captain america cast Captain America Casting Updates

[Update: Another candidate drops off the list]

This major announcement over which lucky man will get to portray Captain America is expected to break any day now and as we watch in anticipation, we continue to hear little bits of information on who’s still in and now who’s out.

Yesterday in our Marvel movie news round-up, we talked about a recent tweet from Captain America candidate Chase Crawford where he revealed he’d find out if he gets the role “in a few weeks.” This is apparently a fake Twitter account but Crawford of course is one of several actors named on a reported wishlist of candidates for the role which also included John Krasinski (The Office), Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield), Patrick Flueger (Brothers), Michael Cassidy (Privileged) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy).

Hedlund hadn’t tested for the role as of the report of the candidates and it’s been reported that one fan-favorite actor, Jensen Ackles, was also a contender but has scheduling conflicts with the sixth season of Supernatural.

That’s not all the names speculated and considered though as we also heard talk about Chad Michael Murray, Ryan McPartlin and even Star Trek’s Chris Pine. And these are just the recent names to surface online.

As we know, the choice doesn’t have to fall down on one of the names on the list as we saw with the selection of Chris Hemsworth for the role of Thor.  He was passed over in his first audition but later got the role. In the case of Captain America, we’ve been hearing from two separate sources that Robert Buckley has screentested for Captain America and may be (or was) in talks for the role of his sidekick, Bucky. We tried to get the official on this but was informed that it wasn’t true. We’ll have to wait on that one.

Another name we were told of is that of Toronto-born Neal Bledsoe who has gone in for two separate readings for Captain America. While we’re trying to look more into this one, we do know already that director Joe Johnston confirmed that only an American actor will play the title role. He also said we’d know by March 1st who’s playing Cap so things could change I suppose.

Bledsoe stands approximate 6’3″ and although he sports very dark hair compared to the other Captain America contenders in question, I feel a sense of loyalty in that Bledsoe is Canadian and I’m the only Canadian writer on Screen Rant.

While we can add one or two possible candidates into the mix, we can now remove one as well. Michael Cassidy has tweeted that he’s out of the running by saying “No Captain America For me” a few hours ago.

[Update: Another name drops off the contender list! Scott Porter posted the following on his Facebook page (via io9): "Ain't Cap. Thank you all for the prayers though, I appreciate them all so very much."]

So, it looks like there’s quite a few names to sort through for Marvel Studios and Joe Johnston to decide who fights the Red Skull.

Iron Man 2 opens May 7, 2010, Thor opens May 5, 2011 , The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.

  1. I know I've hit this over and over but Mark Valley IS Captain America. His work on Fringe and now in Human Target is a perfect smaller segue into something larger and iconic. Put in The Valley!

  2. I'm with ya, it's so unfortunate that Marvel wants to go much younger for the character.

  3. Aaauuughghhh!!!! Just tell us already. >:(

  4. what about the guy from human target on fox
    thats cap

  5. what about the guy from human target on fox
    thats cap

  6. I think you mean Mark Valley, who Mike (see above comment) is gunning for.

Unfortunately, he is not in considerations for the role and they're aiming for someone much younger who can pull off the young kid going to war.

  7. You should probably do some fact-checking, because it was revealed the other day when the whole Chase Crawford tweet hit the internet, that Chase Crawford doesn't have a twitter account…

  8. Ya know, it is just as easy to point something out to someone without voicing (or typing in this case) it in a condescending manner.

  9. Just so you know Chace Crawford doesn't have a twitter, he has mentioned it in several interviews, @TheChaceCrawfor and other twitters are fake, so that news is also fake, still hope he is Captain America :)

  10. I'm probably in the minority here, but I still think Ryan McPartlin would be a FANTASTIC pick for Cap. He's just got that natural charisma that you want in a leader, looks the part, and best of all, he's already Captain Awesome.

  11. Even though I like Scott Porter, he is great as Jason Street, he might be similar to who ever Buckey will be. I have to agree with Mike Wilkerson, Mark Valley is Captain America. These cast choices, not really feeling it. Especially, Krasinski, i mean, Come on here!

  12. I'd like to see him or Jensen Ackles. But honestly anymore, I just want to know who they are going to pick. Each one of their candidates has visual characteristics of Cap, but I think that Ackles, McPartlin, Krasinski, and Porter have each showed that they have the acting power for this role. Especially, Ackles in Supernatural and Porter on Friday Night Lights have both showed leadership ability in their acting. I really just want to know who will be cast. March 1st is taking forever getting here.

  13. Ryan McPartlin has the voice.

  14. I am in agreement with mikewilkerson….just cannot find anyone else that looks or could act like Cap.

  15. I'll give Marvel 1,000,000,000 Shrutebucks if they announce who is going to be Cap today.

  16. Sorry, as much as I like the guy, Mark Valley is too short.

  17. Hey Logan,

Links would be great, a better attitude would be even better. We do fact-check but Twitter can be a funky thing. This is not new, heh.

  18. cast one of em already or just go with jack black
    lol

  19. Ah, yeah…well, after re-reading my comment, it does come off as sort of “douchie.” That may or may not be because I was not in the best mood when I posted it. Anyway, I'd be more than happy to post a link (and was actually going to last night) but the article was taken down after it was revealed that the news came from a fake twitter page, HOWEVER, more Captain America news…A Canadian has auditioned for the part (supposedly). This could also turn out to be false, since the director already said they were going with an American, but…well, read for yourself.

Once again, sorry about my irritable post.

  20. No prob, thanks for coming back to explain. Uou should read our stuff on that:

In that same interview, he said we'd know by March 1st who's Cap. It's now March 5th.

    Here's our post on it:

  21. Heh…looks like you already have the news about Captain Canada… Guess I should do some fact-checking of my own.

  22. here is the right choice
    http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2227414/

  23. Chace Crawford for Bucky!!!!!!!!!

  24. Yeah Ryan McPartlin as Steve Rogers aka Captain America and Chace Crawford as Bucky Barnes!!! Sounds right and would absolutely look right too.

  25. And too old…but He'd kick as in a “Captain America, Sentinel of Liberty” t.v series.

  26. tell me he doesnt look the part:

  27. You know what. The only person that I believe could be Cap on the list is Krasinski. He stinks of American Wholesomeness and that is not a bad thing. He was featured on Men's Health a while ago and since Marvel is going for a more “Ultimates” slant, he would be built a lot more like a Special Forces commando than a Juiced up wrestler.

    Check this render out:

I think that is pretty dang spot on.

  28. Jon Favereau and Robert Downy Jr., for the love of God, please help Joe Johnston with this Captain America movie, it's not going to well already. If you guys have friends that read these posts and report them please step in and help this man. It's not going too well.(sounds like a prayer doesn't it?)

  29. Well – whoever finally gets it – it's got to be quite an advancement for his career.

Hemsworth was initially a surprise since I only really recall his role in star trek. He used to be an actor in the crummy aussie soapie “home and away”

    Cheers
