Captain America Cast In Just A Few Weeks?

captain america casting soon Captain America Cast In Just A Few Weeks?

In all of our coverage of Marvel Studios and the development of their upcoming slate of films, there’s been one sticking question commonly found surfacing in our discussions; When the heck will we start hearing some solid info on who would be playing Steve Rogers, the patriotic hero Captain America, in the self-titled solo film coming next summer.

While we still don’t know who the finalists are for the career-defining role, we do have word via Sci Fi Wire that the announcement is coming sooner rather than later. Actually, we’ll likely be finding out in just a few weeks!

My thoughts in recent times were slightly worrisome about the lack of movement on this project, especially when compared to Thor which debuts the same summer (albeit, 2 months earlier). Director Kenneth Branagh not only found his Asgardian star months ago, but filled out the rest of its cast and began filming last month.

According to director of The First Avenger: Captain America Joe Johnston:

“We need to cast it soon… We have a very short list, but we’re still juggling actors here. I’d say within the next couple of weeks we’ll have ourselves a Captain America, I hope.”

Fan desires, rumors and speculation throw out names such as Mark Valley, Neal McDonough, Aaron Eckhart to John Barrowman although there’s nothing concrete on any of these.

Johnston continues to say they’re still aiming to shoot in June in the UK and are heavy into pre-production. A few days back we touched on this topic with snippets from another Joe Johnston interview where he spoke with Film Journal about what style we may expect from the Captain America film. This generated some mixed or slightly concerned reaction as to what creative leaps he may take in adapting Captain America to the big screen.

In the Sci Fi Wire discussion, he shares some more words which partly follow-up on his ideas that Cap fans can dissect in regards to the story:

“It’s the kind of thing where, while I’m not necessarily a comic-book fan, I think the interesting thing about this guy is that he’s a superhero without any superpowers, basically… He is the epitome of human perfection. He can’t fly and throw tanks around and see through walls and things like that, but he’s strong and runs fast.”

“And the interesting thing about this guy is that he starts out as a 98-pound weakling and he becomes this Adonis. How does that affect his arc in the story? How does that affect where he goes and what happens to him and everything?”

I’m pretty good at figuring out what’s what behind-the-scenes with comic book movies but I am constantly back-and-forth on what direction Joe Johnston and Marvel will go with for their selection of the title character. Will it be someone we don’t know like they did with Thor, supporting him with a superstar ensemble cast, or will they go for a bankable star who can sell the film on his own? I don’t know why, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they went with someone big like them old Leo Dicaprio rumors. Maybe it’s because my girlfriend would die at the thought…

We only know that Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada said months ago that they have a “wishlist” of actors and if that’s the case, I think big names.

Not much time left to play the guessing game so who do you think may play Captain America? Established star or relative unknown?

Don’t forget to join our discussion on what may be the look of Captain America’s movie costume.

Iron Man 2 opens May 7, 2010, Thor opens May 5, 2011 , The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.

  1. Steven Colbert as Steve Rogers!

  2. I really really really hope they go with an unknown, I don't know of any big stars out there that feel right for the role and all the people you mentioned are in their 40's(I think). Isn't Captain America a young man, late 20's or so?

  3. established star!

  4. i dont know why they say the patriotic hero captain america yes his name is captain america but have you ever read civil war? he may be a super hero named captain america but he rebels against his country when they started making heros register to be super police he strts the rebellion because the country was doing somthing that was wrong he stands for freedom and rights for others so dont expect som patriotic kiss ass scenes where hes in front of the flag and all that nonsense

  5. Yeah I read that too. Actually it goes back a few issues when he became Nomad (this was after the government took away his uniform and shield). He fought for the people instead of the government from then on.

If the avengers becomes a hit, and if marvel got back the rights to all the other characters, I would love for them to do a civil war movie. But alas I don't think it would happen

  6. Reading this makes me think that what we'll see is a personal journey that's initially barred because of the persons limitations. That all changes when he becomes something more than he was before. That unbarring will not just be liberating but guiding the character on the journey outward. Pointing the way to his mission in life. I think he'll be someone we'll recognize and feel confident about. The question in my mind begging for an answer is, will we see the transformation right before our eyes? Can they do that effectively? Is their still a magician in the house of mouse?

  7. Agreed, that could be a lot of fun. There's a lot of character development and dynamics that would go into such a film, so that would be really cool to see on screen. Gotta love Cap.

  8. How about the lead actor from Burn Notice? I can't think of his name off the top of my head but he could definitely play the role. He would just need to bulk up.

  9. Jeffrey Donovan i think

  10. OMG that is the greatest casting ever. I can imagine him wearing the awesome captain america suit with his black glasses over the top

  11. I wasn't the biggest fanboy of captain america until i read some of the Civil War graphic novels. There was one part when shield first turned against him and he leaps off one of those flying aircraft carriers onto a jet, digging his shield into the glass over the cockpit.
    Epic badass.

  12. Perhaps you missed the other 60 years of his stories, lol.

    ps. I'm Canadian

  13. he does already have the shield so…

  14. NO LEO DICAPRIO!! I am really looking forward to this movie, but if Leo is cast I will not be seeing it.

  15. It would not be able to happen i dont think. The cost of the movie would be really great. But I agree it would be really good.

  16. Colin Ferguson is still the best choice out there.

  17. For a lesser well know actor

  18. Good Day All!
I'm still hoping for Mark Valley. When we all hear the name finally, some of us will probably groan or jump for joy! Just wait…. either way….

With the costume that is such a HUGE Icon, the man chosen must truly 'be' Captain America and show the strength the character has as well as the conviction.

It might be the 'right' actor, it might not be….

We will all know for sure when the costume is on, the shield held and the eyes look right in the camera….

then… we will all know… if we truly have a living and breathing 'Captain America'.

Let me know what you think!

All the best! (And see you soon!)

    ~ Stark

  19. Why do you say the one cast as Thor is an unknown? Captain Kirk from the new Star Trek, right?? He isn't really unknown, just not an A list star… I don't remember his name though haha so maybe he is unknown.

As for Cap… Aaron Eckhart might be cool, but… I don't know. I like him as Harvey Dent and don't want him to go over to the Marvel side personally. I think they need to get someone who used to be really popular and then dropped off the face of the earth, such as Robert Downey Jr.!
Nobody talked about RDJ anymore until after Iron Man, and now look at him! Same with Mickey Rourke. They need to take someone we forgot about and push him back into the spotlight.

  20. Hate to say it but that would be Brad Pitt. Many people are against it but ya gotta think the chemistry with Ed Norton,RDJ and Samuel Jackson. Who else could handle screen time with these guys and not get out performed. The “he's too old now, excuse can't be used anymore cuz he can easily made to look much younger” sans Benjamin Button. I'm all for an unknown but i'm skeptical on any unknown being able to be on par with RDJ's acting ability and writing is not everything, a good actor can make even the worst writing sound great and great writing can lose it's potential cuz of sub-par acting.

  21. MARK VALLEY FOR CAP

  22. There are a lot of reasons why people might disagree with my choices, but I would love to see Alex Skarsgard or Sam Worthington as Cap. I know, I know.
I'd love to hear other suggestions too. Anyone?

  23. why not gabriel macht? from the spirit seems descent enough.

  24. To Play Captian America Maybe I sould Come Outta Retirement .
    Steve.

  25. I actually looked him up and watched some things he'd done, and I think he would be great as Cap. If only they'd go the RDJ way on this one and not the “youngish” way they seem to be going.

  27. I think should take a look at Marc Blucas. He has the look for Captain America
