John Krasinski Is (Not) Captain America? [Updated]

[Update: So John Krasinki isn't Captain America but Chris Evans is now in the running!]

Wow, it seems like everybody is getting in on this Captain America casting news – never have I seen hype this big for a super hero role!

The latest word – after weeks of Captain America casting rumors – is that John Krasinski  is Marvel Studios’ favorite prospective Cap and that the role is “His to lose.”

So is Jim from The Office really going to end up starring in The First Avenger: Captain America?

This latest Captain America casting rumor isn’t even coming from the usual culprits on the blogosphere (Screen Rant) but rather from Fox News, of all places.

FOX 411, the entertainment blog, claims to have an insider close to these Captain America casting proceedings and that source is the one claiming that Krasinski is about to land this massive role:

“John has read 4 times and is doing screen tests…He has screen tested 2 times so far.  It’s very likely that he will be the new Captain America.  He is a favorite among the key decision makers and has been asked to come back for more this week.”

“It’s a surprise and we are bracing ourselves for ‘that guy from ‘The Office” to land Captain America.  They are not really looking at the other guys, so it’s time to get ready to work with him.”

For the rest of the exclusive quotes about Krasinski’s standing with Marvel, you’ll have to check out FOX 411.

First of all, shout out to our friends over at Cinematical for calling Krasinski as Cap almost a month ago. Secondly, I like Krasinski a lot, love him on The Office and he showed strong chops in Sam Mendes’ Away We Go last year. He certainly isn’t my first choice for Cap, but then, Chris Hemsworth as Thor wasn’t really on my radar either until it was announced. By now, the idea of Hemsworth playing the God of Thunder has settled in quite nicely.

avengers thor captain america iron man John Krasinski Is (Not) Captain America? [Updated]Hemsworth, Krasinski(?) and Robert Downey Jr. as The Avengers?

Hemsworth and Krasinski onscreen together as Cap and Thor would be a good look for sure, leaving poor Robert Downey Jr. to play the elder Iron Man to these young whipper-snappers.

[Update: Mike Fleming at Deadline has the exclusive that Krasinki and a few other candidates are out of the running and that it’s now down to Mike Vogel, Garrett Hedlund and … Chris Evans.]

On a positive note: having dealt with fanatical white-collar fans thanks to his role on The Office, Krasinski is probably used to appeasing nerds. He’ll be a shoe-in at Comic Con.

We’re going to keep this space open, as I suspect this Captain America casting saga is about to come to a swift close – so CHECK BACK FOR UPDATES!!!!

The First Avenger: Captain America is expected to hit theaters on July 22, 2011.

  1. Ok , I figured it out :)

  2. I wouldn't say that 'no one saw Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man' is an accurate way to put it. He certainly looked the part of Peter Parker to me.

  3. “Of those of you who think this is a bad idea, did you think the same thing when it was announced that Heath Ledger would play the Joker?”

Nope. Not me. I always thought he was an adequate choice – a good fit for the character. For some reason, I just felt good about him being picked. I never knew how good of a pick it was, of course, until I saw it in real life.

  4. That drawing is better looking than the real guy!

  5. im not going to doubt his acting abilities, but he just doesnt look like captain america, sure he could work out like hugh jackman did for xmen origins but he just doesnt have the 'face'… that being said neither id ledger.

i really hope this movie doesnt end up half comedy half action, it should be like ironman, a good story with decent action and an added touch of comedy to put the icing on the cake.

  6. Sooo…. looking at this from the other angle…. Since I am a devoted fan of “The Office”.

I assume they will try to do principal photography during the summer off season, but, How will they explain Jim getting buff and cutting his hair for “The Office” audience?

  7. Liar. No one was thrilled about that except Heath Ledger… and maybe his agent. lol

  8. If true, ….then this casting choice is a major dissapointment for me. I don't mind him in “The Office” but I don't know, I just can't see Krasinski as Captain America at all.

  9. This is all happening because Krasinky is engaged to Emily Blunt from the Wolfman movie…which was directed by Joe Johnson!

  10. This is all happening because Krasinky is engaged to Emily Blunt from the Wolfman movie…which was directed by Joe Johnson!

  11. This is just another nail on the coffin from Joe Johnston's interview to this news. Wolfman sucked. This will suck. I won't be spending my hard earned money on this garbage.

