Captain America in 3D?
May 10, 2010 by Rob KeyesMarvel Studios wasn’t able to convert Iron Man 2 in 3D but they may try with Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America.

3D annoys me. It was partially cool for some movies for a little while as the occasional treat. But now it’s all over the place and for the wrong reasons. The majority of “3D” movies coming out aren’t there to deliver some special experience, it’s to unfairly charge extra on an already over-priced ticket. That’s it.
The problem really hits home with the advent of post-conversion 3D, where a film not shot or meant to be in 3D gets a fake 3D tacked on. We saw this with the underwhelming Clash of the Titans and believe it or not, it almost happened with Iron Man 2.
While Marvel Studios didn’t have the time to make it happen with the Iron Man sequel, there are two candidates for 3D coming out next summer in Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America.
In the case of Iron Man 2, Jon Favreau made it clear that he won’t convert Iron Man 2 in 3D, that it would need to be filmed that way for it to work. Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige spoke on the matter of how they were investigating the possibility of converting Iron Man 2 after seeing the (financial) success of Avatar and Alice in Wonderland.
“We couldn’t have turned over a version of the movie 10 or 20 weeks earlier for 3-D conversion without undermining the quality… We used all the time we had for mixing and editing and discovering the right tone.”
From this we can expect them to be looking at the same options for Marvel Studios’ upcoming tentpole films next summer. Since Thor is deep into production and wasn’t shot in 3D, it would need the crappy post conversion (hopefully that doesn’t happen). Captain America on the other hand, begins shooting next month so they could shoot it in 3D from the get-go.
“The team has been doing a lot of research into 3-D processes, and we’re looking at it on future films when we have the time… We will be doing it at some point.”
Don’t be surprised to hear that The First Avenger: Captain America, The Avengers or Iron Man 3 will be coming in 3D. There’s money to be made.
I’m only interested if it’s shot in 3D. If not, I won’t watch it that way.
What do you think about seeing some of Marvel’s upcoming feature films in 3D?
If you’re interested, join our discussion on what we can expect from Iron Man 3.
Thor opens May 5, 2011, The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.

What the heck is with all the 3D stuff? Give me a break! Maybe for one or two movies, but this is going overboard. If Captain America is in 3D then I’m NOT seeing the movie.
I’m so sick of this 3-D crap. The only movie I’ve ever seen in 3-D is Avatar and I will see the two sequels in 3-D (only the first time I see them, any times after I won’t). And other than those the only time I ever plan on seeing a 3-D movie is Zombieland 2 cause I think they’ll do some really funny things with it.
They are talking about way too many movies in 3d. Its not necessary. I actually had a friend who wouldnt see iron man 2 with cus it wasnt 3d. I told him he was being rediculous cus its not necessary at all. But he insisted. I dont get it, not at all.
Everyone has invested in this technology and now they’re trying to use every movie to make it pay. Fortunately we still have a choice as many Cineplexes will run these films in 2-D as well. From a philosophical point of view I see no reason to film in 3-D unless your willing to design the movie around the process. That means you would lose something watching the movie in 2-D. Since most blockbusters won’t be done that way you can count on it as less than the best 3-D experience. So now why pay extra? Until Cameron’s system is in more wide spread use it looks like the 3-D will be around only to entice the young and gullible…
If you want to see all films in 3D and just can’t get enough 3D make sure to see this film opening weekend and show your support!
If Captain America in 3D is a success, you’ll never see another 2D theatrical Captian America movie again.
Pay it forward!
You think 3D is a gimmick? lol, its about to be all you got.
Just keep supporting these 3D films.
if people hate 3D cant they just watch it in 2D then? my cinema doesnt have 3D so i’ve never watched it. never seen a movie wtih those 3D glasses on so i wouldnt know if its good or bad. but i guess i’ll be seeing most of these movies in regular 2D.. i dont mind that:)
Very good point, but then people will need something new to whine about.
“if people hate 3D cant they just watch it in 2D then?”
Sure Magnus it’s an option most places but how long will that last? Talk to your local theater manager see if they know if the owner has a time table for such an upgrade. You might be surprised on how soon they intend to have the capability to exhibit 3-D. For smaller theaters with a single or duel screens it could come down to a choice if they eventually convert, whether to show 3-D or 2-D. Naturally if they went to the trouble to upgrade they will want that extra income anytime they have the opportunity to get it…
Gah…please no…
I cant wait for them to start releasing the classics like Citizen Kane or Godfather in 3D. Because crappy effects make the acting, storyline, and direction so much better.
And Jaws while we are at it!
That upcoming Predators movie!!
Awesum! Way KeWl!
There is going to be so much going on in “Thor” and “Captain America” as it is, why burdon the moviegoer with more to look out for? These movies are going to have clues and shout-outs to other films as it is, so unless those easter eggs are the 3D coming out of the screen saying ‘Hello! I’m here!’ then I don’t want to see it.
It’s too late to covert Thor. But after giving it a few moments of thought, I would have to say NO to a 3D Cap as well.
How many times will The First Avenger throw his shield at you? Yes, it will come back to him, but I have to ask for an estimated guess.
I fully agree with most on here, the 3D thing is getting WAAAYYY over used now. There really needs to be a reason for it to be done (like going to a whole new planet in Avatar) and it really should be done from the start. The conversion process is just an excuse for studios to make more money and I hope most moviegoers understand that and speak with their wallets when a movie isn’t done in proper 3D. I don’t see the point of Captain America being done in 3D, but I think it could be cool for something like Ant Man. To have it just so you feel like a bullet or laser blast (from Iron Man)is whizzing past you in the theater is completely unnecessary.
The video for Corey Hart’s “I Wear My Sunglasses at Night” should be played as the official announcement to don your head gear.
THAT’S what I think of 3D.
