Toby Jones Is Arnim Zola In ‘Captain America’

Heat Vision Blog broke the exclusive news yesterday that acclaimed Toby Jones – who famously played both Truman Capote (Infamous) and Carl Rove (W) – is going to be joining the cast of The First Avenger: Captain America.

Jones will reportedly be playing Arnim Zola, a classic Marvel Comics villain whose origin is tied to Captain America. Hugo Weaving is already confirmed to play The Red Skull, the main villain of the film.

Hearing this bit of casting news reminds me that I actually know very little about the script for Captain America and what it will involve. I know that it will take place during WWII; will focus on how Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) an idealistic would-be soldier is drafted into a Super Soldier Program; and I know the story arch will basically be about how Rogers goes from being a goverment/military tool to the heroic icon of American idealism we know and love. Until he gets frozen in stasis and wakes up as one of The Avengers, of course.

Currently we’re already up to two villains in The First Avenger, which is essentially an origin film. We also have a love interest, a sidekick, and possible cameos by heroic WWII fighting forces from ye old Marvel lore. Seems like alot going on…almost too much…

But I digress.

Arnim Zola is known in Marvel history as a crazy Nazi scientist who ultimately shifts his consciousness into a robot body as a way to preserve himself long beyond his years. Zola’s primary expertise is genetics, which has led to the creation of several spliced-together heroes, villains and freaks in the Marvel universe.

As far as an actor playing (what I can only assume is) the pre-robot version of Zola, Jones seems like a good fit. He initially gives off a small and unassuming vibe – but as we saw in Infamous and/or W (insert Carl Rove joke), he can use that same meek demeanor to effectively mask a vast and calculating intelligence. I’m interested to see him in Captain America – here’s hoping he’s given a big enough part to work with.

Will we see a post-robot Zola show up later in the Marvel Movie Universe? I wouldn’t count it out (I’m sure Marvel isn’t).

What do you think about Toby Jones playing Arnim Zola? Good fit? Does Captain America seem like it’s getting a little too busy with all these characters?

The First Avenger: Captain America will be in theaters on July 22, 2011.

  1. I haven’t seen this mentioned on SR but this is a good place to mention who else might be in Captain America…

    • not to be negative, but this is reminding me of how it went when the wolverine solo movie was being made…

  2. I think they should make him more of savory villain for the Avengers.

  3. Jon Favreau confirmed that Howard Stark will be in Captain America.

I don’t really mind when films are very complicated – if I like it enough, I’ll pay attention and understand it. If I don’t understand it, then I’ll re-watch it until I do. I don’t consider Spider-Man 3′s over-complication to be one of its flaws, apart from how it took screen-time away from some of its characters.

    • (Sorry, I couldn’t see Zipper Stevens’s link about Howard Stark when I was using Internet Explorer. Might be a glitch of some sort.)

      • That would like a switch in the Iron Man and Captain America movies. Like how Cap’s shield pops up several in both Iron Man’s 1 and 2.

  4. Toby would be good at anything. Seems like a good part, probably not a major role or villain, maybe a sidekick to the Red Skull who was perfectly cast. I would hope there is a lot going on in this movie, because there is a lot to cover because what I believe is Cap was frozen and thawed and then was solo then joined the avengers. So it might have to be a long movie.

  5. yeah I was thinking that back when they said that the Invaders would be in the movie… I think there might be a lot in this movie Captain America. Here is hoping this movie is at least 2 hours and a half.

These are the things that are reported to be in the movie.
    1. Origin Captain America
    2. Origin Red Skull
    3. Bucky
    4. Tommy Lee Jones (Howling Comandos)
    5. Invaders
    6. Arnim Zola
    7. Love Interest
    8. Modern day revival- Avengers tie in (Shield)
    9. Introducing Tony Starks Father

That’s a lot of time spent on all these characters am I missing something? This has to be juggled well. It’s one of the most difficult things to do in movies. Not even Ironman 2 pulled it off that smoothly and that successfully! So here’s hoping it turns out well!!!!

    • I agree with you Wepz, the problem with Iron Man 2 was too much focus on the little stuff and not enough on the BIG stuff, other wise it would have gotten 5 stars and possibly surpass the first. I hope Arnim Zola has a connection with a future villain…..M.O.D.O.K.

  6. There should be a very brief scene in which Phillip Seymor Hoffman also shows up as Arnim Zola.

    • Or have Hoffman as MODOK instead.
