Hopefully, he will make up with Captain America otherwise, I see him leaving America for good.

This was not the one Channing Tatum there will be others (still have GI Joe sequel, let's hope it's a better sequel by all parties involved but I enjoyed the guilty pleasure of the 1st one).

Ps: Jensen Ackles would have been my 2nd choice.

  26. IMO, Evans is a 4/5 rating for the role of Cap which is probably the best we were going to get anyway. There may be other actors that had a slightly better look, marginally better acting chops, and somewhat of a better build, but Evans has the best combination out of anyone I've heard auditioned for the role. I'm relieved he agreed to the offer.

  27. i dont know, he's an alright actor but i think this role might get to him.
guess we'll have to wait for the trailer to see what he's like.

  28. I agree, carter. He def. has the best combination out of those traits you mentioned. He is more than just a safe choice to me. I think he'll do great and the movies will live up to the hype.

  29. I understand you like Channing Tatum and I don't think he's as bad as most people but I don't think he would have been right for Cap. I feel Evans is a fine choice.