See my post from that time when I wrote it about the thing and the guy with the stuff. It’s fabulous.
Heh heh heh, if they actually played that song to inaugurate the 3D mode then I’d probably see more 3D movies just for that.
Corey Hart aside, I don’t see what the fuss is about. We should be more glad that Marvel isn’t forcing conversion on films rather than considering how to do 3D. Let’s be honest. These are comic book films. They’re ripe for the 3D treatment, and, if done well, they’d be spectacular. We already know Marvel has been pretty professional so far in how they’ve done their films, and I think we can expect the same from this.
I have no hidden love for 3D, but I don’t get the impression Marvel is just going to splash “3D!” on the screen just to do it. For the summer blockbusters 3D is going to be “the thing” whether we want it or not. I’d at least want Marvel to have the corner market for quality 3D.
I believe that every film should be shot in 3D. That way we can choose to watch it in 3D, or to watch it in 2D. So everyone’s happy, right?
I don’t think we should limit our options by shooting in 2D. In twenty years’ time, 3D might be standard and accepted, and we’ll look back on 2D films the way we look back of black-and-white films now.
Take THAT “Ed Wood” and “Schindler’s List”!
I DON’T THINK SOOOOOOO…..3D is a novelty and should only be used in kid movie’s and some action flicks, people will get tired of it,and some are tired of it NOW!!!!!!!!!
No 3D please!!!!!
Like it or not, 3D is the future. Just like theaters had to go to color films and wide-screens during the 1950′s to compete with television, today’s theaters must go 3D and IMAX to compete with HDTV, Blu-Rays and 7.1 surround sound.
A 3D-shot movie only work well to a filmmaker’s creative visions. It works pretty well for James Cameron to make the world of Pandora visually appealing and “alive” in “Avatar” but it just won’t do well with slam-bam action flicks or rom-com movies.
I would watch Captain America and Thor in the traditional 2D format. If it is shot in 3D, FORGET IT!
Eventually they will perfect that lenticular approach to seeing a stereoscopic film without any viewing aid. Or, maybe using some other system not even developed yet, such as a holographic system. The point is that most people have binocular vision and should be willing to accept seeing motion pictures the way they see the rest of the world. I have read some comments that stated only certain movies should be in 3D. I take it that those people go through life evaluatiing what should be in 3D and what should not. If they see something they think should not be in 3D, they cover one eye while watching whatever it may be.
When a viable glasses free system is fully developed and greedy movie moguls stop charging extra for the 3D experience, 2D movies will go the way of silent pictures. Our decendents will marvel at how tolerent we were to watch flat pictures and be able to enjoy the experience. Of course, with the full development of holographic projection you will not only be able to see something in 3D, you will be able to walk around the object you are viewing. When display systems reach that point, won’t all this bickering about 3D glassees seem silly indeed?
When sound was first introduced to film, many directors didn’t like it or didn’t know how to use it properly because they were used to working in silent film and thought it would just be a gimmick. The same went for color film. Eventually directors learned how to use the new technology properly and today except in extremely rare cases (Schindler’s List, Raging Bull, Young Frankenstein) it would be unthinkable to make a film in black and white. The same goes for 3D: eventually film directors will learn how to properly use this creative tool for more than just as a gimmick and it will become unthinkable to make a 2D movie. Old 2D movies won’t be converted into 3D for the same reason B&W movies aren’t colorized or silent film aren’t given speaking audios.
Aaron, I’ve heard that opinion before and I disagree with it.
I probably wouldn’t have a negative position on 3D, if they didn’t use it as a subliminal delivery system.
And that is the main reason they’re switching to 3D.
well, 3D seems like the future to me.
Okay, first, I love 3D. I think it’s a fantastic way of expanding on the world of cinema by allowing a viewer to more or less fall into the action first hand.
But there’s a catch. I refuse to watch crummy 3D films that were converted last minute. Burton at least considered 3D for a while first. Thor? Maybe. Captain America? Only if they do it RIGHT. Otherwise, I’ll take 2D just the same.
I agree that absolutely that movies not shot in 3-D are no better when converted to the format. However, A movie actually made with 3-D cameras, like Avatar, can be far more visually stunning. of course, money is always involved but to think so negatively as to imply that is the only factor is frankly sad. There would be no extra money to be made if WE THE PEOPLE didn’t want it. Too bad you, the author, do not. You need to be a bit more
forward-thinking. Clearly, the new 3-D tech is the wave of the future and for good reasons other than just money. Now, go watch an Indie flick about a country singer who kills himself and be happy
Next it will probably be 4D, were smell-ovision will be added. If it’s a rainy scene in a movie vapors will pour out of a hidden system making a rainy smell in the theater and stuff like that then they’ll do like Disney and MGM, and Universal theme parks and have seats shake and stuff during explosions or earthquakes for example. How much will the tickets be? About $20.00 a pop.
Mike Todd tried the Smell-O-Vision thing already in the fifties and it failed miserably. You might say it stunk.
Good point, who’s to say they won’t try it again. Either way I’d be against it anyhow.
Off the subject a little but I just figured out how they can explain how Namor is able to fly. The fins on his feet could emit an electro-magnetic pulse sort of like bees, humming birds and fireflies. The fins are connected to the neurology of his brain and assist him to fly up to 60 miles per hour through an elctro-magnet pulse and also help swim at fantastic speeds. The elctro-magnetic pulse could also be used aggressively like an eel to electrify an opponent.
Allow me to translate that first quote from Feige:
“How the @#$% could we worry about 3D – we had to spend our time piecing together an actual movie out of this mess!”
Read between the lines… And what, I would’ve paid for what: 100 minutes of RDJ acting like an douche in 3D, and 20 of Iron Man / War Machine doing something semi-cool?
NO THANKS.