  12. You CANNOT compare Krasinski to Heath Ledger. That's ridiculous. Heath went from a leading man good looks to doing the Joker. You can't take a goof ball that's not very good looking and make him a leading man. The argument that he's an “actor” and can pull it off is flawed.

Extremely poor choice for Captain America.

  13. I'm so done with all of this crap.I'm pretty much sure that I'm not even gonna bother seeing this movie now,no matter who they get.

  14. I was taken aback when Ledger was cast as The Joker, but I trusted/trust Chris Nolan, and the Heath Joker was the best ever!

Now, I don't really trust, nor distrust, Joe Johnston. I think he's a solid filmmaker, but not inspired, like Favreau or Kenneth Branaugh.

I'm going to reserve judgment–besides, is saying Marvel Studios is still looking, to make sure they make the right choice of Cap.

  15. DING DING DING DING!!!!! We have a winner here. McPartlin has the physique and the attitude to pull off the personification of the American Hero. I like Krasinski, but because he knows what his roles are. He's that lanky, funny guy that everyone likes, like he portrays in “The Office” and “License to Wed”. Haven't seen him in the one movie with Mya Rudolph or as the old time football player (but heard that wasn't good anyways, even with Clooney). But there's nothing I've seen from him that makes me think he can pull this off. As for the Ledger comparison, I remember thinking it was an INTERESTING direction to go in, but he had shown range in his career as well (from the brooding outsider in “10 Things”, to the heroic noble wannabe in “A Knights Tale” to the homosexual cowboy in “Brokeback”. Krasinski hasn't shown a lot of range yet.

  16. That picture probably does not display his most commanding pose, but I think you guys will be surprised, John's gonna shut your mouths, just wait.

  17. This guy is ALL kinds of wrong for this part.

  18. Oh good god they have to be kidding. Don't compare this to Tobey spiderman or Heath as the Joker at all. Tobey Maquire; short and he put on some muscle for the part just like peter parker. Heath Ledger; skinny, crazy hair, wiry, just like the Joker. John Krasinski; Tall, skinny, lanky, awkward. Captain America; built like a WWE wrestler or Gerard Butler from 300. This has nothing to do with acting talent the fact of the matter is Kasinski does not physically resemble Captain America in any way shape or form. He would have to go through the 300 boot camp times 100 to get there and even if he were able to put on 50 pounds of muscle he still looks nothing like the character. I guess they could make him up like they did for juggernaut in Xmen 3 or CGI him like Golem in LOTR. I think he is great in the office and an incredible actor, but come on really, I can't believe anyone is actually considering this. And never ever can you just “trust” a studio and the people working there they get it wrong all the time, then you end up with super hero movies like the first Hulk, Catwoman, Batman and Robin.

    …He could be Bucky.

  19. I'd have to see how he is in the role before I can judge. If recent examples have taught us anything i.e. Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes, Daniel Craig as James Bond , and Heath Ledger as the Joker, it's best to see the finished product instead of getting out the pitchforks before it's even in the can.

    Nuff Said….

  21. Thank Goodness

  22. joe johnston directed the rocketeer. so lets stop saying hes the wrong director. the casting is in marvel hands.
if you think about it Robert Downey Jr. is the face of Iron Man and now the character is modeling itself after his movie look and appearance. So my question is, is this guy the face you think of when you think of Steve Rogers ? (that poster above is what keeps flashing through my mind). Im not bothering to remember his name, but is he the guy that artists in the future will draw as the American icon we know as Captain America? I think not, but noone in this list of candidates even closely resembles my idol.

  23. I'm glad if he gets the role, but will it mean he'll have to leave “The office” for long?

  24. I really do not see him as Cap'. If this comes to be I think im gonna be very dissapointed. He s just not captain america material looks nothing like him…

  25. lol… Still for CA: He was their FIRST choice.

  26. I'm so sick of people playing the Heath Ledger card whenever an actor is rumored to play a part he is just NOT right for. It's an insult to Ledger and what he was able to do. Not everyone has that much talent, and Krasinski sure as heck doesn't.

And even if Krasinski could pull it off, and that's a big, BIG IF, he still doesn't look the part. Cap needs a rugged, handsome look, and no matter how good a job Krasinski does, he will still look ridiculously out of place.

  27. whats next Verne Troyer (mini me) as black panther

  28. Oh no, what a dork.
