[Update: Another candidate drops off the list]
This major announcement over which lucky man will get to portray Captain America is expected to break any day now and as we watch in anticipation, we continue to hear little bits of information on who’s still in and now who’s out.
Yesterday in our Marvel movie news round-up, we talked about a recent tweet from Captain America candidate Chase Crawford where he revealed he’d find out if he gets the role “in a few weeks.” This is apparently a fake Twitter account but Crawford of course is one of several actors named on a reported wishlist of candidates for the role which also included John Krasinski (The Office), Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield), Patrick Flueger (Brothers), Michael Cassidy (Privileged) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy).
Hedlund hadn’t tested for the role as of the report of the candidates and it’s been reported that one fan-favorite actor, Jensen Ackles, was also a contender but has scheduling conflicts with the sixth season of Supernatural.
That’s not all the names speculated and considered though as we also heard talk about Chad Michael Murray, Ryan McPartlin and even Star Trek’s Chris Pine. And these are just the recent names to surface online.
As we know, the choice doesn’t have to fall down on one of the names on the list as we saw with the selection of Chris Hemsworth for the role of Thor. He was passed over in his first audition but later got the role. In the case of Captain America, we’ve been hearing from two separate sources that Robert Buckley has screentested for Captain America and may be (or was) in talks for the role of his sidekick, Bucky. We tried to get the official on this but was informed that it wasn’t true. We’ll have to wait on that one.
Another name we were told of is that of Toronto-born Neal Bledsoe who has gone in for two separate readings for Captain America. While we’re trying to look more into this one, we do know already that director Joe Johnston confirmed that only an American actor will play the title role. He also said we’d know by March 1st who’s playing Cap so things could change I suppose.
Bledsoe stands approximate 6’3″ and although he sports very dark hair compared to the other Captain America contenders in question, I feel a sense of loyalty in that Bledsoe is Canadian and I’m the only Canadian writer on Screen Rant.
While we can add one or two possible candidates into the mix, we can now remove one as well. Michael Cassidy has tweeted that he’s out of the running by saying “No Captain America For me” a few hours ago.
[Update: Another name drops off the contender list! Scott Porter posted the following on his Facebook page (via io9): "Ain't Cap. Thank you all for the prayers though, I appreciate them all so very much."]
So, it looks like there’s quite a few names to sort through for Marvel Studios and Joe Johnston to decide who fights the Red Skull.
Iron Man 2 opens May 7, 2010, Thor opens May 5, 2011 , The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.
